Definitely doesn't. We can't trade him unless he approves and his salary is so low we'll have to get other pieces involved to get an impact player. Otherwise he walks next year for nothing in return.

He is likely to significant outperform that salary allocation for this season. That's what I was referring to.

One year prove it deal, we hold bird rights. Or work with him mid season on a trade somewhere.

Obviously no other teams were interested in paying him either.

A short term deal seems best for everyone's interests.

I expected some measure of realism and good faith from him and his agent after missing an entire season +10 games due to being a complete ****.

I didn't expect a huge discount, but reality states his market didn't exist so it would've been nice for him to sign a multi year deal as a way of saying "thank you for drafting me, giving me the opportunity to shine and play with Melo, and sticking by me when I embarrassed myself, the organization, and the city"

Instead, he continues to show a total lack of self awareness or humility and signed a QO removing any leverage the team has.

**** that guy. I legitimately hope they boo him every time he steps on the floor.

I hope Miller balls out and sits Bridges' punk ass on the bench

If you thought he was going to sign a cheap long term deal as a way of saying thanks to our franchise, that was always incredibly unrealistic.

He got a signal about his value from the market and its apparent that he has some work to do to salvage it. I think it makes total sense for him to do a short term deal, and I don't think he's some terrible guy because he's exercising a very logical option for him.

Problem is if he balls out why we he return if we wasn't giving him the money he thought he was worth?

We will see how it goes, but I would be shocked if he comes back if the team doesn't have major success. Melo is probably the only reason he returns if so.

Nobody said cheap.

"Realistic"

And he's a terrible guy because he beat his girlfriend, him being an **** about contract negotiations is just an extension.

Lol this is a disaster for us other than being a slight value rental for one minescule year, in which we should be benching him anyway on principal that he screwed us over so we should reciprocate.

That's not even taking into account how bad he f*cked us last year and the PR disaster.

The real disaster would have been if he pulled a Simmons and said I won't play.

His skill set is a perfect fit for this team, we will be much better off having him here.

I wonder how "far apart" it was.

Was he wanting a max? 30? 20?

Seriously dude. You could make an argument that Hitler wasn't such a bad guy. Are you a defense lawyer by trade?

No, I'm a business lawyer and I know a thing or two about contract negotiation and leverage. If I were advising Miles on his options this off season this is probably what I would have told him made the most sense. Doesn't cut off any long term options and let's him build value and credibility so he can hit FA with some stink worn off.

My outrage comes from the assumption that with this decision Miles is outta here

playing for himself this year

then outta here

heading for brighter, Klutchier, lights

…is that an unfair assumption, given the Hornets retain his Bird rights?

Kinda fine with it tbh.

Ensures that we're the only team that can hold his Bird Rights. If he returns to form, those 8% raises will look real enticing vs. the open market. Also gives us a year to see how he fits with the young core.

Also interesting to me: retaining Miles and also potentially having significant capspace (should PJ deflect) was not a scenario I foresaw this offseason.

Miles has all incentive in the world to kick ass next season. His career literally depends on it.

Have to agree with Yosemiteben, in that Bridges was likely facing a lot of restrictions, morals clauses, and a major haircut from our side for a longer term contract. The Hornets SHOULD and apparently DID go that route to protect the franchise in case this idiot can’t control himself again. However, when you limit the risk and you also limit the reward. For Miles it’s all on him to regain respect and trust, to perform for his next contract, and earn what he is losing by not signing a longer deal.

Unfortunately no one knows what position he may take if he IS successful this season. Will he value his return and his players enough to sign his best possible contract with us? Or will he demand a sign and trade?

I’d love to know if we have any options available to trade him now for a player on his rookie contract? How much does Eason make? Or better yet a reserve PG we could count on. We could include a couple of second round picks…heck Mitch must have a kettle full.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

Miles seems to be on board to some degree and happy to be back with the team, so that is a good start.
