Re: Hopefully Ausar isn’t Stanley Johnson
This tells me you don’t know Stanley Johnson’s personality/character.
If you want to know the kind of guy Stanley was, search up what he was saying about Lebron in the Playoffs and how he got demolished. That’s POOR character. This isn’t the type of player Weaver and Monty will ever have on the team. Stanley Johnson had a POOR attitude. He didn’t want to do drills and work on his skills. He wanted to play full court competitive basketball. Also SVG used him wrong, he stuck him in the corner which also stunted his growth. The truth is Stanley was a grounded athlete, he didn’t jump high at all, he played bully ball in college. He also didn’t have the parent or brother support that the twins do. It’s totally different situation.
In comparison athletically Thompson twins are high flyers. They’re GOOD kids. Their parents raised them military strict discipline style. They signed a contract while young that they have to do certain amount of shots, dribbling, etc every day. The beauty of it all is one twin compares to the other so there’s constant competition and comparison which is healthy. Stanley did none of that. He was a Football player not a basketball player. IMO Stanley should’ve played Football linebacker. He had no business coming to the NBA. He was more of a power forward. He couldnt dribble, shoot, couldn’t pass. Defense was grounded, he should’ve been at the post most likely. He has small hands.
It’s two TOTALLY different prospects. In no shape or form do they compare or have any resemblance.

To play devil’s advocate, didn’t the twins just take advantage of, or “play bully ball,” a league much lesser than that of NCAA ball??? Especially lesser than that of the Pac-10 or other Power 5 Conference competition??

Re: Hopefully Ausar isn’t Stanley Johnson
Stanley Johnson and Ansur are completely different players. Johnson had zero range and no ball handling skills. These issues were well written. It was a bad pick. Agree as well that Johnson didn’t have the ability to play above the rim like the Thompson twins. I agree that I never thought Johnson looked in sharp or engaged in the game.

That’s a fine argument. But OTE was never about playing on the court. It was about NBA level coaches, NBA physical therapists, NBA 3pt line, NBA training, trainers, etc. It was strictly about development and transitioning to the NBA, not about showcasing your skills. Although there is a component of that of course. Also you’re comparing athleticism here, no. Johnson was literally a TANK. These guys jump out of the gym. That’s different. They are immediately ahead of most players in the NBA. Those verticals are rare, see Shaedon Sharpe. These athletes simply thrive in the NBA because they’re that much faster and jump higher. Stanley on the other hand, he suffered because for the most part teams can body him and he wasn’t a threat to dribble, shoot, playmake, or even cut because he’s such an easy cover from up top. Ausar, you’re not jumping above him. Also, there’s the Cade factor. Ausar gonna have a very easy time getting buckets.

Re: Hopefully Ausar isn’t Stanley Johnson
I wasn’t a proponent of the Ausar pick, but comparing him to Stanley is superficial at best.
Only thing they have in common is size and supposed defensive ability. I’m not sure if Ausar is as bad a shooter as Stanley was.

He was talking like a child. “I’m in his head for sure.” Like you’re not man, you’re getting molested out there. In fact you probably caused the sweep yourself for talking so much. I’ve seen rookies talk like that all the time. Even veterans like Dillon Brooks. Basically similar type of talk. It was embarrassing and the wrong guy to go after. People wanted to see it as a competitive spirit but dude, make a jumpshot and be quiet.

Re: Hopefully Ausar isn’t Stanley Johnson
There's no real comparison here, Stanley and Ausar are two completely different style of players. The one similarity is that they both came into the league as questionable outside shooters, although I have more faith that Ausar can develop in that area.

I disagree on the point that Stanley was not a high character guy. He said dumb 19 year old things but by all accounts, he works hard. He was just not the athlete everyone thought he was and his jump shot was broken.

Isn't he still bouncing in and out of the league?

How does that equate to him having bad character or being the reason they got swept?Spider156 wrote:DetroitSho wrote:What exactly was it that he said about LeBron?Spider156 wrote:This tells me you don’t know Stanley Johnson’s personality/character.

Stanley Johnson vert jump was below average for a wing and jump shot mechanics were truly awful. His bully ball drives into the paint worked in college but not the NBA against bigger bodies.
Ausar is top-level athlete in the league right out of the gate and can get by people at ease.
Stanley also wasn't very coachable, and probably hung out with his boy Andre too much.

Re: Hopefully Ausar isn’t Stanley Johnson
We honestly were horrible at developing young talent from the late Dumars era into the SVG era. When you see a "leader" like Drummond get a max deal and be your "franchise player" it really doesn't elevate your play the same way it does when a guy like Khris Middleton gets to go to the Bucks and ends up seeing the work ethic and leadership a great player like Giannis has and I know that Khris ended up being better because he was beside Giannis than he would have been if he just stayed in Detroit with Drummond, Marcus Morris, KCP, etc.
Hopefully Monty ends up being big on getting the best out of his young core and helping them really develop in ways we've sometimes failed young players in the past.

Re: Hopefully Ausar isn’t Stanley Johnson
Stanley at 19 was a better FT and 3 point shooter than Ausar at 19, which isn't saying much. And much, much stronger. He was also described as a high character guy with high basketball IQ that just wins games and makes the right play. Potential point forward. But yeah, not even close to the same level athlete or style of play.
I do wonder if Stanley's path would've been different if his mom, the former AAU coach that turned him into an NBA prospect, hadn't died of cancer shortly after we drafted him. It'd be like Ivey's mom dying before his rookie season.
“But Karen was so much more than just Stanley’s mom. She coached, counseled and mentored so many kids in her SoCal Tigers youth program and loved those kids as if they were her own.
I remember once when NBA All-Star Weekend came to Los Angeles, her scrapping together gas money to drive several of those kids to the Staples Center in order for the kids to experience the NBA Expo open to the public. Karen was always quick to offer any kid that she came in contact with her great knowledge of the game.”

Cam whitmore plays more like Stanley Johnson. Ausar is a vastly superior athlete and ball handler.

I actually think Ausar's twin brother plays a bit like Justise Winslow.

A bit more information would help aad. If you mean in terms of impact overall, we might see eye-to-eye. I'm down on the pick, but in a player comp, the two are wildly different.

I remember some of the board being torn between Winslow and Stanley. The funny thing is they were both busts.
