Memories are short. Phoenix, who Beal asked to be traded too, just had Sarver. Produce a winner and players will want to go there. Everything else is marginal.

Secondly, if the rebuild lasts longer than 2 seasons, there is a problem. I'm not expecting Wiz to go from bottom rung to contender in 2 years, but I am expecting an OKC situation where it's two down years and then you can clearly see the arrow pointing up.

#1, I've always known it would mean pain (if you're writing to me anyway), I'm fully aware of that. How wouldn't we know that? Most of us are Redskins and Nats and Caps fans too (or at least fans of some of those teams). I'm just skeptical that a lot of people realize how long this will take, like for instance your post.

You say if it takes longer than 2 seasons its a problem.

Why wouldn't it?

If we trade Porzingis, what do we have of value here? Kispert, and other role players? Pretty much.

We don't even have the first of a big 3, and all available evidence suggests the next two drafts lack transformative players, that the drafts are more similar to 2020, and some of those disappointing classes from 2013-2017 but probably even worse than those (many of which had at least a couple of players with glowing profiles).

How do you turn around this team with classes kind of like what we drafted 2019-2023: the whole Rui/Deni/Kispert/Davis type of profiles because that's kind of what the review sounds like. Kispert/Davis/Deni type guys going top 10 instead of the teens (and 8 if I remember right with Deni).

I don't know. It looks bad to me. I don't expect to see any sunlight with the rebuild until at least '26 or '27, this is gonna be long, which I'm fine with, so long as they do the rest of it right unlike the last five years of mistakes.

Not directed at you, just on Twitter/Reddit etc, it's so easy to sit here and say burn it to the ground without actually knowing what that entails.

Regarding your second point, I look at OKC as the model, they had 10 straight years of 45+ wins, realized that they had to blow it up. Yes, it took lotto luck with the lottery, but they got Jalen at 12, Jaylin at 34, Giddey at 6, Tre Mann at 18. It's about drafting, development and making the right trades and picking up assets along the way. I said 2 years b/c the East is top heavy and as I said yesterday, there will be a lot of teams next offseason looking to shed salary. Wizards as of now have approximately $100 million in cap room assuming the projected cap is $140 million. Draft picks this year and next will affect that, so would a Deni extension but not to the point where we can't make moves. That's where they're going to come in, take on a contract, get a pick or two in exchange and just go from there.

I just don't see how we can follow their model. We got nothing of value for Beal or Wall because of the salary dumps those players became. We don't have valuable assets to start spinning a golden loom of draft picks and young prospects with because of that. Other than Porzingis and I guess Kispert/Deni to a lesser extent, we have nothing anyone wants that could really be spun into much. OKC could pull this build off because they did have assets other teams wanted and they operated in a stupider NBA environment.

But yes if we could somehow follow their model anyway? 1000% that should be whats done. I just don't think we can, other than a much discounted version of it.

Anyone know when the deal becomes official? Curious about the pick swaps. Do we have to wait until July?

I think we are attempting to add a third team to take Paul.

What Heat’s Pat Riley is saying at state-of-the-franchise media briefing. We'll update every couple minutes, so please keep checking back. Riley said Bam and Herro are "stars" and loves this young core:

Who on the Wiz have Rileys BBIQ and acumen to diss on the 23 y o Herro who the Heat were not going to trade to the Wiz for Beal . Herro fit the bill of what the Wiz are needing ,a young tall PG who can create his own points and drill the 3 ball and already has 2 20ppg seasons. Crying about defense in a offense league is becoming a voice less heard .Spoelstra has shown zone defenses can stifle everyone but Denvers offense.

Several fellow NBA owners have said 'I we wish we had a relationship like you have with your players.'

Herro is not a PG.

Interesting. Interview with CP3
Hmmmmm. Is he getting bought out for the original 15m?
Ie. Suns increase the guarantee to 25M for accounting purposes… But he agrees to take a buyout for the original 15 AM and save us money.

Windhorst: “you are probably getting an extra 15 M out of this… Does that affect you at all?”
CP3: “I won’t say too much, because I know more than what gets divulged… but it’s not always what you think it is”

Just listened to Zach Lowe's podcast (around 46:45 in), and he indicated that the Wizards could be all 2nd rounders and getting almost or all available 1st round pick swaps. If they can get the 2030 1st round pick swap, that could be pretty juicy.

