Interesting tidbit from Dane on the new 2nd round pick exception in the new CBA:

Basically, you can offer a 3 year deal starting at the salary of a 1 year vet (1.80 million).
or a 4 year deal starting at the salary of a 2 year vet (2.02 million this year).

The final year must be a team option.

They are basically creating a separate exception for what teams have been doing using the MLE (We did this with Minott last year).

I would be curious to see if they made changes to the restricted free agent rules and a player would be a RFA after the 4th year of a non-1st round pick rookie scale instead of unrestricted like in the old CBA (the situation we landed in with Naz, and the Nuggets avoided several years ago with Jokic by declining his option to make him a restricted free agent so they could max him rather than risk losing him the following year as an unrestricted free agent). This would make those 4 year Hinkie specials more attractive.

So don't pencil in Miller at 1.1 million I would guess.

I like that the players association agreed to this, it gives the young guys at the bottom of the food chain a little more to eat.

I'm also curious if this applies to undrafted free agents? Probably not?

Good stuff. I knew this existed in the new CBA, but I hadn’t stopped to look at how it works.

To me, if you trust your ability to draft in the second round (not always an easy thing), it’s almost always better to lock your guys up. While it makes us tighter to the lux this year, in general the upfront costs are small. You’re only paying $1 mil more up front, and the exception is just equal to the vet min deal you probably would have paid anyway. But the potential payout is huge in Year’s 3 and 4. Not every player is going to turn out to be Naz Reid, but if they do, having team control, cheap is a very valuable thing when you put together your team’s payroll.

As long DDV fan, I see absolutely no reason, why NAW cant be for us same role player.

However, spending more than the taxpayer MLE (5 million) also hardcaps us, where we can't surpassed the 1st apron during the season

Also, Dane has alluded to some murky language in the new CBA where you only get all your 2 ways if you have filled your 15 roster spots.
If that's true, running 13 or 14 roster spots isn't going to be as attractive, as teams have done in the past to skirt the tax.

I was about to ask if anyone has seen/understands that.

I think everyone is learning new things about the new CBA every day, but this is what I have read so far pertaining to 2-ways, less than 15 roster spots....

- A team can only have LESS THAN 14 PLAYERS for 28 days during the regular season (and no more than 14 straight days)

- No team with under 15 players can have two-way player(s) "active" for more than 90 total games during the regular season.

Jevon Carter would be nice if we miss out on Brown. Very similar players, Browns just bigger and a bit more established but Carter could be a better bargain.

To me Prince missed to many games and was a negative on the floor in the playoffs. I’d rather try someone new.

Agreed. For a veteran he made a ton of bone headed plays. He was a solid team defender, streaky solid shooter, and good in the locker room but I don't think he'll be missed a ton. Slomo is better, McDaniels is better, Edwards is better, and we have Minott, Moore, Miller and potentially Naw/ another free agent there to play his spot.

Is he gonna get vet min? I can’t see many teams giving him much more. TBH he’s an improvement over Nowell.

He also drafted him. I'm sure Beasley would come back if the price is right, but he's not a ballhandler, so I can't see Minnesota offering him much at all.

I'm curious what Beasley will get on the open market. Shooters tend to get paid. I bet we are surprised at what he gets.
