Richaun Holmes waived his trade kicker to give DAL extra 1.8 mils to offer

So, DAL ate Holmes salary to get Olivier Maxence Prosper in the draft, they followed to sign long tenured Dwight Powell who is very similar player to him, still, he waived his trade kicker of ~2M just to give DAL the option to sign someone else, a team he owes nothing...
This current contract is his only big contract, he's not some max contract earner, I find this really classy and I appreciated a lot as Mavs fan.

I'm sure he'll get the difference back under the table. Like you said, he had no reason to do Dallas a solid.

Played himself if he's not getting something out of it that was unofficially agreed to.

Watching the Mavs squander the discounts Dirk kept giving them should be a cautionary lesson to any player to doing financial favors for your team

Holmes is a solid guy. Dallas is luckily to have him on the team. Some Mavs fans around here just don’t know it yet.

yeah no, he's not expecting Dallas to illegally pay him $1.8M under the table. He agreed because he knows he has no role in Sacramento and just sitting on their bench for two more years means he will be a min contract guy at best coming off that. He's hoping for a chance to play in Dallas to rebuild some value so he can sign a contract and make that $1.8M back.

This is just about his belief in himself.

Maybe Dallas told him they are not trading him and he can increase his value thanks to playing next to Luka and Kyrie. Better than rotting in Sacramento and then signing for a Vet Min deal in 2025.

He’s going to get PT in Dallas, if he performs his next contract will be good. Otherwise he is riding bench on SAC and then that deflates his earning potential for next contract. Makes sense for both sides

He did it so they could up the offer to Thybulle, which ultimately got matched. Mavs have play money now and no one left to spend it on except spare parts like Stanley Johnson or Nerlens Noel.

Good gesture, but ultimately he probably shouldve just taken the money since there isnt anyone left worth 11 million except PJ Washington who is worth much more.

Pretty much this. He is undersized for the 5 and brings no shot blocking or much of an offensive game, but he is an upgrade to Dwight Powell who was unplayable last season. Holmes is a decent rebounder and wont get pushed around in the post like Powell does. I still hope the Mavs can flip Hardaway for an upgrade at Center. Capela would be perfect for this team. Mavs should approach Atlanta again.

Charlotte will match for PJ. There is nobody left via the free agent market to sign. Gonna have to go the trade route. I wouldnt waste a roster spot on Noel or Stanley Johnson.

Can they do that? Sounds like extortion

My guess is they either promised him the starting spot and/or a certain amount of minutes. We started last season with JaVale McGee as the starter because of a similar promise to get him to sign.

Not a disaster in this case, he almost completely fell out of the rotation in Sacramento after they added Sabonis but looking at his per 36 minutes he's still clearly better than Powell at rebounding and shot blocking (not a high bar admittedly).

He wouldn't have gotten it if he was still in SAC, and doesn't have to pay state taxes. Better situation, better pay, better opportunity to increase his value.

I think trade kickers get waived fairly often

Who or what did the Kings get for this trade?

Was this basically a salary dump for Sacramento?

Actually that doesn't start until the following NBA caliber year.