Edit: Seems like it's not possible to get the 2030 pick due to when the transaction is taking place, not sure if that's true.

joshuacf wrote:
I think this could have been condensed into about a paragraph.

You understand that no high-profile players are going to want to play for you if you just trade them immediately after failing to win a Stanley Cup or NBA title, right?

This isn't NBA 2K. Players have emotions, and they are going to react accordingly if they see a legendary player get treated badly by an organization.

You don't treat legendary players like playing cards and trade them immediately after you think "the window" is over. It's terrible business. Everybody knows this.

#1 I think I was pretty clear that I understood why the Loria method was unacceptable which is why I was fine with a title defense. What I wasn't fine with was 5 years of diminishing returns in regards to performance, and roster value. Of course this is NHL talk so I'll move over to the NBA.

#2: That's irrelevant. 100% irrelevant. Nobody wants to play for the Wizards to begin with. The franchise is an absolute joke outside of Washington DC, and a joke in the worst way. It's not that they make fun of the Wizards (until this horrendous trade anyway) its that the rest of the league doesn't even think about the franchise AT ALL. Nobody, not the players in the league, not opposing fans, not the media. Nobody. The Wizards/Bullets have been utterly irrelevant for decades. No player worth hunting in FA has any interest to begin with in Washington. None. So whatever ruthlessness we might show or not to a player is completely irrelevant.

#3 Even if they were interested, which they aren't, the fact that we might trade away an asset a year too early, rather than a year too late wouldn't impact anyone in the slightest. The interest of players is primarily about the bag and about titles, followed by fun cities to play in and cities with no state income tax. We can't provide players with any of those things save the bag. So again, what we do or don't do with Beals, Walls, or anyone else matters not at all. Players have short memories when it comes to playoff contention, getting paid and playing in cities w/teams they believe in. They'll go anywhere. If Isaiah Thomas gets broken and destroyed by Boston, no matter, FA's will still be interested because Boston is damn good and run well, they may have hosed Isaiah, but players will look past that if the money's right and the team is contending.

#4 As I said before, I was fine on signing on for a run at a repeat in '18-'19 even if I knew (and I did) there was no chance of it happening, however after that it was time for the Caps to figure out how to rebuild. The cupboard was bare of prospects, the vets were all in their thirties not getting better, just slowly aging out (though Ovy was doing a fantastic job of retaining his value, Backstrom was not, Carlson being significantly younger would carry more value). The team had to figure out what it would do at the deadlines circa '20-'22. They decided to play it out, and as a result, we can't pull nearly as much as we could have years ago.

Again, if you're fine with that, that's okay, but the argument that "everyone knows" you should just play out a dynasty to its denouement, rather than make the best available trades possible to start a rebuild is just crazy? I don't even know where to start with that. I would get if you wouldn't move these guys during their title defense, and even during covid etc the year after that, but the past three years, holding on, refusing to stare facts in the face with first round exit after first round exit for three years in a row before the collapse began in earnest in '21-'22 though they did manage another heroic trip to the playoffs that year? If everyone should know something its that if you're not contending and can't contend for titles, you should start your rebuild, not stubbornly play it out with your vets until all value they've accrued during their careers has evaporated. That's insanity.

Yea I wonder how long these pick swaps go. If it's 2030, then the Wizards might have come away with a steal of a trade.

ehhh...sorta. We could easily break out the Todd or Goodwin trade to occur separately after 7/1 to get the swap.
So Beal + Goodwin for CP3 and picks... then Todd for 2030 pick swap on/after 7/1/23

I know it runs counter to full tank mode and therefore isn’t a great idea, but it would be fun to watch Paul playing with our two bigs (not at the same time, though).

Pick and pop with Zinger and pick and roll with Gafford would be entertaining.

We could roll out some lineups that could score (though not defend).

This is kinda overstated and totally ignores the MAJOR changes that have taken place with the Zards over the past 2-3 weeks. All that you state above may have been true in the past...but the key word here is "past."

I'm certain this new crew of Winger, Dawkins & Co. bring with them a credibility, reputation and connections that makes what happens in the past pretty much irrelevant. It's a new day in Wizdom, bro.
