Re: 2023 NBA Draft, part 2 – Thurs, 8PM, June 22
Just a thought. Should the Celtics have asked Memphis for a different #1 pick in a future year? Is it really better to have these multiple 2nd round picks? Im wondering if any of these picks may be involved in q trade this off season. Hoarding 2nd round picks was an Ainge thing and Stevens has had the opposite approach.
Brad Stevens on fans who want the Celtics to tank: "I don’t think they’ll like me all that much then."

Absolutely incredible draft night for the Celtics. To add a young prospect with great measurements, defense, some passing and slashing ability while also adding 4 future seconds is an A+ draft grade for our situation. This guy is a corner 3 away from being a high level NBA role player.

Walsh tied with 6 other players for 5th place in the college corner three point shooting drill by hitting 68 percent of his shots

I guess maybe he already has that corner 3

-The guy we picked at 38 was higher on my draft board than the the guy Miami picked at 18, so by trading back, we still got a really good prospect. Walsh was arguably just as good (especially in terms of fit, with what this celtics team needs) as anyone who was still on the board at 25..we moved back 13 spots and still got him
I'll revisit this if they use the mle and who it is.
Ok, you go do that.
Either way, Walsh is still just as good (especially in terms of fit, and what this team needs) as anyone who was on the board at pick 25 - and he's better than the guy the Heat took at pick 18, imo.
I don't get infatuated with second round players, especially one's that are picked close to 40.
This player will not contribute in any major way next season.

And we all hope that one say you'll come to the realization that Hal big board means jack squat. Like who cares where you had the prospects ranked. Didn't realize I was supposed to take that into consideration before I graded the pick
Chill with your optimism, feel free to ignore my post entirely because all you do is chase me down and tell me how wrong I am. I don't care.

Amazing job of trolling the instant gratification brigade by trading down multiple times by Brad Stevens. He got amazing value out of every trade except perhaps the last one (#39 for a future second rounder). But it's pretty clear that they didn't like anybody left on the board at that point so I'm not mad that they pushed it into the future. Much better to preserve an asset and maintain flexibility than make the pick, have everybody realize the guy selected sucks and not being able to recoup any value.
I love guys that play defense, that play hard and that play unselfish so I'm all for the Walsh pick.

Loved Brad's first move. Drop back 6 spots to pick up two second round picks and unlock the $5m MLE. There were plenty of guys that looked like they'd still be available at #31 that I would have taken at #25, so it seemed like a no brainer given all the other elements it added in terms of the future 2nds and MLE.
Second trade was great too. Nnaji was a guy I would have really liked, even at #25, so bit disappointed to see us move back but the value was really strong getting #34 and #39. There were still plenty of good options left so didn't feel like we'd entirely miss the boat ending up at #34 and could take a big swing at #39.
Third trade got me a little worried. I didn't like the idea of being left at the back of the queue in terms of choice for those early 2nd round guys. There were still enough intriguing guys that you could be confident you were getting a solid lottery ticket but I would have rather had more choice than taking the leftovers. I was pumped when we landed Walsh and Gueye though and thought Brad nailed all 3 trades.
Walsh was clearly a guy they liked for #35 and I had last season said it'd be nice to have a defensive specialist on the wing, so solid albeit not exciting choice. Gueye has boom/bust written all over him. Could end up being nothing, could end up being the next Pascal Siakam. That's exactly the kind of player I want to see drafted in this range by my team. With the addition of a third two-way contract loved seeing us move back and get an exciting lottery ticket.
Then the final trade comes through and took the excitement out of the draft for me and left it just being a relatively boring yet effective draft.
The picks we've landed seem like they're decent, which is a big positive. It's not like we've got the Bucks 2024 pick. Dallas is the worst, but best of Detroit/Washington 2025 could be really high, likely Portland's 2026 post-Dame, Atlanta's 2027 is far enough out that you don't know. So that's nice and Brad obviously looked around at what 5 second round draft picks can you get you at the deadline and thought he should load up which makes sense.
So ultimately Walsh, the $5m MLE, 4 decent future 2nds for minor deadline deals for #25. Pretty good manoeuvring even if it's not thrilling stuff.
yep. He got too cute. I didn't mind the trade backs but once we had two picks with some intriguing talent still on the board he should have drafted a couple of them. I'm not mad at the Walsh pick though there were other guys I'd have taken, but I am disappointed that we didn't use the 2nd pick.

all the above were worth drafting and would have made the roster. Some actual upside too with potential at being major contributors. But Brad didn't see that and chose to kick the can down the road. Oh well. Let's just hope we don't regret it like we do with the 2020 draft (Bane) and even more disastrous 2019 draft (passed on Poole, Claxton, Keldon Johnson multiple times)
Celtic scouting is terrible.
Anything outside a top 10 pick has been bad for a loooong time.
Traded away the best prospect they pick since tatum in Bane
I think passing up on Ben Sheppard might turn out to be like a Bane situation for Boston. Even Max Lewis as well.

Feel like this site has far superior scouting than the team does.

Meanwhile just to conclude my thoughts of yesterday.. I do like Jordan Walsh but I also feel there werel players that could have been drafted That would have made a far bigger impact for Boston much earlier than Walsh will.
I do wonder if Brad trading down Was the result of a player he wanted going right before his pick.. Perhaps a few times...
Or was this all Some sort of financial plan for the long term future..

Many promising bigs in the second round. Shame we passed on all of them
Nnaji, Gueye, Leonard Miller even TJD with pick 57 (great move by GS to trade for him)
Brad should have added another Big project as Kabengele is leaving
Now sign some undrafted bigs - Tshiebwe, Osunniyi, Manny Bates whoever

Eh, there was no sense in making 2 draft picks. A veteran team that's a contender doesn't need 2 rookies. Hard enough for 1 rookie to try and make the team and somehow scratch and claw for some minutes.
And as for your list, Walsh is a better prospect than all of those guys imo, except GG. And I had GG ranked just barely ahead of Walsh, on the same tier. But that's just BPA. Good call on Manny Bates. He's good. Solid rim runner, rim protector type of guy. Can even score around the basket pretty good.
If he is still available, give him a call. Plus he's a Butler guy, which obviously Brad will love.

Welcome BGreen024!!
Yes, agreed. I do have some "instant gratification" regret that we didn't keep a Nnaji or Gueye type big, but we already have some projects in the pipeline (Kabengele), and there will be options with those future 2nd round picks to get the Euro/Afro 6'11' shooting/blocking steal/unicorn.
And lest we forget: the 5M MLE. That is something that Brad can either use in a trade or to add an affordable vet for the 2023/24 run. I think Boston is going to be a very desired destination for FA's this year now that we have the 3rd complimentary star.
As for Walsh, he may actually contribute this season as a defensive specialist in the regular season. Good passer too. And if he gets his timing on the long ball, watch out!

From the article:
“Once I got out of Arkansas, I’m now in a position where I don’t have handcuffs on me. I’m able to shoot and make plays for people. I have that flexibility to show that I can do all those things. I was stuck in a role, but now they’ll see the real Jordan.”
Yes, let's now see the real Jordan.

With all those 2nds pouring in, I thought maybe Brad would keep two, but for a contending team with a lot of contracts still to work out, and previous 2nd rounds waiting in the wings, it's better to keep those 2nds for future drafts and trades.
One rookie is enough this year, and Walsh fits a need. I'm more interested in what Brad has planned for that MLE. Is it used in a trade, to move a contract, or maybe some vet help in shooting, PG, or back up big?

I can't see him on the main squad
