Re: Jock Landale news, discussion and highlights
You can keep him but would still be better off as a 3rd center than primary backup.
Trying out this Substack thing. Suns and NBA thoughts. Check it out: https://hoopsnexus.substack.com/

What is a reasonable offer? Would you match $24M/3 years?

Feel like Mavs will go for him like they did McGee.
$10-12m over 3 seems right. Knows his role, room to improve, KD loves him

Well I think because Jock is an early-bird RFA, the Suns are limited in their offer to him. Best they could pay him would be $10.15M this upcoming season with decent raises for each year after. That's likely getting excessive. However, if another team offers him more, well, I believe the Suns could match it even though it is over the $10.15M they can offer him because he is a RFA.
So is he worth $8M per year? Probably. He's the type of center the Suns need. Smart, rebounds well, blocks more shots than DA, plays better defense than DA, and unfraid to take a three pointer. Suns paid $5.5M for Aron Baynes four seasons ago. Inflation tells me $8M for Jock now is probably okay and look better as the cap goes up.
Also, a signing on the $24M/3 year scale gives the Suns trade opportunities as opposed to a bunch of vet minimums. It's why keeping Payne on the roster and bringing back Craig is important. Those three players could be combined in a trade if necessary to net a valuable missing piece if things are not working out.

That is a wild overpay for a 3rd string center who will be 28 next season.
Jock is good but he's a energy and hustle kind of player who is undersized and got abused on defense numerous times during the regular season. His speed worked for him versus Jokic but paying 8m per year seems like such a wild overpay for a third or second string center.

I'm a big Jock guy and that's absolutely an overpay. I mean outside of energy and hustle, he's not exactly a skilled player worthy of TPMLE money. His QO is like just over $2m, we got him for literal cash considerations and there's no way he did enough to earn himself $8m a year. If someone offers him that money (like Dallas did with McGee lol) then you say thank you for your contribution, go get your bag son

I understand what you are saying but that would be a serious overpay IMO.
He is OK as a backup but Baynes was probably the best backup C in the entire NBA for a couple seasons. Landale hasn't shown that he can be that good and he isn’t a prospect or anything like that. At times we couldn't play him over Biyombo because his defense was meh and offensively isn't good enough.
Regarding salaries to have available in future trades I would prefer to give a bigger contract to Craig. He got $5M last year and he deserves at least that money per year in his new contract.
I can get behind of $16M/2 years for Craig and we would have that contract in the bucket for a future trade if needed.

I like Jock, but he has a better chance of winning bronze at the women's gymnastics this summer than of landing a 10mil+ a year contract.

I wasn't advocating $10M for Jock. Just saying that was the max offer that could be made by the Suns. But yes I would match a three year $24M offer. That will be a cheap, tradeable contract over the next three seasons. You have to consider the average pay for a player last year was $9M, he would be under that.

For sure Craig is a player that needs to come back. But I would not let Landale slip away if a team offered him that contract. He showed what type of player he could be in the playoff games against Denver at home where he was instrumental in the two wins. He was good both offensively and defensively. I would rather see Landale over Ayton any day of the week. My hope is DA gets turned into two more quality players plus some future picks. Some GM will be stupid enough to do that and then regret it a few years later.

I expect Ayton back so I wouldn't spend so much money on a mediocre backup C.
The Suns are not finding proper value for Deandre Ayton and are leaning towards keeping him next season, per @Gambo987 (podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/bur…):
“I think there’s a really good chance Deandre Ayton ends up staying with the Phoenix Suns.”
Landale is OK and I want him back but he doesn't deserve that money... there are too many Cs similar to him that are getting minimum deals.

Yeah, $8 million a year is ludicrous. I'd probably give him like $7 million over 2 with a team option for a 3rd or something.

Goes to show, you only need one team doing something wild and unconventional to really rock the boat
