Would the Nets do that? If you are the Nets and stuck with Simmons' contract what would you do? I welcome a better free throw shooter for sure.
I think it kind of depends on a couple of different things. First for the wolves, do you think Kat is better at center? If yes then we can gobert makes sense. Why Simmons? Well he can't shoot, neither can Rudy, so you aren't losing anything there. He isn't the defensive stopper in the paint that Rudy is, so you are losing there. However, he is an excellent creator, perimeter defender, and somebody who can initiate the offense. I almost look at him as Kyle Anderson without the shot but more physically gifted. So the biggest gamble is are you getting a healthy Simmons. If Simmons is healthy, and can give you 25 to 30 minutes a game, I know considering his contract that seems like a bad thing, but it allows you more of a rotation with Anderson and Reed and Towns. Simmons's contract is also one year shorter and about 4 million per year less expensive. With Edwards, McDaniel's, and towns is contracts about to hit the books, that one year shorter and $4 million could make a big difference. Finally, if next year is the year we look to move towns, how much additional value does Simmons 40 million expiring have? I'm not a big cap guy so I don't know if expiring's carry the same amount of weight as they used to.
Ultimately, I wouldn't make the trade. It just seemed like an interesting conversation piece. If you could tell me that Simmons would stay healthy the entire year, I would probably make that deal in a second. However, I just don't think that's realistic.
