We *know* Anthony can thrive as a 20-25 MPG back up point guard because he literally just did it last year.
I *think* Fultz could thrive as a backup PG as well, but I think it’s going to be a lot harder to move him to that role after two consecutive seasons of being the starting point guard.
Plus I think he’s gonna want a raise off his current salary on top of that.
I think you could sign Cole to 15M AAV right now.
I think it’s gonna cost 25M AAV to retain Fultz. Can you really justify that cost for a player when his replacement already appears to be in house?
I get the logic.
1. Current pay is a baseline for future pay
2. Cole is "proven" as the combo guard off the bench
3. Fultz has more unknowns around fit
It's an interesting case. The one thing that gives me pause is Fultz's upside relative to Cole.
I think Fultz has more upside, for various reasons.
I think this is and easy true. Fultz just needed to be able to be above average at two or elite at 1. Draw fouls for points, be an elite pick and roll, or a 3pt shooter. I really do like the rest of his game and think he belongs in the NBA.
Outside of that compared to Cole. Well, Cole does everything well and by proxy is amazing off the bench as a result. But he still lacks the PG mindset. He has made great strides to integrate team first into his game. Can he keep doing that? I don't know. The tools just don't appear to be there.
Yet, in all this typing of mine I forgot to mention. I do not question Fultz has an upside. I question at this point him ever reaching it. It's like watching Trevor Ariza play all over again. Dude had all the tools to be Tracy McGrady but he just "lacked" the dribbling and personality that made McGrady so good.
