which draftee will you be watching warily?

Post#1 » by Skybox » Wed Jun 28, 2023 1:03 pm

I'm settling in with our draft guys and I'm ok with it. Possibly more than OK, depending on other moves and decisions.

Who are the guys that you will be watching and thinking "What could have been?"

For me, Cason Wallace, Nick Smith, and Keyonte George...I wouldn't have had the guts to draft any of them but will one of them turn out to be the "Jamal Murray" type Lead Guard I desperately want to pair with Paolo & Franz?

Lively and Jarace Walker, to a lesser extent, as solid backups with potential to become a lot more, despite the roster blocks.

Wallace could be that classic Kentucky guy that goes wild in the NBA and everyone goes..."didn't see that coming" (again) :o

All of this comes from pick #11. Pick #6 I don’t think I’m too worried about that outcome.

Wallace - not sure where he fits in OKC minutes-wise

Bufkin - also not sure the minutes are available to him in Atlantas rotation.

Dick - He will have plenty of opportunity in Toronto after Trent. He was the obvious pick in terms of fit, need, and BPA. If he blows up the FO will look stupid.

Hawkins - same as Dick but to a lesser degree. Has less opportunity than Dick to showcase that though.

I mean basically anyone they had the opportunity to pick, but didn't, right?

It will certainly be interesting to compare Jett Howard long-term to Dick, Hawkins, Bufkin and George since they went 13, 14, 15 and 16 respectively.

For me it will be Ausar and Keyonte. Also Nick Smith Jr but only because I think he's a major bust and I'm curious if I'm right.

Honestly, I have already solidified in my head that there will probably better shooters than Jett picked after him so I am not worried about it. I'm just going to go ahead and root for him and continue to hope that he gets betters and that he works well with Franz and Paolo. The one thing that I will not do, nor do I do this anyway, I'm not going to bicker between OKC and Raptors fans. They can win this one.

I will be looking out for Taylor Hendricks, Kris Murray, Jace Walker, and Keynote George. But I am sure there are others that will catch my eye. I actually liked these past two draft classes. The players that have come out of the draft has been highly skilled.

I suppose there will be 18 teams watching Cam Whitmore to see if he's Jimmy Butler or Isaac Okoro

that's the one and honestly shocked to see his own HC at Nova heavily criticized him for not being a vocal leader in practice and other dumb areas. Have a feeling Whitmore will be a different player playing for an NBA HC vs the **** he got at Nova.
A scoring guard.. never heard of one.

I'll be interested to see how this draft shakes out compared to others.

I expect Jett Howard to be a role player. Which for 11th you "kinda" hope for a starter, but solid contributor is not seen as a bust.

Players I think that will be "better" picked after him.

Let's just say "a lot" as I expect this guard heavy draft to have a lot of boons in the teens because Ausar + Amen deflated the rest of the draft.

Wallace was my guy but I don’t think I’d have had the balls to take him at 6 or negotiate a trade back for him, so I would’ve gone with Black anyway. It was the same with Giddey, who was my fav guy but when the Magic were on the board at #5 and Suggs was there, again, I wouldn’t have had the balls to take Giddey over Suggs.

Then with the Jett pick, I was looking for the Maxey/Booker type pick that slides but becomes a breakout scorer still. Podzilla and JHS were my top prospects in that regard, but then Tre Mann, Ayo Dosunmu, Maxey and NAW have been my guys in that range previously and they haven’t broken out apart from Maxey, so not confident I’m picking the winners in that range.

I see this sentiment every season. My recommendation is to stop leaning into your sports anxieties, especially if they tend to spill out into the forum.

I know it's hard to resist comparisons and jealousy -- I do it too -- but wondering "what could have been" seems like another level of hopeless anxiety.

Cam, George, Dick, and Hawkins at 11. I’m fine with Jett being the pick but, based on what fans have access to, I would have likely gone with Cam at 11. George, Dick, and Hawkins would have also made sense at 11.

Feel free to skip this if it upsets you to see how anxiety-ridden we all appear to be

Dick, since he was available at 11.
Keyontae Johnson, was going to be a lotto pick before his condition, came back and fell into the 2nd round. Thought he played very well for missing 2 years

I'll be curious to see how Cason, Black, and Scoot compare to each other.

I know a lot of people here like Hendricks, so I'll be watching to see how he does.
