You’ve convinced me. I hope we trade Dame to the Lakers.

You're going to get even madder Grumpy. It gets worse, two years from now Duncan still has one year left, but wait it is only half guarantied. So the reason the Heat didnt get Beal now is because in 2 years time they might need to move a pick or asset to move an expiring contract that is only half guarantied. Thats not even mentioning the cap jump thanks with the new tv deal.

No its not in 2 years, Miami is over the first tax apron, and will enter the 2nd apron next year which puts them in a dilema. It means Miami would have to find someone by the this years trade deadline that has Duncan dollar match and trade him for an expiring deal. If they resign either Max or Vincent without shedding salary they are over the 2nd Apron this year. The strategy was to forgo Duncans 19M over three years, for Beal's 46M over 3 years, which gets you a 20M savings, over that time putting you below the 2nd Apron. Miami is in tax hell at the moment. I think the only way they decide to hit this if at all is with Lillard deal. They will push to get Duncan, Herro,Lowry, Oladipo in there somehow to shed some weight for sure.

Basically with the 2nd apron complicating matters, if we would have traded Lowry/oladipo and a 1st for Beal that would have been our big move and we would be locked in with that team for the foreseeable future without a way to improve beyond minimum deals and bad draft picks…def not worth it for Beal but yes for dame

Phx did it because they saw a chance to buy low and had no real other way of improving their team but I think that they sold their soul for a team that won’t win a championship at all but that’s on them

Overall I applaud the heat for showing patience and not being short sighted for Beal. Only worth it if we don’t become a 2nd apron team (getting out of Robinson money) and not draining our assets

Assuming they don't make a trade and Lowry and Oladipo come off the books, how will they enter the 2nd apron? I have to sit down and read the new CBA rules because I am mega confused.

Damn how Ira described it is spot on.... Draconian AF, Bro!
With +30 yr old major players on max contracts, just 1 injury pretty much adds insult with salt on the wound.

If Lowry and Oladipo come off the books and we don't make a trade, and only resign 1 of Vincent or Struss then were ok. That means we run it back without one of Struss or Vincent, and take on no additional salary. This will reset the tax apron clock, and were given another 2 years to get back into tax hell.

Why? We would still be left with Herro and Duncan + basically all of our picks minus one from the Beal trade. Now maybe if Herro value around the league is trash so I could sorta understand. I dont think that is the case but I could be wrong. The simple question is what would Herro + Duncan + all the picks and swaps get us.

I dont think that is the case but I could be wrong. The simple question is what would Herro + Duncan + all the picks and swaps get us.

In this case, if we were to A. have won the trade. Miami would have needed to trade Herro and Duncan + Picks for a one year expiring contract and some slight depth.

the way to look at this is this way:

Miami has two positive tax reducing salaries if they are kept on the team (Oladipo & Lowry) means money that comes off the book reducing our tax implication. If you trade them both for equal salary then next year that salary does not come off the books, so they need to really careful how they trade these contracts and which ones they keep. If Miami keeps them then they get salary relief once they contracts expire and they become free agents.

Miami has two negative tax adding salaries if they are kept on the team ( Herro & Duncan ) means money that is tied for duration of the next 3 years for Duncan and 4 years for Herro. If you trade them both for equal salary then next year that salary does not come off the books. Miami would need to trade for contracts on 1 year deals in this case so they can receive savings next year and avoid the 2nd tax apron.

Miami has to trade them in combination in a specific combination ( Herro with Oladipo ) or ( Herro with Lowry) or (Duncan with Oladipo) or (Duncan with Lowry) or even (Herro with Duncan).

The exemption of trading (Lowry & Oladipo) is if you get back a contract that is also a one year rental that expires just like them.
