Vit should have been starting at PG the entire Summer League. He gets guys the ball early in the shot clock and in position to score. So much more fluid with him on the floor.

I believe Kobe and AJ Griffin would have benefited from a sure handed, unselfish PG running the offense and letting them focus on only scoring -- especially since that will likely be their roles on the big league team.

It was a miscalculation to have Kobe on-ball from the jump, especially since he rarely ran point in college on a FT basis.

Also Viva la VIT!!!

Thinking we're missing the point here. They are trying to develop KB into a pg for better or worse, not win sl games. So far loved what I'm seeing from Gueye, Lundy, and Morris. The G League will be fun to follow.

Since Hawks are not in the SL Semifinals and have no chance at winning the whole thing, I'd be okay if Kobe didn't play the final game. Give the minutes, shots, responsibility to other players hoping to make an impression and catch on with teams.

Interesting choice to go with this same group as starters...

Looks like the entire team (outside of Kobe) was just ready to go home. The guys really mailed it in tonight.

I can't say I blame 'em...

Kobe looks like ****. He's defense has been terrible. Playmaking been horrendous. He's chucking his ass off. He's been awful

I actually been fine with Kabs and Gueye today. Everyone else been struggling offensively. Defensively, it's been bad for everyone but Gueye.

No. Kobe hasn't been great. I see it as poor coaching and and roster construction. They threw him on-ball at PG even though the strength of his game is:

  • playing off ball
  • utilizing back door cuts
  • nailing catch and shoot jumpers
  • attacking closeouts
  • second side playmaking.

I don't know why Lang and company put him at PG knowing he won't get many reps there as a pro on this team. Probably evaluating him and how he responds to adversity (on disorganized teams in games that do not matter at all).

As a skinny 19 year old kid, he improved as the week went on.

TBH, AJ's lack of success, preparation and interest concerns me more than Kobe's struggles. I assumed he'd dominate. He looked completely disinterested, however.

Ouch.

Biggest Losers from NBA Las Vegas Summer League

Atlanta Hawks

Image

For a Hawks team showcasing some of its best young talent, the overall performances from AJ Griffin and rookie Kobe Bufkin were underwhelming.

While Bufkin hit what would end up being a game-winning shot against the Philadelphia 76ers and had some of the best passes of summer league, the 19-year-old guard looked out of control at times, averaging 5.5 turnovers and 4.0 fouls a game.

"Kobe (Bufkin) needs to settle down a little," one Hawks personnel member told Spotrac.com's Keith Smith. It'll come for him. We're deep, but not in ballhandlers. Kobe could find a rotation role this year."

Overall, Bufkin shot just 31.6 percent from the field and a miserable 17.4 percent from three. The No. 15 pick this summer, Bufkin will need to cut down on his turnovers and start hitting more shots for an Atlanta team that's in danger of suffering a first-round playoff exit yet again.

Griffin, the No. 15 pick in 2022, was supposed to be the alpha of the group given his strong rookie season for the Hawks. Instead, he ended up as the team's sixth-leading scorer in summer league, averaging just 9.0 points on 27.3 percent shooting overall.

If Atlanta wants to take yet another big swing in the trade market for a player like Pascal Siakam, young players like Bufkin and Griffin are some of their best trade assets. Getting some big performances from both could have helped convince executives in Toronto part with Siakam. Instead, there's likely more hesitancy for a deal, forcing the Hawks to include even more picks and players in a potential deal.

I agree about Aj. he looked totally uninterested. Maybe he didn't want to be there at all. After the way he was side-lined during the second half of last season and then being put on the SL team..he might be a bit disgruntled

As for Kobe, his only chance to make it in the NBA might be tied to his ability to play PG. He will not cut it as an NBA SG

It's been...3 weeks.

He's played 0 NBA games. Maybe give it a bit longer before making grand declarations on what he is or isn't capable of.

He's right, it's unlikely. He's not athletic enough to be just a decent shooter at that position

Summer League results are not particularly important, but some well earned accolades and improved trade values would be appreciated by the fanbase about now...
