Sign him, make the Celtics match, and then see what they do with maxing out Jaylen Brown? It's the super duper extra special max so maybe that puts them in a tough spot.
If we sign Grant Williams, we all of a sudden have several capable, if low end, starting quality players, plus some decent rotation guys like Deni an Kispert.
If Grant Williams had value on a new, expensive contract, then other teams would be stepping up to sign him to one.
Grant Williams has absolutely no offensive game except catch-and-shoot 3's. That's useful on a team with enough stars to draw defensive attention, but it's not very useful on a team like ours that will struggle to score. He is the wrong player for us.
He would make a ton of sense in Dallas.
Did you post this before the deal was announced?
Yes. I had no idea the deal was in the works.

Re: Official 2023 Wizards OFFSEASON Thread
Dallas apparently giving up an unprotected pick swap in 2030 to the Spurs in order to do the sign and trade for Williams. I would have gladly had him, even if our garbage team would have made him look more garbage, if only to try and trade him later. Would not have traded a first round pick for him though. Celtics only got a couple of 2nds for him though.
It's pretty bold to do a pick swap with a team that will have a, by then, year 6 veteran Wembanyama. Dallas going all in on trying to keep Doncic. We should trade them some of our vets that are just taking up space on the roster.

Can't say I do. Who else gonna shoot?

If Luka leaves then this is going to be one of the worst trades of all time. Imagine a Luka-less Dallas bottoming out in 2030 then gifting a top 3 pick to the Spurs who will likely be already title contenders by then (at the end of the day, these are the San Antonio Spurs, and they have yet another superstar big to build around)

Yeah, it's real interesting that he only wants an assistant job. I actually like that better than him being a head coach. I'm sure Van Gundy has plenty of wisdom to impart, but I'm not sure if he has the ambition and drive to be a full time head coach anymore after so many years living the easy life as a studio analyst. So if he wants to be a mentor to a younger coach, that would be great.

If JVG had any interest in an "assistant job", I guarantee he realizes that WUJ is dead man walking for this season. It's a pretty good spot if he wants a head coaching job in the near future. Or he's just biding his time before he gets another big broadcasting gig. He's also 61 so time is running to become a head coach. His last HC job was at Houston in 2007.

If JVG wanted to be head coach, he'd let it be known he wanted to be head coach and would start interviewing for head coach positions. I think his stated intention to be assistant coach is sincere. I don't think he wants the workload of a head coach.
I wonder if his interest in Washington has anything to do with a relationship with WUJ. Does JVG know Wes from Denver? Or maybe JVG has a good relationship with Michael Winger.

Who knows what his intentions are? WUJ is probably not going to survive the rebuild because Winger didn't hire him. We're just guessing on a message board, but I still find it hard to believe that he wants to be an assistant coach until he retires.

I kinda feel like bringing in JVG is classic "let's bring an adult into the room in case current coach flames out and we can bump him up."
I'm also concerned about JVG's style, dude was perfect for that 90s/early 2000s basketball.

He's been watching tons of basketball, and coaches the national team. I think he gets it. Plus, his time in Houston seemed to indicate that he's willing to adapt his offense without sacrificing his defense. Battier, TMac, and Skip to My Lou were bombing 3's in the early 2000's.

Nothing against Van Grundy but, personally, I’d like to see the Zards higher a younger assistant who’s ready to grind with the youngins and earn his stripes…a la Willie Green and Adrian Griffith.
Or a Phil Handy who is renown for connecting with and developing players.

Re: Official 2023 Wizards OFFSEASON Thread
This is more for 2024, but with Murray signing the extension, 2024 free agency is looking pretty bad. That class is probably going to be headlined by Pascal Siakam and James Harden. I mean you got big names like Klay but he'll be 35. Demar will be a free agent but he'll entering his age-36 season next season.
The 2025 class is looking historic plus the possibility of Cooper Flagg re-classifying for that draft so it wouldn't shock me if Dawkins/Winger give guys like Jones and Wright an extension, possibly a 1+1 type of deal. We have to get to the floor anyway but it's just something to keep in mind over the next year or so. We'll draft a guy and probably keep our powder dry for 2024 free agency.

Yes, the point guard situation is a dubious one. Hopefully they can get Jones under contract sooner rather than later.
I was wondering if Poole could play PG full time but I don't think so.

Tyus Jones will command a big raise. Why do we want to keep him?
We are engaged in a ground up rebuild. We did keep Kuz -- for reasons that have little to do with his productivity (even if he were extremely productive on the court that wouldn't be why we'd keep him).
Tyus is really good. I would imagine that he'd command a good return at the deadline. Let's trade him for as much draft capital as we can get.
Meanwhile, I'd love for us to sign Kennedy Chandler this off season.

The suns just traded Isaiah Todd for 3 second round picks. Wtf. Maybe the first round swaps are in Memphis’ favor. So maybe it really isn’t that big of a deal, but the general consensus was that Todd was pretty much worthless, so I am confused by how much the suns got in return.
Viva le tank! At this pace, it will never end.

He’s a backup PG that will be available for the MLE in the offseason. At best, we get a couple 2nd round picks in return at the deadline.

Yeah, I didn't understand the trade at all. There must be something that we're missing.

If he will only cost the MLE, then he definitely won't be worth two 2RPs. I think he will cost more than the MLE though, which means over-the-cap teams have an incentive to trade for him.
PIF is correct though. We should ultimately trade him. That said, I don't think there's a huge market for him at the moment. I think the return will be better at the Trade Deadline. It just takes one contending team to have an injury at PG. Also, I think having a vet PG will be useful in the development of some of the other guys. I don't want a Houston Rockets situation where there are no adults in the room.
