I for one won't miss him. He never wanted to facilitate. He wanted to be one of the big 3 scorers. A healthy Brogs and White will more than make up for his leaving. He participated in a general team lagging on defense anyway. I'm not the least bit sorry.

BostonCouchGM wrote:glad to see him leave but people saying White is better and will easily replace him are laughable. White is nowhere near the impactful defender Smart is. There's tiers separating them. White can't stay in front of his man half the time and he can't defend 1-5 like Smart often does. There'll be a massive downgrade on defense going from Smart to White. Where White WILL be as good if not an outright improvement in on offense. White, nor Smart, are starting caliber point guards. But we don't run our offense through point guards anyway so it's a moot point. I for one would rather have passes swung to an open White than Smart. Offensively we'll be an elite unit. Maybe the best since the 80s Bird teams.

Hahaha! White was all defense this year and smart isn’t.
Defend 1-5. Gtfoh! He can’t defend Trae, and can’t stop Gabe Vincent from having a career game and series against us. Defense is overrated. We need better 2 way players. Smart is a bench player period. He would do well in memphis playing that role when Morant goes back.

Heart and soul.

I understand the trade, but it tells me a lot about the direction this team is heading.

Hopefully it works. I fear we have lost the glue that sticks a team together.

Really great role player. He was also polarizing and very overrated here as a "Number 3" in a "Big 3". But if you look at him for his talent level and who he really is then yeah he was excellent for what they had him for defensively and very inconsistent offensively where he would either get really hot or shoot the team out of games. I believe Derrick White is an upgrade for what this team needs now. This is now Tatum and Browns team

Pretty crushing for me. A guy like Smart on only $18 million for 3 more years is a huge part of winning culture. We don't have any Alpha locker room leaders other than Grant Williams (who will probably be gone now) and Al Horford. Smart was the only guy with balls and heart and held everyone accountable.

I then listened to the CLNS team's take on losing Smart, and that clown John Zannis is telling everyone that Marcus Smart is basically the same player as Dillon Brooks lol. I feel sorry for the other guys on this show who have to pretend they agree with this banana. He basically says everyone and everything about this team is crap and throws enough mud against the wall that when someone like Smart is traded or the Celtics don't win a championship he acts like he was right all along. I have no idea why they let this guy run the show unless he created it.
One day Marcus Smart will be defensive player of the year, mark my words.

Glad to see them keep his hair green in the pic too. Not because of the Celtics and being selfish there as a fan, but because of the connection to his mother and her wishes.

A day later, still sucks. People that didn't appreciate Smart as a player and a person still suck as well. Dude always gave his all, someday they'll probably rename the hustle award he keeps winning after him.

The criticism's people had for him were largely unwarranted. He was a "chucker" and "wasn't a facilitator", etc. He always had a good turnover to assist ratio and always ranked pretty low on usage, particularly for a pg. His real "sin" was being a below average 3pt shooter and still being willing to take them (as I'm sure he was coached to do).

Here's to hoping Derrick White can fill the void.

I love Marcus the player and what I know of the person. And this thread is a fitting place to be sentimental about the person.

But it’s also worth keeping in mind that in terms of basketball players, the lineup gets better both with White (or Brogdon) at point guard and Porzingis at anything.

BPM last year/career:
Smart -1.0/-0.3
White 2.4/1.4
Brogdon 2.8/1.4
Porzingis 4.3/2.1

How about WS/48 last season/career:
Smart 0.092/0.092
White 0.154/0.119
Brogdon 0.161/0.122
Porzingis 0.174/0.133

PER?
Smart 12.1/12.4
White 15.4/15.3
Brogdon 18.2/17.0
Porzingis 23.1/20.4

okay but let’s look at the playoffs!
Playoff BPM/WS per 48/PER
Smart career 0.4/0.075/12.8
Smart this year 0.8/0.112/15.4

White career 1.4/0.119/15.3
White this year 2.4/0.154/15.4

Brogdon career 1.4/0.122/17.0
Brogdon this year 2.8/0.161/18.2

Porzingis career 2.1/0.129/18.1
Career playoffs is 10 games with DAL in 2020 and 2021

Reposting this for perhaps the last time.

The Marcus part starts around 2:20, followed by a bit decrying what could be called an oversimplified concept of "alpha".

Banned temporarily for, among other sins, being "Extremely Deviant".

Probably yes. Smart averaged about 8apg the first 2.5 months of last season, then dropped to 4 or so as the offense became more Jay-centric.

Smart *could* distribute and be a “true” PG but I think Brad just indicated he’s comfortable playing through the stars instead. Include Brogdon in that — it’s a lot of iso scoring — they’ll need to grow individually and mesh collectively.

I just don’t get this move. Brad preaches quick decision making on offense. We lose grit, defence and passing with this move. Totally against what was lacking last playoffs.
Is KP getting extended? Seems like too much for a rental. If so, aren’t we going to be as stuffed as PHX in a couple of years time cap wise??
KP hasn’t played with elite wings like the Js. Will be very interesting on offense.
Anything but a ring will make this trade look bad.

How is that fair to say when we have 0 titles when smart was here? If we come up just short again it would be just like all the years we had smart as far as the end result.
