“I think we’ll try to add obviously a little bit,” Stevens said. “I’d like to get a little more depth, maybe on the wing, and then also maybe with a 4/3 type. I feel pretty good about our bigs. We’ve got a couple two ways, so we’ve got some things we’re still very much looking at.”
Despite losing Marcus Smart, Stevens also sounded confident in the team’s backcourt as currently constituted, particularly the point guard position.
“Tatum brings the ball up as much as anybody on our team,” Stevens said of the guard rotation. “So we kind of look at it as a positionless team. But Malcolm, Payton, Derrick, Tatum—those will be the guys that get us into offense. You saw tonight, JD is on the court but Banton got us into our offense most of the game. So we’re not really going to have that always designated like you would say, ‘that is a point guard, that is a 2 guard, that is a 3.’ But they’re all really capable. Jaylen as well. Those guys all bring the ball up the court.”

Siakam is, in no way, a high end defender. i get he LOOKS like he should be, but he's more "fine" then high end.
OG is legit great.
Personally think both these guys are getting over rated. I’m sure he’s solid on D, but imo solid average offense and above, maybe even well above average defensively. Just don’t think he is “extra gear elite” defensive guy and he’s going to be same boat as Brown, wanting to get paid like he is.

These guys are the Jaylen Brown of defense, not worth $295 dollars.
Anunoby is the real deal defensively. Wouldn't have been voted 2nd team all-defense otherwise. Perennial all-defense candidate past few years. Ranks in the 90th+ percentile most defensive metrics despite average team performance on that end.
Anunoby is also a much better shooter than JB.
Is he? OG is a 37.5% career three point shooter, Brown is a 36.5% career three point shooter.
Sure, OG made a higher percentage last year but the volume is pretty different. OG took 5.5 3's per 36, Brown took 7.3. Thats a not-insignificant difference in volume which can make a difference for spacing purposes.
Brown was also MUCH better from the mid range especially floater and short mid range.
OG is probably a better pure spot-up shooter, he's hovered around 40% off catch and shoots the last three years. But before THIS season Brown was up around that same level. He really struggled on catch and shoots this year at only 33.4%. If he bounces back more to his career norms his 3 point percentage will improve quite a bit this year.

Jaylen is the much better player, and the player you'd rather have on your team. Period. There's no debate. No stats. Nothing to draw comparisons of the two. Simply put, if you replaced JB with OG, you're a worse basketball team.
Why are you surprised? Just curious. 75% of this board has wanted Brown/Brogdon gone since Smart got traded. You even had a thread posted on this board asking people who would they rather keep, Brown or Marcus Smart and Smart got quite a few votes. There's three types of fans that want to trade Brown on this board.
Fans that are obsessed about Wyc's bank account and check book
Marcus Smart Stans that for some reason blame Brown for him being gone even though Marcus said they had no beef and thus will give Brown away for spare parts just because...
People who think that Brown will demand a trade.
I'm more of the third option where he's probably going to demand a trade. But say they max him out and he has a career year and then asks out next year. Wouldn't you get a package better than what you would this offseason? He'd have term on his contract and would be All NBA again and would still be young. This is why trading him now for 70 cents on the dollar doesn't make any sense.
He won’t have a career year next year. Not with Tatum and Porzingis on board. I think he’s peaked already. He won’t get better stats next year if he stays a celtic. Nobody would want that 295M. We would end up getting half of his value, or end up getting an awful one as well. He’s not a number 1 player. He won’t suddenly learn how to dribble left, and learn to pass the ball.
So he won't be able to outplay Porzingis? The same guy that people on this board are saying can't outplay Marcus Smart? You're taking a lot in from one series and using it because you don't want to pay the player.
Realistically who replaces Brown if you don't want him? OG is not on his level, neither is Siakam, Hunter or any of the other guys being thrown around. Trae is offense only.
I honestly hope that Brown stays and balls out so the posters that treated this guy like a G League talent can look back at some pretty awful takes. You have posters on here that say anything from I'd trade him before Marcus to I'll trade him for anything.

I know the 1a/1b and wanting to be the alpha. But once you've secured the maximum bag possible, wouldn't one shift their focus to championships now that they've got the accolades and secured multi-generational wealth?
I feel like JB has a decent head on his shoulders that winning would be the next focus. It's clear that this past season he was locked into All NBA to unlock the extra $100m (or whatever it was) and received an individual accolade nearly on par with his teammate, now he's free from that. The ring is next thing to do.
I understand that the franchise is taking a sizable gamble on his mood in many subsequent years but I think with the roster as it is today, we have an actual shot at this thing.

Re: Trade/Free Agency Thread, whose NINE is it anyways?? 2023-24
I see a lot of overating of OG's offense on this board right now.
His USG rate this year was like 19ish %. That's around the same as Deandre hunter, Saddiq Bey, Lu Dort, Obi Topin. Nobody thinks of those guys as better than okay offensive players. And that's on a team that desperately needed any sort of shot creation it could get. The guy is basically a spot up shooter and not much else.
Meanwhile if you guys hate Browns passing/turnovers you won't like OG much. Brown had an ast% and TOV% of 16.5 and 11.4% last year. OG's was 8.0% and 12.1% respectively. He gets to the line almost never. .189 ftr this year.
He is not a good offensive player. He's a stand in the corner, get out on the break player almost exclusively. His defense is legit great, but he benefits some on that end from a low offensive work load. Same way Tatum had better advanced defensive metrics as a lower USG% young guy before his USG skyrocketed.
I like him a lot as a third wing 5th starter next to White/Brown/Tatum/KP. he fits in PERFECTLY in that lineup. Spot up and guard the best perimeter player on the other team. Perfect for that role.
I would not be doing a Brown swap for him.

