I’d lay money on us to come out of that group.

Because they are in group with team who's starting 5:
PG: Brogdon
SG: White
SF: Brown
PF: Tatum
C: Porzingis

6th man Horford
7th man Robert Williams
8th man Hauser

Theye are on most early projections projected to win 55+ games and win East.

:dontknow: is $40 ins't some investment so it's not bad idea, but i'm anti-gambling

Why have the "Adam Silver Cup". That's the easiest question to ever have answered: Money.

More simply put, Mr. Silver has explicitly stated that this in-season tourney only works if advertisers get behind it. That is: it is a financial gimmick to make the owners even more money.

Someone explain, what is the purpose of the in season tournament? Is this new? It has to be right? Does it count towards the 81 game season?

Tournament Structure

1. Group Play (Nov. 3 - Nov. 28): Teams are randomly grouped into sets of five within their respective conferences, based on last season's records. Each team will play four games against each of the other four teams in its group (two at home, two on the road). These games will occur on special "Tournament Nights."

2. Knockout Rounds (starting Dec. 4): The team with the best record in each group, along with two "wild card" teams (the team with the best record that finished second in its group from each conference), will advance to the Knockout Rounds. These will consist of single-elimination games, culminating in the Championship game.

All 67 tournament games will count toward regular-season standings except the Championship. Even with the tournament games, the total regular-season games played will remain at 82.

Group Assignment

Groups were created via a random draw, with teams placed into "pots" based on their 2022-23 records. Teams were then randomly selected from these pots to form three groups per conference.

Tiebreaker Rules

In case of ties, the NBA will use the following sequential tiebreakers: Head-to-head record in Group Play, point differential, total points scored, 2022-23 regular season record, and a random draw if needed.

Prizing and Honors

There will be a dedicated prize pool for teams making it to the Knockout Rounds, with prizes increasing the further a team advances. At the end of the tournament, an MVP and an All-Tournament Team will be named based on performances in both Group Play and the Knockout Rounds.

I need to know what the prizes are. Unless it's something really significant for the postseason, I don't care about winning it, especially since the championship game doesn't count toward standings. That's just another mini all-star game where the players try to avoid getting hurt.

I think you nailed a key KPI for sure, incremental advertising spend earned.

I also think it fails if in-season tournament outcomes fail to correlate with play-off outcomes. I'll be watching to see if the in-season tournament final four looks similar to the playoff's final four. If outcomes from the in-season tournament don't have any predictive power for the playoffs then I think it'll be clear it is a meaningless exercise that teams aren't taking seriously.

This seems so overly pointless and will mean literally nothing to anyone. Not the fans, not the players (unless the prize is SUBSTANCIAL) and even the media will realize how pointless this is and stop hyping it after 1 year

Yeah, there are no legitimate stakes in this tournament for teams/fans to get excited about. Like, if the winning teams from each conference received a wild-card play-in guarantee or 2nd chance it could be interesting.

Or if they used the tournament nights to test out potential new rules. Ie, a 4 point shot and other ‘fun’ things like that.

Anything can be pointless if you go into it thinking its pointless lol.

Playins got the same heat. Pitch clock in baseball got criticized. Lot of examples of people complaining about things but hating when change is implemented.

It may work, may not. Couldn't hurt.

I am just trying to see the "why" at the moment.

"To make the season more meaningful?"

Now if we are saying this tournament is replacing the all-star game then maybe we are on to something but I doubt it will. All-star is just beyond broken at this point unfortunately.

I agree. This seems like a good idea to me. It adds intrigue and motivation. Maybe in 10 years players won't care about it anymore, but they definitely will like it and want to win it initially.

Question: why could you win the in-season tourney but not the title?

Do the games that the teams play in the mid-season tournament, do they still count towards their regular season record? Because if they don't then teams are going to tank it.

It will be like a mid-season Summer league.

This trade wasn't some conspiracy - it was just a GM wanting AD bad enough where in most people's eyes he overpaid by a long shot to get him.

To sell t shirts that say champions in huge font and "in mid-season tournament" in tiny font.

I'm really curious to see how in-season tournament performance impacts championship odds.
