Be 100% honest. Who did you like in previous drafts?

Post#1 » by IllMagic04 » Sat Jun 24, 2023 3:42 pm

Feel free to go back as far as you want but I'll start in 13. Its the honor system as I aint checking recipts. Only talking about guys that were in our range.

2013 - I was a Tre Burke guy. I was down to take him at 2 or trade down. To make matters worse I had Ben Mcalmore ahead of Vic too. So Dipo was 3rd on my board. I was happy with Dipo though.

2014 - I was holding out hope that due to the injury Embid would fall to us. Since he didn't I was on the Exum train. I wanted McDermott with the 2nd pick. I was ok with AG

2015 The top of the draft was set. I wanted WCS. I was not a fan of Mario Hezonja

2016 I was really high on Buddy Heild though we had no shot to get him. Obviously like most of us I was furious we traded Oladipo and our pick.

2017 - Was praying Fox would drop but realistically I was very much in the Malik Monk camp. When he dropped that 40 point game vs UNC I was sold lol. I was good with Issac but I really wanted an offensive player.

2018 - I was all the way in on Trae Young. When the news of the ATL/DAL trade broke I wanted to trade whatever was needed to move up for Young. Heartbreaking night. I was ok taking Bamba but I was so disappointed we didn't get Trae

2019 - I wanted Keldon Johnson. I would have been ok with NAW. Was stunned we took Chuma. Was not happy

2020- I wanted Cole but I didn't think he'd be there when we picked.. but I also wanted Tyrell Terry :( . I was very happy we got Cole

2021- I was opposed to taking Scottie Barnes. Even though he was ROY I still stand by that. I absolutely was a Bouknight supporter. I was not happy we took Franz. I was a fool that year. I was suprised Suggs was there so I was good with that

2022 -I was all in on Paolo. I was 100% sold. One of my happiest draft moments. Would have been better if WOJ didn't spoil it

2023 Hendricks and Hawkins. Not happy with Black but Im good with Jett

2013 Noel or mclemore
2014 AG, Payton
2015 Mario
2016 no one
2017 Wanted to trade down+ add more assets if needed for later picks. Wanted Mitchell and/or Bam
2018 Bamba
2019 no one
2020 no one
2021 Suggs+Bouknight
2022 Jabari (though i did say if Paolo is actually 6'10 250 then he's the choice. Was just afraid of him being smaller than advertised like the previous #1 pick Cade)
2023 Cam whitmore/taylor hendricks and Hawkins

Wesley Johnson and Ben McLemore. Those are the two that I wanted.

Last season I was, still am, big on getting Keegan along with whomever we picked at #1. I wanted Kris Murray this year’s draft.

These are the guys i liked before each draft who were around our range, some of them were already gone before our pick

2013: Noel..... Dipo
2014: If noone fells out of the Top 3 Marcus Smart.... Exum  / Gordon
2015: all in Porzingis..... Turner, Winslow / hated Mario, never understood how a G/wing who can barely dribble is so highly rated
2016: As long as we were bad & around 5 i was all in on Tatum. Also loved Murray because i've seen a few Canada Pan American Games in 2015 because of Andrew Nicholson  & Murray was awesome vs team USA @ 18 years old, but after we started winning i had no interest in the draft anymore and didnt scout anyone
2017: Isaac & Fox / Hated DSJ
2018: All in on Trae (Thought Doncic goes No.1 so no chance for a trade), JJJ, Bamba :nonono:
2019: Herro & Brandon Clarke (all advanced stats guys loved him)
2020: Vassell & Hayes & Aleksej Pokusevski / Hated Cole
2021: Giddey & Sengun / Hated Bouknight
2022: Chet
2023: 6: Black, Ausar & Hendricks 11: Bufkin... Dick, Wallace

2013 - Oladipo. Liked him pre draft and loved that we took him. Didn't like anyone else except him and CJ.
2014 - Jabari Parker and Marcus Smart. Didn't want AG and didn't like AG his entire time with Orlando.
2015 - Mario Hezonja, Devin Booker, and Tyus Jones. Still like Tyus.
2016 - Didnt like anyone from this draft.
2017 - Dennis Smith Jr. and Donovan Mitchell from Louisville
2018 - Hated Bamba and JJJ, liked SGA, Porter, and Okogie.
2019 - NAW 100%. I also liked Brandon Clarke
2020 - Tyrell Terry, Saddiq Bey, and Haliburton
2021 - Suggs
2022 - Hated Orlandos spot here. Was OK with Paolo or Chet.
2023 - Bufkin and Wallace

2013: Victor Oladipo
2014: Marcus Smart/Aaron Gordon
2015: Myles Turner (No where was a fan of Mario Herzonja :banghead: )
2016: Caris LeVert
2017: Lauri Markkanan, Josh Hart
2018: Mo Bamba/Wendell Carter Jr
2019: No One: I prefer to trade pick to Phoenix for Mikal Bridges as the Magic had some cap room at the time.
2020: Tyrell Terry
2021: Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner
2022: Paulo Banchero, Max Christie
2023: Taylor Hendricks/Anthony Black, Gradey Dick

2013: Oladipo
2014: Smart (I thought a Smart/Oladipo backcourt would be legendary)
2015: Porzingis (yeah he went right before us but I distinctly recall feeling devasted we missed out)
2016: I think this is around when I started tuning out
2021: I recall getting hyped for Suggs, didn't do any research. I recall going to some games early in the season and thinking Franz was a classic case of a mediocre player getting production on a bad team. Then he just kept getting better
2022: Paolo, was just an obvious choice as a 1st option upside player
2023: Ausar and Keyonte

2023 - ausar and Dick

This trade wasn't some conspiracy - it was just a GM wanting AD bad enough where in most people's eyes he overpaid by a long shot to get him.

