Re: The Guards
Its a complicated case with our guards.
We want to win next season, but we also doesnt want to limit our future ceiling.
Fultz is most likely better than Black next season but worse long term.
Anthony is better serving as a backup and will propably want to start on another team so investing into him is risky.
Suggs will propably never have skill level of a starter point guard but he also has the highest ceiling and longest contract.
Problem with Fultz is not that he will derail Black improvement but that he will get paid based on team success not his own ability. Same as Bledsoe who was paid in similar situation and ended up as one of the worst contracts in the nba.
I see the signs already. People think he was the reason we started to win while we would win with any half competent guard rotstion and Fultz was actually a negative player.
If we really want to win next season i would try to sign somebody who could help us short term and be able to play next to Black long term. Its definetly not Fultz. Its not Anthony if we want to go far in the playoffs and its a big question mark with Suggs.

Re: The Guards
I've never thought of positions through this three role framework before.Knightro wrote:Petre1978 wrote:Suggs is not a PG ( combo guard )

There’s three positions in the NBA.
1. Primary ball handler (guys who bring the ball up and initiate plays)
2. Off-ball guards and wings (guys who spot up or create offense in the halfcourt after receiving a pass)
3. Bigs (guys who are the primary screen setters offensively and/or hang out in the dunker spot)
Cole is a primary ball handler even if he’s not a traditional pass first playmaking type of guard.
Fultz is obviously a primary ball handler as well.
We were all hoping Suggs would be one to as well, but candidly his ball handling is so poor that he just isn’t really capable of being one.
The issue is that it appears on paper that Black, given his shortcomings as a shooter, needs to be a primary ball handler as well to maximize his effectiveness.
But you can’t play three of those guys in one rotation.
So something’s gotta give.
You need at least one primary ball handler on the court. They are responsible for bringing the ball up the court, initiating the offense, and making key decisions. Great ball handlers often have high basketball IQs, excel in passing, and have the ability to read the defense and make the correct plays. Fultz, Cole, Black, Franz, and Paolo can all play this role to varying degrees.
Are there benefits to having multiple ball handlers on the court at the same time? I imagine you get a boost in playmaking and ball movement.
How many off ball guards and wings do we have? Players that excel at shooting, cutting, and off ball movement to create scoring opportunities? Franz, Harris, Jett, Houstan, and I actually think that Black can. He looked great off the ball at Arkansas, just over indexed in cutting and attacking the rim.
I like this way of thinking about it. We seem to have two players who can play on or off the ball in Franz and Black.
What role does Suggs play? He feels like a defensive specialist right now.
Edit: we can consider Paolo an off-ball option as well as you get him the ball and he goes to work in ISO sets.
We are pretty versatile which is intentional.

either way we need to come up off one or more of these guards to be real.....it also occurred to me recently that maybe i might have been selling weltman short, maybe he might be more of a hardline GM....because when i think back to his conference when he said he expects some guys to "take steps" and people being "gifted minutes" for whatever reason i thought he was referring to the rookies but it occurred to me that weltman was referring to players already on the roster or at least that's how i took it....made me raise an eyebrow....no more Mr. Niceguy GM?

Re: The Guards
My issue with this situation is really not Fultz specific so much as it’s skill set overlap and maximizing an asset specific.
No I don’t care for Markelle as a player, but there are certainly circumstances before this past Thursday where resigning him would have been totally fine.
But the fact is the Magic just drafted (on paper of course) a better, younger and cheaper version of Fultz, yet they seem to have (we will see if this changes) no desire to actually replace the original with the new version.
Given their respective weaknesses, I just don’t see a scenario where Fultz and Black can effectively share the court next season or even in the short term beyond that. It just won’t work unless there’s wildly unexpected shooting progression from one of them.
And this is not some new development. You can go back through the old draft threads and see that I was against drafting any point guard - that included Scoot, Amen and Black - not because any of them are bad prospects, but because if you’re using a high lottery pick on a point guard, they gotta actually play point guard to develop.
I’ll also throw this out there so everyone will stop suggesting I’m just some irrational Fultz hater…
If the Magic had drafted Whitmore at 6 or Hendricks at 6 or Walker at 6 or literally anyone else that isn’t another point guard who needs to be on the ball, but also doesn’t shoot, I would be more comfortable with Fultz being the starting point guard and potentially even getting that fat new contract.
But not now. Not after they just drafted his obvious replacement. Now they have to actually, you know, replace him.

Does the front office agree with you? Why would they or why wouldn't they?
I think they agree with you, you seem to have some trauma around what you think the front office will do with Fultz though, which I don't get. Maybe this was inevitable after staying engaged 2016-2021, while I dodged the emotional scarring by tuning completely out.

