What is the point of this nonsense?
SamIam 2010: Truth's ability to play so incredibly efficiently is so UNDERAPPRECIATED. Bballcool 2012: Amazing how great Pierce has been for so long. Continues to defy age! KG 2013: P is original Celtic. Wherever he goes, we go. This is The Truth's house.

We will win this and have the top record while capping the season off with the LOB in june. Being the first team to do that will be great in my view because you wqnt to be a dominant champion if possible

I understand not caring about winning the tournament. The prize doesn't mean anything yet to us but lets be honest mid season basketball really falls off in quality and this might just rejuvenate that for a while. IF the players care about, which I think they will, it could be great. Ofc if they dont, it sucks and it should be discontinued but idk man these guys are competitive maniacs. You're telling me that Lebron or Curry wont care if they're staring down elimination by the Wolves and KAT for example.

Single elimination knockout games are just fun. They provide for high leverage, high quality basketball. Idc if the trophy doesnt mean anything but its a chance at higher quality play before the playoffs and i love that. Besides 500k might be nothing to tatum or lebron or any star but for the payton pritchards and Kornett's of the world, thats still a nice chunk of cash. Im sure the starters would enjoy winning that for the end of bench guys.

Are these games in addition to the 82 games teams are already playing?

Not the group games.

The tournament round of -- 8? -- is additional.

Only the finals is extra; 2 teams will play 83 games instead of 82

Do the 8 games count towards W/L record for the season?

If all teams/players took this seriously (which they prob won’t) it would be a great way to gauge the teams needs better prior to the trade deadline. At least compared to the regular season when teams don’t compete as hard against each other.

Yes the games count for the regular season but the final is not counted. Whixh is why i think most teams will take it seriously especially the knock out stage. If we play the Bucks, Heat, or Sixers in the knockout i think teams will treat it as a mini playoff where you can test out rotation and match ups.

The point is the importance of the regular season has minimize over the years. So this is an attempt to reinvigorate interest in the regular season. For the hardcore fans, we probably watch 70% of games or more but i hear a lot of casual fans say they only watch the finals or a few big games or days like xmas, mlk days, or Saturday prime time. The fact that the NBA was able to introduce this without interrupting the 82 gm season should be a plus.

During the season I watch at least one game a night and when the Celtics play I often watch 2 games that night and a third the next day before games begin. A lot of those games lack intensity until the end of the game. Not as bad as the All-Star game, but still you can tell what's going on. I have my doubts on the results, but I'm willing to give anything that attempts to add intensity to these games a chance.

Half of us care too much about summer league like it means something. Think we won't obsess over this tournament too? LOL

I'm having a few problems guessing the rules.

First, we see rules that suggest 8 teams are coming out of the group stage. But dates suggest it's only a round of 4. Your comment suggests you assume the same thing. (If there were a 3 round tournament with only the final round not counting, the cap would be 84 rather than 83.)

Second, what does it mean to get extra games on the schedule? If the standings at the end of the season are determined by total wins, then doing well in the tournament can only be good. But if they are determined by percentage win-loss record, there can be negative effects.
