Dis he specifically say Brogdon in the starting 5 or did he mean closing games (they could be the best statistical unit).

Starting 5

Basically every statistic shows that the Celtics were at their best when brown/Tatum/Brogdan and white all shared the floor. People can cite some eye test bs, but that the stats don't lie.

Ah, no. That foursome came in at +3.3/36, far down on page 7 in rank of the 14 pages of 4-man combos used last year. Used in just 76 minutes spread over 24 games.

In any case looking at on/off or +/- of specific 5 man lineup isn't all that illuminating due to small sample size noise. Our most used lineup, Smart-White-Jaylen-Tatum-Horford, was used for only 909 minutes. The second most was only 359 minutes.

Smart is a below average offensive player, and in many cases his decision making offensively was detrimental. His ability to defend one on one and his communication defensively is what kept him on the court. By the end of last season it was pretty clear that Derrick White was a better defensive player than Smart. I think what you gain in Porzingis far outweighs what you lose in Smart.
As far as the starting lineup although i think the Celtics are at their best with Tatum at the 4, i think they will want Brogdon coming off the bench so a backcourt of White and Brown, then hopefully Horford will be willing to come off the bench which he hasnt done at
all in his career with the exception of 4 games in 2007 (his rookie year) and they can have Tatum/Porzingis/Rob up front. Essentially Horford takes over the Grant role off the bench along with Brogdon,Houser, and Pritchard.

Mr. "I'm an Elite Shooter" has more ego than people realize. Last year he outright said it made a difference to him and he wanted to start rather than come off the bench. So I think Joe should get it out of the way at the start of the season and slot him into the 3rd big role.