This has been disproven several times.
Cole and Fultz literally returned on the same day.
Gary Harris also missed a huge amount time in October and November. Wendell Carter also missed a bunch of time before Christmas. Paolo missed a stretch of games early. Suggs had two different stretches where he was hurt and missed time before Christmas.
Go back and look at some of those November games that the Magic lost when they started 5-20 and you’ll see RJ Hampton, Caleb Houstan, Terrence Ross, Admiral Schofield, Kevin Harris, Mo Bamba littered throughout those box scores.

This is exactly what I expect.
I think the Magic will have a winning record next season. I think they’ll at least make the play in and possibly the playoffs.
I just cannot envision a situation where they don’t try and “build” on that progress by signing their starting point guard to a new contract.
It’s easy to say something like “oh well if Fultz doesn’t progress, then just don’t re-sign him” when that just isn’t as realistic of an option as it appears.
If the Magic are not willing to take a step back this season, and as of right now there’s no indication they are, then they’re certainly not going to be willing to take a step back in 24-25 coming off of successful 23-24 season, ya know?

I think there's something here...Weltman is always positive, vague and supportive in his comments. But he's a multi-million dollar GM of a professional franchise with a job to do. He's had the luxury of a patient situation with relatively low expectation of winning vs development. He's basically been running a JV team, bringing in new kids, regardless of position, based more on opportunity, to see what he can find. He's no dummy - there's got to be a moment where the priority shifts, the vision clarifies, where he believes he's got enough worthy pieces to start really building around them. That's when pieces (even good ones) that don't fit the vision are discarded and the focus is on building the TEAM. At the same time, he's built towards a financially flexible point at just the right moment in the progression.
He's been collecting assets, pouncing on good value buys(Fultz, Suggs), making some missteps along the way(Bamba, Hampton, Isaac-due to injury), getting some unexpected value (CHI & DEN trades were for the picks - Harris & WCJ were nice benefits) - which is part of the process, and I think we are entering the next phase of his vision...this is the serious time, even if we don't win much more than last year, I think we are very close to drilling down to what we are to become and moving out pieces that don't fit his puzzle, even if they look like negative value trades. With the looming cap situation of extensions to come, this is the time to set up for the move(s) that take us to the next level and complete the core of the roster. I think we are, essentially, done with leaning into the draft and will now focus on the trade and FA market for further growth (by design). We may not make a big glamorous move this summer (we might) but, more likely, look for bargain, good-fitting, vets who can support our core and, at least temporarily, fill roles that might soon be filled by higher-level guys, when the opportunity presents. It's also key to not get locked into any long-term commitments with players who are not part of the long-term vision. Our team is very, very young and that is fine for right now as we have been accumulating prospects...Phase II should be developing the keepers and surrounding them with the best-fitting players (even if temporary placeholders) to confirm the vision makes sense. Phase III is going all-in to upgrade the placeholders with much better, but similar, versions for the long run. For example, a 3&D SG is the right guy to support Franz & Paolo - who have been identified as the core...Harris was an available, but limited version...the next version should be a 20ppg guy in, basically, the same role. Until they can identify that guy (internally or externally-Suggs, Jett, Vassell?), they roll with Harris or similar placeholder. But, in the next week, or year, or two years, expect a BIG step to upgrade that spot - assuming Black is the long-term solution to the spot that Fultz is keeping warm. If Black is not what Weltman hopes...we take a temporary step back and re-evaluate.
I look for moving out some young guys that don't project to be around for the big push. Fultz due to limitations, Cole (possibly-I hope not) due to contract and role demands, maybe even WCJ if his defensive presence doesn't grow (his versatility is a bonus-but not the key to his role), Isaac due to inability to stay healthy, etc. I expect more vets in supporting roles to aid in winning but, mostly, teaching by example and supporting on-court with making smart plays. If those roles can be taken by young guys with more upside, rather than vet placeholders, all the better. One big move-that may not be as soon as I'd like

Re: The Guards
You don't spend two lottery picks on potential rising star guards and not clear a path for them to rise. The front office is mad signaling their direction I think.
Edit: Another point, I think people are overplaying the win-now focus that the front office seemingly has. By using both lottery picks they are absolutely signaling that they are focused on development still.

If I remember correctly, even with our guards out, RJ was not getting minutes. We opted to play Banchero and Wagner as point forwards. But it cannot be denied though, Fultz ability to pass and give the ball the guys at their spots helped the team tremendously. And I'm not going to take that away from him because we believe another guard can do the job, when no other guard did. Cole nor Suggs was doing that and RJ didn't really get the minutes.

