LOL Washington traded their 2 best players for 0 first round picks. They managed to get a good backup pg and some seconds..
Oh and their third best player is about to leave for nothing.
Fantastic asset management

interesting trade with potential positives for all three teams.
Wizards get a solid player in Jones and maybe a rotation piece in Gallo if he can get back to full speed. You'd think KP would have been worth at least a first rounder in there too, but he's also an inconsistent head case so maybe this was the best offer they could get.
Grizzlies get some much needed leadership and vet experience to mentor Morant and run the team while he's suspended (or permanently if they end up parting ways with Ja).
Celtics upgrade their big man rotation with a potential difference maker and open up minutes for their developing backcourt talent.
at the same time I gotta agree with others in this thread that it feels like Boston is taking on a ton of risk with this move, because from the outside looking in, they just lost a lot of defense and toughness from a roster that already seems kind of light on those qualities. And they added one of the more frustrating talents in the league with Porzingis' history of injuries and unreliability.
maybe there's something going on with Smart that we don't know about that made this an easier decision for Stevens, though.

Re: Woj/Shams Bomb: Porzingis traded to Celtics Part Deux! Grizzlies involved, Marcus Smart to Grizz - Tyus Jones to Wiz
The issue with this trade for Boston (as opposed to the Brogdon one which fell apart), is that they just shipped out their only leader in the locker room and hardest working player for a guy who's work ethic is questionable and is prone to missing a ton of games each year.
I guess it's not surprising given how Smart has butted heads with Brown in the past, and Brown seemingly has a way of getting guys he doesn't agree with shipped out, but it is a little head scratching as it doesn't increase the toughness level of the team or their level of compete on a night in and night out basis.
Smart was always the Celtics scapegoat but he largely hasn't been the one at fault for the Celtics consistent choking.
From an overall asset perspective the Celtics do look like they come out ahead though, and there is upside in that KP in theory allows them to bench the extremely overrated Rob Williams when he's unplayable come playoff time and reduce Horford to a bit role.

It's 100% his relationship with Brown. Smart is the one guy who would hold Brown accountable, and we've seen multiple times now that when you challenge Brown / get on his bad side he'll get you shipped out (Kyrie, Hayward, Smart).

This trade was an absolute gut punch and makes me want to cry but I think it was a great deal.
It's definitely a two fold type of deal. On the surface KP is clearly an upgrade and will stretch the floor playing with either of Boston's current bigs. But as a Raptor fan, I've always thought of Smart as your "engine" per say. His energy and effort on the defensive end is infectious. I'm intrigued by this deal because I think everyone won in some way minus Washington. Who clearly want to dismantle the roster, but not getting any real value from it. Extremely confusing from a fans perspective.

I don’t know why the wiz were scrambling to deal their two best players for nothing like they were JFK during the Cuban Missile Crisis

Re: Woj/Shams Bomb: Porzingis traded to Celtics Part Deux! Grizzlies involved, Marcus Smart to Grizz - Tyus Jones to Wiz
I get KP has his injury concerns, but his season in Washington was easily the best of his NBA career. He was an efficient all around scorer and terror defensively. The Celtics can use him everywhere on both ends of the floor and at the very least helps with some insurance with Horfords old age and Rob always missing games too.
Moving Smart is going to be a big culture shock. As good as the Jay's are, they just aren't vocal leaders that are capable of rallying the team. Tatum is a lead by example type of guy and JB has taken subliminal shots against everyone in Boston the entire year.
Honestly for Washington they get an incomplete grade. The two trades they have left them with Cp3, Tyus, Shamet, Gallo, Muscala and bunch of SRPs. I can't see a scenario where they ruin their tank and keep Paul and Tyus on the roster because those guys just don't play losing basketball.

Last off season a lot of yall were saying Brogdon was damaged goods and career was in jeopardy. People still haven't learned the variability and nuances of pro athletes, for 80% of the league you gotta play it year by year.

Trading Smart is not.... Smart. He was the heartbeat of that team (the real team leader) and their facilitator even though he wasn't a pure PG.
I'm guessing that the Celtics will be in the PG market now unless they want Brown (lol) being their point forward.
Porzingis is a great fit though. The Celtics offense is going to be lethal.

Boston will figure it out, although they're taking a risk on KP. His health and shaky fit with teams should have Boston a bit concerned.
Also congratulations Wizards fans, this is your first step out of purgatory. It'll be some years still, but this is the step every FO needs to take before they can be successful down the road.
This is KPs first real shot on a contender. Lets see what happens. Hes been on losers or teams that weren't ready his entire career. He's probably getting extended too so you'll see the core of Jaylen Jayson and KP for a couple years.
While Ja is out Smart gets to prove he can be a #1 which is what he wanted
KP was part of the reason why his teams were losers, though. He is not a #1 option and his unique skill set requires a specific setup to work.
Thankfully, he will only be the #3 option in Boston. I believe that he can work in that capacity. It will be the first time in his career that he won't be the #1 or #2 option so it may take some time until he properly adjusts but it can work, yeah.

I guess the question is Jones worth a 1st? He's been pretty solid as a starter when Ja has been out the past couple of years (14/7/3 on good shooting %). The issue is if he worth a 1st it's a late one and the teams that need a PG are all drafting too high. The only team that fits the bill is the Clippers who have the 30th pick. Maybe the Wiz hold onto him at the start of the season, let him put up stats and see how injuries play out around the league and then they can flip him? But then the problem is he is an expiring contract.
I applaud the Wiz for tearing it down to the studs but man the return has not been good. I understand being screwed with the Beal NTC but would have thought Porzingis could at least get them a pick.

Oh, they'll definitely try. But whether they will be able to do it is another matter entirely. Thankfully, they got those picks back so even if they don't manage to re-sign KP, it's still a good enough trade for them.

KP could have left for nothing. Beal could have kept them in the play-in bubble. The Wizards simply want a shot at a #1 pick. They couldn't do that with Beal.

Probably a case of selling a year too early rather than a year too late. Smart's style of play doesn't usually lend itself to long term sustainability. He plays so damn hard and he guards everyone, including centers. That can't be great for longevity. He slipped defensively last year and his offensive game was never that good. When he's no longer elite defensively his value will drop a fair amount.
