Re: 2022 Minor League/Prospects Discussion Thread
Orelvis corked his first AAA homer last night. He went 1-5. Mind you, it was an 18-hit night for Buffalo. Two of his teammates had five hit nights.
Also promoted in the past couple of days. Corner outfielder Alan Roden, leading hitter on that powerful Vancouver team. has moved to NH. If the Jays make a significant deadline deal, it wouldn't surprise me if a prospect or two from Vancouver are the major parts from the Jays' side.
I'd say, strictly eye-test stuff, the Jays have a lot of decent position player prospects, though only Orelvis is a top 100 rated one (BA put him back into its top 100 at 67 IIRC). The pitching is a bigger concern. Both Ricky Tiedemann and Brandon Barriera had lost a lot of injury time, although both are now in different stages of rehab, ought to see both in games again soon.
Some of the middle infielders are redundant prospects, i.e. they can be viewed as legitimate shortstops, but we have Bo. Leo Jimenez at NH is a good example of a strong glove SS - it earned him protection on the 40 man roster. His bat and power are coming along, and he's still only 22. With so many other middle infield prospects in the system, he might be the one another team covets in a trade that the Jays feel they can surrender, since Orelvis and Barger might be better candidates for replacing Chapman in the long run.
There also are square peg prospects like Roden, who doesn't profile well for a corner outfield spot since he doesn't exhibit a whole lot of power, but you can't ignore the production. Then again, a guy with a 9% K rate, who walks more than he strikes out might be a better fourth OF/1B than other candidates and if he hits .300 at the major league level, you have to consider his value in the lower third of the lineup either bringing in runners or setting the table for the top of the order. He was Vancouver's leadoff hitter. He's intrigued me since the Jays made him their third round pick in 2022, but he was likely selected so high in part for his under slot value - signing him for half a million less than slot was part of the strategy for going overslot on Barriera and being able to sign three second round picks (Toman, Doughty and Kasevich). If he makes the majors for the Jays or is useful in a trade, that's almost as sweet from a drafting perspective as having one of the four drafted ahead of him turn into solid MLBers.

Yes, ( one of the five hits guys) what does poor Ernie Clement have to do to get a major league job?
I agree that we’re developing some good middle infield prospects and for no particular reason have an affinity for Jimenez. I loathe to think about redundancy too much though as Bo isn’t that far from free agency and will be a really tough sign.
As for Roden or even Kasevich, I hope the Blue Jays can start to find success with the high contact profile that they’re clearly so in love with. Their recent high contact, high profile prospects like Austin Martin and Jordan Groshans finding no success driving the ball. I even wonder if that’s one of the reasons that they let go of Moreno so easily. Despite his home run here, the extra base hit ability has really eluded him in both the Majors and the Minors.

Roden's deceptively athletic: 15 SBs already on the year at an 88% success rate. Doesn't project as a good defender, but he should be an adequate LF if the bat is worthwhile.
I'm normally the low man on the older, advanced-bat guys performing in A ball, but Roden definitely has a chance to be at least a platoon guy. Doesn't have big power, but he hits a tonne of hard liners and consequently doubles. His OBP is probably a bit illusory (he's getting hit a ridiculous number of times despite not really standing on top of the plate), but turning a few of those doubles to right into HRs could turn him into a solid prospect.

If we get lucky and Orelvis and Addison both make it to MLB and earn starting spots for next season ( a long shot I know) who plays 2B and who plays 3B?

That would be a rich man’s problem. Barger plays a bit more 2B in the minors, though mainly 3B and SS.

can't we just add Tiedemann to the bullpen?

Don't need him badly enough to mess with his development. Hopefully Chad Green is ready soon.

I was coming here to post Orelvis is the ideal trade chip for a MLB SP, then I saw he hasn't hit above 0.226 since 2021.
He needs to breakout in the most unusual way before called up to the Big Leagues - up his contact skills

He threw two clean innings with 3K for the FCL jays, but with the miserly pitch counts they alliow him, he’ll be lucky ti get to the Jays before 2025. He’ll be as good as his body allows him.
Brandon Barriera threw 3 clean innings with 3K for Dunedin, and if he’s healthy and in shape, I’d expect him to get much bigger pitch counts going forward.

In his last 35 games at AA before promotion he was hitting .295 with an OBP over 400. Small sample, but he may have turned a corner.
He is only 21 and just made it to AAA. The power is real. It would be nice to have a prospect turn into a legit MLBer on our team. Don't want to trade him.

who are our rule 5 eligible prospects that will be needed to be added to 40 man next year, that's potentially whom we may move at the deadline.

Not many that they would likely bother with. Maybe Adam Kloffenstein, although I doubt he is a high priority to protect. Zueleta, Danner, Jimenez, Martinez, Horwitz, Lopez are on the 40 man roster. I can't think of anyone high enough in the farm system whom they'd strongly like to keep and who is going to be Rule 5 eligible. And there will be a name or two dropped from the 40 man before the list is frozen. If the Jays do anything consequential at the deadline, it might be with someone on the current 40 man, or someone not draft eligible this year, or a combination of both.
If you look at the 2019 draft, Manoah was our first round pick, Ken Williams our second round pick (he's been traded), Dasan Brown (I believe) has one more year of eligibility because he was 18, and then you hit a slew of position players who are in the system but likely not interesting enough to use a 40 man space on.
I'd be interested to see if another team is interested enough in Spencer Horwitz and Leo Jimenez in particular (for different reasons). Both a sitting behind younger Jays in any depth chart, Jimenez behind Bo (as well as other infielders) and Horwitz sits below Vlad and (this season anyway) Belt. Horwitz is on a really hot streak, hit his 20th double tonight for his 52 RBI, upping his average to .322. Whatever value he has, it's never been higher and might be able to secure a modest rental bat.

Apparently got on the radar by having a big performance at the elite-level WWBA tournament, considered a good pure hitter for whom the rest is up in the air. Being from NJ, he might've lost out a bit as many cold-weather kids do owing to lack of eyeballs. That's about my limit of knowledge.
See you at his HOF induction in 2040.
