Can we credit the Nets front office for their handling of Durant last year as a tipping point?

“What I prefer? Well what I prefer is you let me go to the heat for scrubs. I’ll win a championship and come back to the city and do my own parade. Raising the trophy high for the great city of Portland to see what it’s like to be a winner. Then I’ll come back and finish what I started. Constantly getting bounced in the playoffs and you’ll retire my number.”

I think Portland could end up with a traditional star trade return

Sorry I have a memory of a fish. What did they do again? How did they handle KD’s initial trade demand? Kindly refresh my memory.

Stevens didn't want to offer much more than Jaylen Brown for KD earlier this season for two reasons. Didn't want to outbid other teams (although in the end that's exactly what the Suns did by a wide margin  ) and also KD is in the category of harden and kyrie, in which you don't want to send a bunch of assets to find out six months later he wants to leave.
Dame is like KG, loyal to a fault. Packaging real assets makes sense in this case.
Lastly, Ainge valued shotmakers (especially in the last couple minutes of a tight game), hence Isaiah Thomas, Kyrie, etc. Stevens seemingly went with a different route with Smart, but I can't imagine Ainge's thinking didn't influence Stevens.
Lillard is as big a shotmaker as there is in the league. You're gonna need that to win a championship. Suns got that with KD and Nuggets got that with Jokic. Tatum is getting closer but not there yet and may never get there.

Yeah...remember the Anthony Davis trade when the Pelicans claimed because of tampering there was no way they were sending Davis to LA. What happened? Basically Rich Paul and LeBron told the Pelicans what was up. And the Pelicans complied.

Remember when Kawhi said he wouldn't show up unless he was traded to the Lakers? Dame doesn't have the Lebron influence. Portland literally could not care less what Dame wants.

He had said LA. Or at least Uncle Dennis said LA. He still left the Raptors to go to LA a year later. Worked for the Raps since they won a title.
