If Jaylen Brown thinks he's on the same level as Jayson Tatum then he's not in touch with reality.

As presently constituted, the Celtics are one Jason Tatum away from being the Washington Wizards. So go ahead and sign John Wall, who cares at this point?

it'll be 8 by the time his extension kicks in..

Not sure about the verbiage in the CBA, but since it’s a clause that is part of the contract entered into by the player, the 8 years should’ve already been served at the time of the signing. At least that’s the way I understand it. It’s at least 8 years before you can have an NTC clause and not at least 8 years before a team can’t trade you without your approval.

For example if a player signs a contract (w/ hypothetical NTC) after 5 years of service, do you mean to tell me his NTC will kick in if he serves 3 more with his current team? I don’t think it works that way. Weird stupid loophole otherwise.

With the weird stuff he's said the past 2-3 years, you have to know that he's somewhat out of touch with reality.
Good assessment:

PLO wrote:Tatum played OK - took advantage of a few mismatches - decent on the defensive end. He is what we thought he was going into the season - a technically very proficient player operating close to his career ceiling as a rookie.

Unfortunately, what you're saying is true.

Its interesting that the majority of the people that want to give away Brown and Brogdon lost their **** when the Celtics traded Smart and to a much lesser extent Grant Williams.

Celtics aren't Portland in terms of a destination but they aren't good enough of one where they can be picky if they have a 2nd team All NBA guy on the roster. They have to overpay to keep talent like that because talent like that won't come here willingly. Guys like Marcus or Grant will come here all the time. Grit and Grind does not win titles. Stars do. Just the way it is.

He's a participation award All-NBA though.

Could a player option essentially function as a NTC for JB?

And that that is the situation has long been established.

No a player option just makes it a 4 year deal potentially instead of 5. Nothing about it functions in any way close to a ntc

Player option does make the contract less attractive but there aren't actually untradeable contracts in the NBA, not even Jaylen Brown on a super max with a player option. You just have to attach a billion draft picks.

No.

By the time this contract would take effect in a year, he would be eligible for the NTC to be included, but C's management would be insane IMO to give him one.

Then again, I think they're misguided to be keeping him for a supermax at all.

By the time this contract would kick in he'd have 8.

I must've misunderstood what Windy said on JJ's podcast.

Edit
Yeah it only applies to minimums
