Strickland played college basketball at DePaul University before being drafted with the 19th pick in the 1988 NBA Draft by his hometown New York Knicks.
Strickland only played one season in Orlando. In 2003-04 he appeared in 46 games, averaging 6.8 ppg and 4.0 apg as a backup point guard. He was teammates with Tracy McGrady and Juwan Howard on a team that finished 21-61.
Strickland is currently the head coach of the Long Island University men's basketball team, where he coaches his two sons.
