Such a good use of $10.5 million of cap space as the Spurs are likely good with prime VW in 7 years and who knows where Dallas will be at that point. Unprotected pick in a draft far enough down the road it could have a generational talent who knows.
Wish we did something like this instead of using $20 million on Harris to get two seconds.
They got a pick swap, not a pick …. If Dallas finishes ahead of the Spurs 7 years from now, the Spurs get nothing.
Weaver also gave Washington a 2nd while doing them a favor and eating Morris' $10 mil in salary.
Detroit eats $30 mil in salary and nets a single distant 2nd round pick. Spurs eat $10 mil in salary and net a distant UNPROTECTED 1st rounder.
Hmmm, I wonder who is doing a better job getting value by using their cap space and not signing free agents.

You do realize owning a pick swap option is still considered holding the rights to a pick right? Its also an attractive asset that can be used in other trades.

It’s not the same thing as actually adding a first rounder, though. It’s pretty far from it in fact.

Its not far from it all. Its pretty simple, Spurs own the right to take that pick if they choose to do so.
In fact I'd argue It would be much more preferrable to own the rights to an unprotected pick swap option than own the rights to a heavily protected 1st rounder (such as the type that Detroit owes the Knicks.)

It’s also more valuable than some random second round pick or two, in my opinion.

For sure the right to unprotected pick swap 7 years down the road could be pretty awesome. Who knows where either team will be at that point, but the fact there is zero protection on the swap it what makes it appealing. I wouldn't be surprised if VW and the Spurs were near the top of the league at that points as they've been doing a good job of building assets in their rebuild. Probably got the Hawks to overpay for Murray. Have gotten multiple decent extra first round picks from the Raptors the last two years as well.

Dwane Casey, the 2018 NBA Coach of the Year, credited Serbian basketball – and Serbian coaches in particular – as pioneers when it comes to training, practices and game preparation. “I would say that Serbian coaches were the first to use physical training, weight training, and today every team in the NBA does it,” Casey. who last coached the Detroit Pistons, said to Basketball Sphere. “It started at Partizan. They paid attention to measurements of body weight and body fat percentage. They used different types of training. That’s what I noticed in the Serbian coaching culture.”

Hmm... word being mentioned in the Dame trade threads that Detroit is being mentioned as a possibility of being involved as a 4th team along with Brooklyn, Miami, and Portland....
Complete speculation at this point but interesting?

I read either us or Brooklyn as a third team.
It would likely involve us taking on Herro or Duncan Robinson, neither of whom make any sense for us from basketball fit or flexibility standpoint.
I’d want draft capital to take on either one and there won’t be much to spare in that deal. They may even expect someone to contribute draft capital to the deal.
Screams “stay away” to me.

I actually think Herro is pretty talented but the guy makes no sense on this roster. I guess if we got rid of Bojan and Burks it could work but idk.

He might have slight positive value to the right team. We’re not that team.
It doesn’t make any sense with with direction Weaver has gone in this offseason either.

What if we only had to give up Bagley, Burks, and Hayes(all going to Portland) and we got Herro and some 2nd rounders?

Why would Portland want to do that?

Portland has made is pretty clear they absolutely don't want to take back Herro's salary/contract in a deal and Miami would have to find a third team to take him.
I could see them having some interest in Wiseman and Hayes if they're going full rebuild. Honestly though they probably wouldn't want to take on Bagley's salary either but the reality is Bagley has just one more year after this and Herro gets paid a ton for a while.
Portland already has Scoot, Sharpe, and Simons at the guard spots they have zero want/desire for Herro. Honestly they'd probably prefer a third team with cap space to just take Herro for nothing so they can just get back Lowry's expiring, Jovic, and all the picks and pick swaps that Miami owns.
Things we know from reports:
1. Portland wants expirings, young talent, and picks.
2. Portland doesn't want Herro and Miami needs to find a 3rd team to take him.
3. Ideally, Portland would also like to move off of Nurkic's contract ($16.9, $18.1, $19.4) when they trade Dame.
4. After matching the offer sheet for Thybulle, Portland is right up to the luxury tax line without much wiggle room so they'll almost certainly not want to take on more salary than they send out in a deal for 2023/24.
------
Portland Trades: Dame($45.6) + Nurkic($16.9)
Portland Receives: Wiseman($12.5), Robinson ($18.1), Lowry($29.7), + plus every pick from Miami
Miami Trades: Lowry($29.7), Herro($27.0), Robinson($18.1) + every pick and swap they can
Miami Receives: Dame($45.6) + Bagley ($12.1) + Hayes (7.4)
Detroit Trades: Wiseman($12.5), Bagley($12.1), Hayes ($7.4)
Detroit Receives: Herro($27.0) + Nurkic ($16.9)
This trade works in the trade checker. We get rid of 3 borderline rotation players and get two good rotation players, but guys that have a lot more $$$ owed to them it removes much of our future cap flexibility. We'd be pushing for a playoff spot with this rotation but I'm not sure that Weaver wants to give up being players in FA next summer.
C: Duren / Nurk
PF: Stew / Bojan / Livers
SF: Herro / Harris / Ausar
SG: Ivey / Burks / Sasser
PG: Cade / Morris
Young starters and the vet bench.... That said, I'd probably want some picks coming our way for taking on Nurk's contract.

Re: Around the League
It would be such a talent over fit move for us to get Herro. Not saying he’s on par with him, but if we didn’t have Ivey I could see it. I’d be more interested in turning say Harris/Bagley into Lowry/some random cast off (Little* and maybe picks, for example).
*would have like 4 years on his contract, but it’s fairly cheap. Good skillet for our needs, but can’t seem to stay healthy. It’s not ideal, but just an example. I’d rather have him and his contract over Bagley and his.

Re: Around the League
That offer sounds a bit more reasonable (they have no need for Burks and Wiseman is theoretically a positive asset for a rebuilding team and moving on from Nurkic offers value to them)
I guess I could see it for us from a pure talent upgrade perspective, and we "win" that trade on paper, though the fit isn't ideal

Monty isn't the best coach in the league. Him getting that contract was great financial news for high end coaches around the league.
