My absolutely uninformed opinion is they did it as a favor to Obi.
They realized they kind of screwed him over the past few years, really limiting his future earnings, so they found a place that was a good fit. It also kind of explains signing his brother - to smooth it over a bit with the family.
And it wasn't like they were going to get another lottery pick in return after Thibs just ground his value into nothingness. So my complete guess is both parties agreed if a suitable team offered a decent value in return, a move would be made.
Keep in mind the players are human beings, and good organizations need to be sensitive to the people part of the business - if they keep screwing players over they are going to have a hard time attracting quality free agents, negotiating with their current players or being a desired destination for those demanding a trade. And Obi has been a good soldier, always great with the media, a crowd favorite, and always putting a positive face on the franchise; you can't do someone like that raw.