Interesting. No more bigs. This tells me Kornet is staying. Griffin likely won't be resigned. And that's it for bigs - we'll probably have a big on a 2-way, probably either Azuibuke or Balcerowski..
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything

Seems like he believes PG and BIG are somewhat set. I'm a little worries bout front court injuries tbh, but the nice thing about wings or a 3/4 guy is they can play PF if you have injures to your bigs. Tatum certainly can, Brisset can, Brown can even do so in a pinch.

The Celtics fired their head coach, a much more important part of their organisation than some replacement level end of bench guy, over what most people would consider far less serious charges. By the way, they were absolutely right to take a stand on that issue. Some things are bigger than basketball. That anybody would think the Celtics have any interest in Davis after what happened to Udoka boggles my mind. Personnally, I find it yucky (I don't think I can use the adjective I really want to use) that people are advocating signing that type of guy to the Celtics.
Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Joe have prior issues with hitting people? What kind of stance is that?
Brown's #1 fan on this forum.

I like Korny. I am so much a fan of using the Kornet contest as the standard way my rover big closes out shooters. Fine with him staying, will be a little bummed not having a better moving big available if Rob goes down.

My 2 cents which isn't worth much is Brown isn't a max player however, your generally worth what someone is willing to give you. Given that there isn't a lot of players in the NBA and frankly hardly any available to the Celtics better than Jaylen you may have to overpay. My biggest issues with Jaylen is he lacks awareness outside of getting his. He doesn't play good team D, he doesn't pass well, etc and to me there is better roster fits with Tatum than Jaylen. Not that he isn't good but the Celtics maybe better optimized with a different type of 2nd star. For example Mikail Bridges to me would be a much better fit next to Tatum. However I'd venture to guess NJ wouldn't even want to do a 1 for 1.
Just curious why you think mikal is a better fit ? Is it just the defense ? Cause he’s equally iffy as a passer, a worse driver/penetrator and roughly equivalent shooter. Mikal might be better going forward and ofc the contract is fantastic but mikal had one 25 game stretch where he equalled brown’s production while his team went 11-14.
But yeah the defense is obviously fantastic; just curious why you think another wing who can’t pass or handle that well is a better fit
Turnover rate super low. Really good shooter. Likely to be more bought in on a secondary role. Better defender. Better bball instincts.

I don't necessarily agree that is a perfect lineup because:
2 guys who have been getting 30% or higher usage, plus another guy who has been getting around 27-30% usage on the same team, and none of them are getting you an assist % of 22 or higher...yikes! Not to mention 1 of them was just saying in the media that he sees himself as equal to Tatum
3 other things to keep in mind:
-Just spitting out a few random players who have similar usage % does not at all mean that all of those players have the same level of offensive ability. By that logic, JB is just as good offensively as Tatum, in which case you're just as delusional as JB for thinking that
-If anything, OG having such a low usage % is a feather in his cap. Pretty impressive imo to still average around 16-17 PPG with such a low usage %. Sounds to me like a very efficient player. A guy who can knock down catch and shoot 3's, a good cutter, good at finishing in transition, can attack closeouts, finish out of the dunker's spot - all while playing elite defense at an all-NBA level. Sounds like the perfect #3 guy on a team that already has 2 very dynamic scorers (neither of whom is an all-NBA level defender) in Tatum and Porzingis. OG would complement those 2 guys, he would add to them...JB would simply take away from them.
-Having assist and turnover % that aren't very good. I can live with that, I can still win a championship with that, if we're talking about a #3 option who is only getting a usage % around 19 or 20. I CANNOT live with that, I CANNOT win a championship with that, if we're talking about the #2 option who gets a usage % of about 30-31.
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything

Brisset and Tatum can play the 4. If they get another 3/4 that guy can play the 4. If that's the case you have 4 centers. How many do you need?

No realistic replacement is out there and if they were they would be going to NY LA or Miami, not Boston. Thats why you have to pay him and worry about the pending trade request next year. As long as he performs next year teams will take him.
Gonna ignore your silliness about the "players want to go to NY/LA/Miami thing once again.
Where has there been literally any indication that Brown wants to leave? Literally every report says he likes Boston and wants to stay. I have no idea where this trade request nonsense is coming from
They don't? They just seem to always be in the mix in all these requests by pure coincidence I guess. Give me one person who has asked for a trade and not asked to go to one of those markets aside from Beal who wanted to go to Phoenix because of the team and weather? Even last year Kyrie was begging and pleading to get sent to LA. KD wanted Miami and the Nets to their credit pretty much told both of them to **** off. James Harden wants to leave the Sixers for either the Clippers or the freaking Knicks. Both in those markets. Again, neither really makes much basketball sense...but Endorsements, Nightlife, Being a Celebrity, it has a ton of appeal in those two markets.
Why is it so hard for you to acknowledge that the glamour markets are still very very real in the NBA? lol.
Anyways, Its been out there for 2 years that he wanted to go back to Atlanta and there were whispers about if he couldn't get Atlanta he wanted Miami. Smoke and Fire type thing
This is one of the rare times there there happens to be good teams in all of NY/Miami/LA.
Who was going to NY/LA several years back when their teams were trash? Those teams couldn't even get meetings with big time players. Miami has been good for a while so they have attracted free agents but they have spent their time in NBA irrelevancy as well.
I'd love to see an example of a star player demanding a trade to one of those teams when the team was bad.
