You can check the receipts.. I liked Black in this draft for the magic. The team needed more perimeter play making and perimeter defense. The Black /Suggs ball court is going to be fun to watch.

Welman was clear: upside.

In particular it was stated that Howard played injured and was actually a better player.

But I got lost in the defense of "let's draft the injured guy".

You mean Dick gets all the white -lite-racism stereotypes knocks: just shooter, not athletic, and Jett fits perfeclly into every white- stereotypes : unathletic, can't move feet, doesn't guard space, is bullied by bigger players, can't rebound, but is okey passer and good shooter - just happends to be black?

In reality Dick is way more versitale than people give him credit ,and Jett is way less versitale than now people are trying to project him to be. Jett is stand still-spot up shooter without any clear strenght beside shooting, plus he can't play anything but SF ( but will probably struggle there as well since he can't defend athletic SFs) and maybe some PFs , if you can work away fact he can't rebound to save his life nor is interested in doing so, rather has habbit of leaking in transition. Like i don't know, having Gobert or some Deandre Jordan next to him to grab 15 out of potential 18 rebounds.

Basically, we drafted Caleb Houstan 2. Idnetical set of problems, nothing new added to a team.

I had Dick at 6, so of course I agree with you!

In Weltman we trust ???

Someone made a twitter thread about how Magic fan "consensus" never get what they want:

2019 - NAW
2020 - Nesmith
2021 - Bouknight/Moody
2022 - Jabari
2023 - Dick

Really is a bias for specific "shooters" that have failed more than hit so far

Some positives about Black:
- High free throw rate
- Excellent BBIQ/Awareness
- Makes teammates better
- Positional size opens up many defensive schemes.

In the vote draft interview, Weltman was clear that he drafted skill over "upside". He views Black's skill as elite defense. In that it sounds like he will compete for minutes behind Suggs, and not Fultz.

I was super-bummed this time last year, did my "research", and then got really excited by the pick. I am sure that in 24 hours I will convince myself this was exactly the right choice (I'm not there yet though).

Howard Mass wrote:I did prefer others but I like this pick.

Welcome to Orlando Anthony Black.

This pick feels like the Magic plans to make some structural changes. I assume that starts with shipping Anthony. And that Suggs is currently the starter - with G-Harrris to be waived/traded.

I really can't see a Suggs/Black bench backcourt: in 2023/24. Maybe next year, but this year, can that possibly work?

I see Black might play multiple positions this year but after this year, mainly be a point guard as it will be hard for them to play Fultz and Black together much.

Other moves will be made.

While I really like Suggs, it's still debatable if he is the long-term shooting guard here. I feel this team needs a Devin Booker type there. Kobe Bufkin seemed to be this type of player.

It's possible the Magic will make more moves but they want to have a big team in terms of size and length to go up against.

They will need a guy they can go too at that position though. Will it be Suggs? It's a big year for him.

Crazy. I find out after the draft that I know someone who works in OTE. They speak really highly of the Thompson Twins and their work ethic. Wish I’d known about the inside track before the draft! Not that it would’ve mattered since they were both gone by 6.

Pretty underwhelming pair of picks, IMO.

On the other hand I thought the Franz pick was underwhelming at the time, which shows I know a grand total of nothing, so time to hope I'm wrong again!

Jett Black feel like Ying and Yang. Black is a defensive blur, Jett is an offensive blur. Black attacks the paint both on and off the ball, Jett attacks the perimeter on and off the ball. They feel like very complimentary pieces to put around Paolo and Franz. We did not risk bringing in an alpha to compete with Paolo.

Two things I am very happy about.
1. We aggressively addressed our backcourt. This is a very promising signal. It was tempting to "protect" our backcourt and draft frontcourt players. I think this would have been a severe mistake and I am glad WeHam avoided it.
2. We drafted for fit. This implies that we are building around our core of Franz/Paolo. Drafting to complement Franz/Paolo is the strategy I was hoping to see.

Wouldn't that person be kind of biased, though? In any case, how the twins fare early on will have a huge effect on the draft stock of any future prospect coming out of that league.

My opinion…

Jake Fischer hinted pre draft that Toronto had a deal worked out with Orlando to jump from 13 to 11.

My speculation is that they were going to leap ahead of OKC to draft Wallace.

OKC found out and beat them to the punch.

Totally. I also couldn’t say what their scouting knowledge would be like anyway.

Then the one time when we DID get our guy, Jalen Suggs turned into a toad.

Black is already a better PG than Cole. Cole has a tough time just making a simple pass. He has a better handle than Suggs, which is why he's been the PG so far.

What's so weird is that OKC drafts Cason to add to Dort, SGA and Giddey as guards, two of which can't shoot great (Dort/Giddey) and TBD on Wallace and they also somehow guard SFs/PFs and make these guard lineups work and Thunder fans are chill about it yet we're like "We need to trade THREE of our guards for anyone to play at all! It can never work!!"

We can have some funky lineups that may be better than people think

I think Giddey actually plays SF-PF.
