Is Dejounte Murray Underrated, Overrated, or Just Right?

Post#1 » by TorontoBarneys » Fri Jun 23, 2023 2:55 pm

I'm curious to know where people's opinions lie with this guy.

He looked pretty great on the Spurs but that was a tanking team going nowhere but now in Atlanta he looks worse but it may simply be a bad fit with Trae. What kind of team would you guys see Dejounte excelling in?

There's also some notions of character issues with his antics last summer but nothing egregious.

He'd be 'just right' in the purple and gold

They weren't tanking when Murray was there, they were just bad. Him and White didn't fit too well too, injuries got in the way too.
His antics are bad, doesn't help that he can't back it up with stellar play all the time.

He is a good player, underpaid in the current contract, can easily be your third best player in a championship team, as he is a good defender, can score and distribute at a above average rate. You could do a lot worse. He is a Brown lite maybe? Less shooting and scoring, more assists

underrated

guy could really thrive out there with a roster built around him.

Like imagine if he was the starting PG in Brooklyn next year

he's overrated if you think you should build your team around him

As a PG on the right kind of team he can get back to fringe all-star level. Playing SG next to Trae doesn't raise his value

Although I like him as a player, I'd love for the Hawks to trade him to a PG needy team and get back equal value for a better fitting SG or BIG

Just right IMO. Top 30-40 player. Great size for the 1, undersized at the 2. He's a bit of a tweener, definitely not a true PG (he isn't great at the Pick and Roll), his more natural position is SG but he is a bit undersized there and isn't a great shooter but he did make a lot of progress from 3pt range last year. He is a good scorer and can create his own offense but he just doesn't get to the FT line at all, so it brings down his efficiency.

His defense is solid, I wouldn't say great. But he's one of the best in the league at playing passing lanes and pickpocketing players, leading to fast breaks.

More or less properly rated. Somewhere between 10-15 among starting PGs.

Name one thing he does great, or even very good?

He isn't quick, his jumper is extremely inconsistent (especially anything outside of midrange), he isn't a great playmaker and you can leave him open because he is about a bad three point shooter as Marcus Smart.

He has quick hands and if you allow him to gamble lanes he will get steals. But he isn't a good one on one defender.

If he ever accepts he would be the 3rd or 4th best player in a winning lineup, he could find a perfect role.

But in no way is he an 18 shot a game (5 of them from 3) point guard.

He's a starting caliber player who thinks he's a star. I think you can win with him as a starter but will never have success if he's one of your stars.

He is basically the perfect spec PG you would want height and length wise. He does have a longer wingspan than Dick also for what it's worth.

Up there with Vucevic as biggest overpays in recent memory.

I really enjoyed watching Murray run pick and roll with Poeltl in San Antonio. But Murray isn't quite dynamite enough as a scoring threat to be elite as a pick & roll threat, so I don't think letting him run dozens of pick & rolls every game is what you want your teams offense to be. He's a pretty underrated midrange shooter at this point, so he does give you a nice bail out option. He hit plenty of heroic tough shots for Atlanta last year, when their offense was otherwise bogged down.

On defense he's disruptive with his length and activity, but I dont feel he ever became the defender everyone hoped he would. He's not always dialed in on that end, and he's not as quick as many like to picture he is. He's a really good athlete though, and does make some really nice defensive plays.

I think Dejounte is a top 50 player in the NBA.

He might thrive in that scenario, but the team won't...

I'm glad a Spurs fan is critiquing him. I never got the hype. I don't know who was blowing him up.

He takes a lot of off the dribble shots(3’s in particular) that I just don’t believe helps him or any team. Also don’t know if he’s a good defender on anyone his size or bigger.
Still really good low level all star like player.

If he spent an offseason studying how to flop, er, I mean, "draw contact," like Austin Reaves did, then he would go back to being in the All Star discussion imo.
He has that level of skill as a scorer, but he's not an elite athlete or outside shooter so he'll struggle to get the numbers he needs in this era until he learns how to "draw contact" (read: initiate contact then snap head back and collapse onto the floor) like his peers.
He's improved a ton as a passer but is still mostly making basic reads out there, with his high assist games generally just being a product of high usage.
His defense has always been overrated imo. He's disruptive but also finds himself out of position a lot.

I never understand these threads. What is he rated? Then I can tell you if he's overrated or underrated.