You were banging the Tatum drum in 2017 too if I remember. I’ve had many misses over the years, but Tatum was one I was sure on, especially after his ACC tourney run. He and Isaac were my 1a and 1b that year.

I remember defending him on end from fans on this board calling him Tobias Harris. Very similar to the ones who have PTSD now and are comping Black to Elfird Payton. Just laziness.

He along with SGA are the two players who could have really changed our fortunes over the years.

SGA was definitely the more frustrating of the two as he was someone we outright passed on and caused a meltdown in the draft thread.

2013 - McLemore
2014 - Exum
2015 - WCS
2016 - Can't remember, probably didn't like anyone that would be available
2017 - Isaac and DSJ
2018 - Luka, wanted to trade the pick after lottery decided we pick 6th.
2019 - Morant, but it was clear we will be mid-teens or out of lottery so I wanted to trade the pick. I liked Shamorie Ponds as 2nd round pick.
2020 - Edwards in general, but from players projected to be available to us in mid-teens I liked Devin Vassell
2021 - Mobley, but didn't like anyone who were projected to be available to us, so I wanted to trade the pick.
2022 - All top 3 guys seemed to have visible flaws, didn't have favorite.
2023 - Didn't like the draft class and available talent, wanted to trade the pick. Cason Wallace caught my eye, though.

Yeah for sure. I liked Tatum a lot. I just knew he was never an option after the lotto.

2018 was the death draft. After drafting Isaac it made no sense to not get a guard like SGA with DJ and Fournier as the back court.

Forgot that Haliburton was my guy that year. I was sure the Warriors would take him or trade back for him and they didn’t. When he slid to #10 and Phoenix was up I wanted us to trade Gordon and our pick for #10 to take Haliburton. Would’ve made the same deal with the Kings. Like Giddey, he was just an obvious maestro on offense, but unlike Giddey Haliburton could shoot like a gun and defend well too.

2013: Dipo
2014: AG or Smart
2015: Porzingis or Hezonja
2016: Didn’t care but wasn’t a fan of trading Sabonis.
2017: Tatum then I was all over the place. Started with Fox, then DSJ then three days before was digging JI.
2018: Luka then Trae. I wanted Luka bad but Trae was very close second.
2019: Didn’t care. Knew we weren’t getting Zion and saw no one else.
2020: only saw Ant Edwards here.
2021: Jalen Green or Mobley. Skeptical of Kuminga and Barnes although I liked Barnes. Was thrilled when Suggs fell. I liked Giddy too.
2022: Banchero or Sharpe
2023: Scoot

What’s funny about all of these is that nobody cared or remembered the 2016 draft but we were all equally pissed off we traded Sabonis.

I feel like the last 10 years of drafts and players I've liked has been about who had the most star potential and guards that can shoot, handle, and make plays. There were always players I liked and knew would be good, but I was always trying to find the next guy who could carry a franchise. And 2017 and on you can see I had a type.

Off the top of my head --
2013 - Victor Oladipo and CJ McCollum (I liked CJ's game so much I would have taken him #2 that year)
2014 - Dante Exum and Zach Lavine (What a whiff Exum would have been)
2015 - Kristaps Porzingis, then Myles Turner (I was broken when KP wasn't there for us and we settled for Mario Hezonja. Would have much rather went after Turner.)
2016 - Thon Maker (I hated this draft so much. Jamal Murray was my favorite player in this draft, but I knew there was no chance he'd fall to us at #9. We needed a star player so bad that I was just all in on taking the biggest swing. I didn't love Sabnois but the trade sucked.)
2017 - Dennis Smith Jr and Malik Monk (I stand by these picks)
2018 - Trae Young (I was so in on Young being good. I was gutted when he went before us.)
2019 - Darius Garland, Nickeil Alexander Walker
2020 - Tyrese Haliburton, Cole Anthony
2021 - Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, Moses Moody, Tre Mann (I was on board with any combination of these picks, I didn't even hate the idea of Scottie Barnes)
2022 - Chet Holmgren, Paolo Banchero (Jabari Smith never felt right)
2023 - Taylor Hendricks, Kobe Bufkin (That's what I would have done this year)

2013: Noel
2014: Exum, once we picked AG I wanted Elfrid at #14
2015: Hezonja
2016: wasnt invested in draft that year
2017: Dennis Smith Jr
2018: Bamba
2019: Wasnt super invested here either but I did like NAW and Brandon Clarke but it wasnt like a strong opinion
2020: wasnt invested
2021: Suggs and Franz
2022: Chet
2023: Coulibaly and Bufkin

Not a good track record lol, btw all of these picks are just from the players that were available. Not including the players that were selecting before. Like obviously I was a big fan of Luka in 2018 and wanted to trade up for him. And I was a big Ausar fan coming into this draft. Also I remember really wanting Stauskas in 2013 lol
Keep Isaac
