Are You Happy With What Weaver Did Well Last Night?
Obviously the 5th pick is what most are looking at, but I don't know about the trade to get a few picks ahead - I really don't.
Maybe you would wanted another guy? Maybe trade up? Trade down? Trade the pick for an established player?
I don't watch anything outside the NBA, so I'm curious to see the poll numbers.

I’m first in with a “No”, but I’ll be very happy if I’m wrong.
Didn’t like the Ausar pick. Wanted a trade down or just a trade out for proven talent.
That said, our defense was horrid last year, and both of these picks should help with that.

I would have traded down and taken Hendricks but I don't know what offers came in.
As for trading up from 31 - I wouldn't have done that either.
Looking back at the Draft it seems pretty obvious Weaver got the dudes he wanted and our perimeter defense is better today than it was yesterday.
Now comes free agency

I didn't see anyone that specifically stood out that could be had at #5; so Weaver did would I would have done and picked the guy with the greatest upside.
I have very little to go on but liked the Sasser pick. The guy was a main cog in one of the best college teams in the country. I tend to think guards who fit that description have a much better chance of succeeding in the nba than bigs (who can be successful just because they are tall).

Yeah, more or less where I'm at.
I worry Ausar has high bust potential and I feel like spacing on offense is going to be a problem with him, Cade, Ivey, and Duren as our core. But now that he's on the team I'm going to root for the pick to be a steal and Weaver to have been a genius.

He wasn't my first choice but we were all so scattered on that pick that I'll leave it up to our GM

It’s not what I wanted but he did get two good wing defenders and avoided the bigs so it not awful. I like the kid from Princeton and was hoping we get him in the summer league. He was a long shot to get a look so I’m happy. He at least a different type of big than we have

Re: Are You Happy With What Weaver Did Well Last Night?
I said yes because it was okay. It looks like we’re going to take D a bit more seriously this year, so that’s good. Ausar could be great, more likely a solid starter. Our new core - Cade, Ivey, Duren and Ausar.
That being said (and without knowing what was offered), I have a few issues.
- Walker or Hendricks would have been solid picks. Didn’t we have a chance to move down and get some extra assets?
- Whitmore fell like a rock. Minor meniscus issues? No big deal. Bogdonovich + #31 wasn’t enough to move up? He looked pissed and he’s going to kill it. We missed a home run swing.
- I knew nothing of Sassar before the draft. He looks like a junk yard dog that’s a good fit for the Pistons and a great 2nd round pick. Oops- I meant FIRST round pick. Maybe we could have just stayed at #31 and got him. And if we missed him, just take Leonard Miller or GG. That’s what 2nd rounders are for - take a chance on someone.

We have a dysfunctional team, and no young player will be developed in a dysfunctional team.

Re: Are You Happy With What Weaver Did Well Last Night?
I said “no”
1) I like Ausar. I just worry about his shooting ability, or lack thereof. Hope he proves me wrong here and can hit shots at least well enough to keep defenses honest. If he can get up over 35% from 3, this likely becomes a “yes” vote.
2) Sasser is a guy I think could become decent. Just feel like we traded future assets and moved up for him when we didn’t need to (could have got him at 31). Also, backup G was not high on my list of needs. We are pretty deep at G (Ivey, Cade, Ausar can all get G minutes long-term, let alone others also here)

That’s overly pessimistic nonsense and you know it.
Yeah, Killian is looking like a bad pick. Weaver blew that one.
You can’t tell me you didn’t see offensive development from Ivey last year. You can’t tell me you didn’t see Cade improve throughout his rookie year. You can’t tell me Duren didn’t get more and more comfortable last year.
What exactly about THIS team, not previous teams, is dysfunctional? We got rid of our bad X’s and O’s coach. We have premium young players at every position but PF, and a decent one there. We have a couple of solid vets in Burks and Bojan, and money to get another one. Another decent depth wing (Livers) and an interesting guard (Sasser) makes nine.
I agree there are three anchors on the roster right now, with zero chance (Bagley), or a slight chance (Killian and Wiseman) of being actual solid players. That makes us dysfunctional?
Strong disagree. We’re overly young, and we’ve had some bad luck, but we’re getting there.

I think Wiseman is gonna be pretty good and will gain a lot of value by the trade deadline if he plays, but the contract is too heavy to expect too much

Re: Are You Happy With What Weaver Did Well Last Night?
Weaver very clearly "attacked the draft" as he's said in the past making sure he got the two guys he wanted. It seemed like that happened last year as well but there was certainly a lot more excitement/hype last year for Ivey + Duren. If these guys both end up being solid rotation players by year three the draft was probably a win. Or if Ausar ends up being a solid starter by year three or four. I think its pretty likely that Sasser will be more ready to go being one of the better players in college basketball and being older but I do like how Ausar has carried himself thus far. The real first feel will be in a few weeks for summer league it'll be interesting to see how both of them do.

Re: Are You Happy With What Weaver Did Well Last Night?
I guess this belongs in this thread instead of creating a new one.
I'm surprised there isn't more talk about this unless I missed it...
Of course there's a lot of assumptions like, what is "stuff" and what are the particulars on the 2025 1st (protections, is it Utah's own 1st etc.) but for the sake of argument lets just say that the stuff is minor and that it's Utah's unprotected 2025 1st or, lets say, top 10 protected and lets assume that Sasser is there at 28 and they keep 31. It's essentially...
Thompson+Sasser
or
Hendricks+Sasser+31+2025 1st.
Ehhh, I'm taking that trade. Even if the 2025 1st is a late one, is the difference between Ausar and Hendricks worth 31+2025 1st? Lets hope that the Ausar swing is a homerun because that might be a mistake not taking that trade IMO.

We have Bojan, Burks and 13 below average 3 point shooters, most of them well below average shooters, some inept shooters.
We added a couple of rookies who are supposed to be good defenders, but we are still a disaster as a team on the defensive end.
Our players don't fit well together. We have 4 centers and 0 players capable of playing PF.
Casey is a good coach, there is only so much he can do with what he was given. Monty is also a good coach, let's see what he can do with that dysfunctional group.
You can call it bad luck, I call it consistency. We had the same start 3 seasons in a row, you can blame injuries or whatever you want, in reality, the roster is dysfunctional. We had almost 50% chance of landing the #5 pick, the highest odds by far, we landed where we should in this draft.
We were super lucky to get Cade, so no, we were lucky and not unlucky.

Maybe there's zero pressure on Weaver and Monty to accelerate this build immediately?
Maybe the organisation believes Ausar is most likely to succeed?
It's all well and good to say that we could have made that trade and got Hendricks and Sasser at those spots but if we do that deal does the Draft play out exactly as it did?
We'll never know

If Utah offered 9, 28, and a 2025 1st….we could have easily negotiated 9/16 if we wanted to.
Which makes me think Weaver and Co really like Ausar
