Collins was at one point a freaky athletic 20 and 10 PF/C who could shoot the 3 and tries to contest at the rim. At worst, Jazz lose a 2nd they have a plethora of. Most likely they will try to build up his value then gain a 1st for him. At best, they might have gotten a very nice piece going forward. Risk is essentially zero.

I don't understand why Utah would accept that without a FRP attached. 78m in remaining salary for a guy who isn't going to help you win anything is a huge amount of money to throw away. I wonder if this is the first part of a 3way deal that sends some more stuff to Utah to cover the salary dump, if not, I think it's a bad trade for the Jazz.

Great for Utah honestly. They get him for free and try to salvage any value he could have, to flip him later. They have another year before thinking about contending, so no problem

Great value for the Jazz with an absolute steal. Even if he doesn’t pan out right away they have the time to be patient with him. Should be a fun team to watch. Hawks got off the contract but not a lot to show for it which sucks. Hard to see the direction when the team still needs more deals like this to cut cost. If not trying to win then is it time to trade Trae everyone else and restart?

Cause that wasn’t the market for him. Nobody was trading a first round pick for John Collins and his bloated contract. I’m sure the Hawks tried relentlessly and no teams were interested.

He becomes an expiring in a 2025 so it’s not as bad as you think. They could easily trade him in a couple years or who knows, maybe he has a resurgence in Utah like Lauri did and they wanna keep him around.

I'm kinda surprised that a team hasn't traded for Collins to use his as a small ball 5. The times that Atlanta tried it in the playoffs it looked pretty good because it gave them an offensive threat at the 5.

Probably hold onto it. There were reports that the Hawks FO was mandated by ownership to get below the luxury tax.
