Adding two guards in the lottery feels like a move you make when you are about to blow up the backcourt. I just don't see how exactly they do it given the need to return value and balance competitiveness. How would you handle it?
Fultz, G Harris, for 2nd picks into CASH CONSIDERATIONS.

I think you have to move Fultz and keep Cole on a backup pg contract. Start Cole for the beginning of the season and let Black eventually take over.
Start Suggs hoping for better shooting production and bring Jett off the bench. Ditch Gary Harris because there aren’t enough minutes. Caleb Houstan is still on the roster.

What I would do and what the Magic are going to do are vastly different
I would unload Fultz right now and give Black the keys to the car while retaining Cole in the backup scoring PG role he thrived in last season. I'd also offer an extension to Cole in the 15M AAV range.
I expect the Magic to either retain both Fultz *and* Cole in the exact roles they were in last season and use Black more as a SG/SF with scrap/injury minutes at PG or I expect them to trade Cole in the next 10 days and install Black as Fultz's backup for next season.

It’s very rare guards pop in their rookie year. Also history here says Suggs Anthony and Fultz might miss 10-20 games due to injury. This guy was at the top of the ncaa in minutes played. That is a part of this. He will have opportunities.

I think the only thing that will make me really scratch my head is if we extend Fultz now.

That's the angle, availability. I think it allows Black to get reps and the team will succeed.bigdogdylan5 wrote:eyriq wrote:I don't think what happens with Fultz matters really, Black is going to beast. I suspect he earns the starting role his rookie year.

Now what WILL the FO do?
Keep absolutely everyone, hand them all contracts, and face the repercussions later even though it’s plainly obvious doing that won’t work.

Steve Ceruti does it again. Freaks out and says we drafted elfrid Payton at 6 (I will be in shock if he anywhere close to him at end of careers). He is like the only national presence voice we get and he freaks out at the draft every year. He didn’t like Franz, last year he said I quote “we are stuck with Paolo at 1”. Sigh

Re: The Anthony Black Thread
I like the idea of somehow (ha somehow) offloading Fultz, starting Anthony, and moving him back to the bench in favor of Black sometime this year.
In terms of contract, I would be willing to dangle Mr Anthony up to 20m of bench hush money....because that is what he is good at and can really carve a name out in the league.

This is what I expect as well, at least the keeping everyone for this year part, because I think they do want to make the playoffs and having Fultz and Cole both here gives them the best chance of that.
Although I could also see them trading Cole for a 4 who can play some 5 or a 4 who can play some 3.

Re: The Anthony Black Thread
Black was the clear BPA IMO. Obviously Whitmore wasn't in the cards, and Black was a tier ahead of Coulibaly, Hendricks, and Walker.
The fit is definitely strange as of today.. it was a questionable fit for everyone projected at 6 though. I agree with others - I'd really like to see Black getting on-ball PG minutes and there's just not a lot of those to go around right now. His combination of size, vision, finishing, and decision making with the ball in his hands is really intriguing to me. He got to the line a ton too.
Fultz is the clear odd man out here IMO. I don't see the FO making a move before the season though.

100% correct!

And Suggs and Black can? I guess Anthony and Black can play together, but that means Black is the primary backup SG (and that G-Harris is no longer a Magician).

Black and Suggs have a better chance of having success together than Fultz and Black IMO.

Re: The Anthony Black Thread
Here's a stat...
Going back to the 1992-1993 season, only 5 NCAA freshman have recorded at least 70 steals and at least 20 blocks in one year.
Anthony Black in 22-23
Zion Williamson in 18-19
Marcus Smart in 12-13
Tyreke Evans in 08-09
Cookie Belcher in 96-97

Re: The Anthony Black Thread
To be fair, the 2-3 year vision might be Suggs + Black being our lock down defensive starters.
Combine that with Franz who already has positive defensive stats.
Paulo + Wendell go positive and suddenly we are a better defensive then 3pt team and we literally out free throw shoot the opponent vs 3pts.

Didn’t we play like 40 games without guards last season?

I like that plan and Cole might even prove worthy of a big extension and a big role for the long-term...Alternatively, I'm shopping for that pure scoring guard NOW that might be a perfectly complementary guy next to Black long-term...of course, I'm talking Simons or Herro. Suggs can come off the bench with every opportunity to grab that starting SG job and keep it...he also could be the trade chip that brings back (in a package) an even more elite scorer...no way am I rooting for this, but if Black is all he might be, I just don't know that Suggs, as currently constructed, has a significant role...One thing I won't do is trade Suggs nearby, particularly to MIA and have to face him 4x yearly. I love the guy and hope he makes it, but we have to build the best TEAM we can and Black is another shot at good-defense, no shooting guys on the roster.
