Get SAS a PG

Post#1 » by tcheco » Sun Jun 25, 2023 12:31 am

Spurs only whole in their team(in theory) is a solid PG, and, in my opinion, having a steady PG play can really help Wemby develop in the best way possible.

I don't really see a great option in FA to solve that issue, FVV will be expensive, Russel is bad, Irving is a headcase, gabe vincent haven't proven enough...

So, maybe a trade? Either for a Stopgap or for Long term solution

Wizards trade: Tyus Jones
San Antonio trade: Graham, Charlotte Pick(top 14 protected 2024 or seconds 2025) + A couple of second rounders(if people think is needed)

Wizards get a some draft capital for an expiring Tyus. Not sure any team would give more for a backup PG. If they get lucky, best case scenario they get a mid first from CHA(unlikely but still). They can also try to trade graham expiring next year for something if he plays well enough.

Spurs get a stopgap PG without compromising the future, that in the best case scenario prooves good enough to be a starter and is kept. Spurs don't have to overpay in a contract to have a PG this year. Tyus has great ast/to ratio, good three point shooting, should be of help for the first year of Wemby. They also dump Graham. Perfect if they keep tre for cheap too.

Too much? too little?

Mike Conley is another option that I think it's perfect for a stopgap, and he seems like a perfect Pop player, but timberwolves don't have much incentive to trade him, as they don't have a PG neither.

Simons could be a long term solution maybe? Or his scoring first pass second would not fit with the rest of the Spurs roster?

I like Ty Jones. Solid, professional, seems like a Pop guy. Value is fair.

Seems high price for Jones based on the trade we just saw. They trade him and 2 1sts for Smart. That CHA pick has a fairly decent chance of conveying if they stay healthy and Miller is legit, IMO.

Branham is the starter now tbh. No need to trade for someone worse than him

I dont see the hornets having a snowball chance in hell in getting past 14. Why would they? Hayward says bye next summer. I think they tank the whole 2nd half.

If FVV moves on Toronto would have a dire need at PG. I think Morris is the one that will be made available.

For the Spurs I'd target Jalen Suggs. He hasn't been all that great, but his defense is good and there's still some hope he can find a way to contribute on offense. I expect the Magic to be open to moving him and he seems like a guy that could really take off under Pop.

Wait, you are saying Branham is better than Tyus Jones today?

I mean, he showed some promisse at the end of the year, but seems like a stretch to call Tyus worse than him.

Having Tyus as starter this year while Branham keeps improving would be a positive.

Morris would be made available before, of course, and just cheked and he didn't have a bad year at all. Could net a couple of seconds

Sign FVV seems the obvious answer. They can spare the money, and it won't matter on the back end.

Everyone wants tyus jones, but make weak offers like this one.

The Wizards say no. However, Monte Morris is available for that same package.

The Spurs don't need a meh starting pg. They can just re-up Tre for that. Someone young and with upside like Simons, Maxey or even Sexton? Could see it. But thinking rhe Spurs would give a first for Tyus is a non-starter.

Lamelo/?/Brandon Miller/Miles Bridges/Mark Williams + PJ Washington + Hayward + Rozier + free agents
You're saying that team doesn't have a chance to play .500 ball and get in the playoffs in either of the next 2 years? If you end up at 8 (last year 8th in the East won 41 games, i.e. 0.500), you get 2 chances for a playaoff spot, if you end up 10 (last year 10th in the East won 40 games, i.e. 0.488), you have to win 2 games. Last year with an injured Lamelo, without Miles Bridges, with a rookie Mark Williams and without Brandon Miller, they won 27 games. I think it's pretty safe to say they'll be much better, and 15+ extra wins is perfectly possible, even likely. That's a better roster than Chicago, Brooklyn, probably NY as well.

Tyus Jones isn't a significant enough upgrade over Tre Jones to justify giving up potentially a mid first rounder, particularly considering the shameful garbage Washington was able to get for Beal + Porzingis + Poole's salary dump. Especially considering Tyus Jones is expiring. IMO unless there's a significant upgrade available, I'd stand pat and develop Tre Jones and Blake Wesley, and use Devontae Graham as filler.

Personally, nothing. I'd pass on his contract. But if the FO thinks differently (doubt it, they said they were going to take their time to see what they've got and not skip steps), then probably a first + a few seconds + filler. I don't see the Spurs giving up all that much for Simons, and Portland should be able to get better value elsewhere.

Lavine isn't a PG. I don't think the Spurs want to pay big for a scoring two-guard right now. A young PG who trends more toward offense but is still able to play the position but who could be hard for ballast and some picks sounds good. But they don't need to fundamentally change their roster before playing a single game right now.
