I missed this from the other day. It really looks like he’s going to have to relearn a lot of fundamentals.

Good bounce back game.
Needs to run as much as he can down floor to get position with less time spent around the 3.
Hoping a healthy rookie season full of highlights and growth for him.

Making conclusions based on Summer League is a waste of time. I had nightmares last night about that Spurs/Blazers game. Awful, ugly basketball. Horror show.

Still, I can't help myself. I'm as excited as anyone to see what Wembanyama can do. But we have to remember he's 19, exhausted from a crazy draft week, and playing in a glorified pickup game with selfish teammates and a target on his back.

Here's what I took away from the game:

Positives
- Takes away so much space on defense. No matter where you are on the court, Wemby is never more than three steps away from contesting your shot.

- Beautiful jumpshot. It's hard to imagine a player with such good form not becoming a solid shooter.

- Insane catch radius. If he seals his defender and puts his hand up for the ball, it's over. There were half a dozen moments where teammates ignored Wemby under the basket. A good point guard will lob it up to him for an easy lay every time.

Negatives
- Many possessions where he tried to score off the dribble and ended up on his ass. I know the coaching staff told him to go ahead and do whatever he wants out there; well, he did, and it wasn't great.

- Didn't look like he had great hands. Hard to tell though, because teammates were not passing him the ball.

- Doesn't look like he knows how to set screens.

Wasn't worried about him after game 1, certainly aren't now. The guy isn't Shaq. He won't come in and sit half the world on their butts. He has a lot to learn, including some pretty basic big man skills (his screening...eeesh...), and he looks better handling on the perimeter than handling in a back down situation.

I can only imagine the Spurs skills coaches rubbing their hands together with everything there is to work with here.

I wouldn't put money on him winning rookie of the year, but I would put money on him being clearly the best player from this class in 4 years.

As talented as he is, I think the Spurs should sit him his first year in the league. Have him hit the weight room, learn NBA basketball fundamentals in practice, and feed him plenty of Texas BBQ. Even in summer league he looks like an injury just waiting to happen. I can't see him lasting a full NBA 82 game season in the shape he is in right now.

after a rough outing, man was that kid impressive in spurts last night. Something that stood out to me is how he took the onus to go guard brandon miller last game, he knows he can be an all time defender and that is where his bread is buttered.

I want to see him crash the glass more as he can get tons of tip outs/ tip backs. Also the footwork getting into screens, he's going to always be open as a target whether he dives or pops. Its a shame the spurs summer league team is complete trash compared to other teams that have starters like portland.

Shut him down? He’s not going to get better by sitting

He ain't gonna get better playing in a glorified G-league exhibition against fringe scrubs either. That is what the actual season is for

His teams season just ended right before the draft btw. Unlike most of the players in the draft he hasn't been sitting on his ass since March

These scrubs are better than anything he faced in Europe . Him settings screens needs work as the video above shows ; he can work on that

If you had to meet the 65 game minimum to win Rookie of the Year (you don't, as far as I know) Wemby would be a really bad bet for that award. Spurs are going to take the long view and they understand better than anyone his body is not ready for the 82 game grind. Lots of load management is a given and if he so much as stubs a toe he'll be out a few weeks just to be sure he's 100%.

That's the right approach for him anyway, imo, until he gains strength.

 no they aren't. Most of these scrubs wouldn't even make a team in Europe

it was clear he doesn't really know how to set a proper screen, luckily he's a quick and eager learner and he'll learn fast

he should and he will, just not in SL
they gave him a couple of games to please the crowd and the media and to give him a little feel for the American game

it's pointless as SL games are so different than what he's actually going to be doing
completely pointless to play him more, pretty standard imo

I think that was the plan all along, we've seen this done numerous times with high picks