Re: The Guards
I didn’t know who to respond to in the last 3 pages, so I’m responding to no one in particular.
I’m not entirely sure how anyone looks at the guard rotation, after using another very high lottery pick on another point guard, and doesn’t come away with the idea that one of them needs to be moved. This is just the nature of how roster management works in the nba. At this point it’s not if it’s going to happen, it’s when.
It would be catastrophic for them to resign Fultz at this juncture. Period. Even if I put my bias of him aside for 5 seconds it’s apparent that he has to be moved. It’s a skill set issue more than a position issue. You cannot tie up large amounts of cap space into a point guard with similar skillsets, lower ceiling, and larger deficiencies. They cannot share the floor.
The argument can be made, and will be, that they need to “let it all play out”. No, they need to make decisions. That’s exactly how you start causing issues between young players that cannot accept their roles and making assets more difficult to move in the immediate future - more on that later.
Cole Anthony believes he’s a starting point guard. He’s not going to be cool being not only the backup point guard, but also splitting his backup minutes with Anthony Black. Cole improved last season. I also don’t think he’s going to command a crazy expensive contract because of the position he’s been given.
It’s already difficult to move Fultz now. You can look around the league and see there aren’t many situations where teams need a fringe starting point as expensive as he is currently. With a more expensive longer deal? They might as well start attaching positive assets to move him. Why do that?
The fear as Knightro has explained throughout this thread is that they will do what they did with Bamba and Vucevic. Except this time their rookie will be good enough to play, but he’ll be buried behind two other guys. One of them in a contract year (sheesh) and the other trying to prove he’s actually worth of being the starter (yikes). I can’t actually think of a worse scenario for Anthony Black’s rookie year, which is why he made the comments he made pre-draft.
They shouldn’t do this for even 1 season.
Why? Because the results will be obvious. We did X amount better this season compared to Y season because Fultz is playing in a contract year as compared to Black learning the NBA game. Yeah, no $hit. Don’t even leave that door open to compare the two. Realize that you’ve spent arguably the last real shot at landing lottery talent in Black and you’ve already made a business decision. Live with the results instead of playing it both ways and shooting yourself in the foot cap-wise when it matters more than ever.
There isn’t an alternate theory on this that makes sense and I won’t be kind to those that think there is a universe where this dual strategy does.

But not now. Not after they just drafted his obvious replacement. Now they have to actually, you know, replace him.

Sigh...
Markelle Fultz missed the first 21 games of the season and came back on November 30th.
Cole Anthony missed game 1 and then missed games 6-21 for a total of 17 games missed. He also came back on November 30th.
Gary Harris missed 16 of the first 17 games of the season, came back and played 6 games, then missed another 11 games. He returned for good on December 23rd.
Wendell Carter missed 18 games between November 16th and December 21st. He returned for good on December 23rd.
Paolo Banchero missed 7 straight games from November 9th to November 25th.
Jalen Suggs missed 5 straight games from October 22nd to November 1st, then missed 19 consecutive games from November 27th to January 4th.
Moe Wagner missed the first 18 games of the season and returned for good on November 25.
So there you go. That's 7 of the 9 primary rotation players - the starting PG, starting SG, starting PF, starting C, backup PG, backup SG and backup C who combined to miss 132 games basically all around the same time frame of mid October to mid December.
I get that Fultz is a popular guy around here, but to pin the team's improvement on him alone when basically the entire rotation got healthy by mid December heading into January, February and March is just goofy to me.
MPG in October/November (Magic went 5-17)
Bol Bol 27.1 MPG (finished the season out of the rotation)
Terrence Ross 24.7 MPG (traded away in February)
Chuma Okeke 21.8 MPG (finished the season out of the rotation)
Mo Bamba 18.7 MPG (traded away in February)
Caleb Houstan 18.4 MPG (finished the season out of the rotation)
RJ Hampton 16.4 MPG (released in February)
Kevon Harris 12.4 MPG (finished the season out of the rotation)
Admiral Schofield 11.2 MPG (finished the season out of the rotation)

we had games where we had zero PGs. other games where we had zero SGs. Others where we had no center.

Weltman interview before the draft. He said the are keying on "giving each player a pathway to success and to growing to his potential here".
What i can add about Fultz is that this year we would have to trade him or unguarantee his contract while next year they just could tell they didnt agree about the contract. Much easier.
For what its worth i think Weltman is not that high on Fultz and draft just showed that. You look at acts.
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

No worries. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and it's all good
