"Is the Malcolm Brogden injury so bad that he's untradeable?"
Is that the reason the Bulpett report came out as cover?
Injury is going to require 6 - 8 months recovery.
"Keep an ear and eye out for that."
""Are you saying Jim, he's really injured?' No, I'm just throwing something out there I heard."
Jim Murray - SportsHub today

Personally, I doubt this greatly, as it would contradict Steven's communique, but you never know with the Celts and injured players.

This is pretty interesting. There's a clause in the new CBA that protects teams from players holding out and refusing to play during the final year of their contract.

If I'm understanding it, if a player in the last year of his contract sits out for the first 30 days of the season, his contract is voided and he becomes a free agent but can't sign with any other team without the permission of his previous team. So the team could just decide the player's career is over.

Sixers Protected From James Harden Holding Out Due To Obscure Clause In CBA

A report this week indicated James Harden plans to report to camp with the Philadelphia 76ers and additional information Zach Lowe gleaned from the NBA's collective bargaining agreement could explain why that is his position. Harden continues to want a trade from the Sixers with the Los Angeles Clippers his preferred team.

"There's an obscure clause in the collective bargaining agreement that says the following: 'A player who is in the last year of his contract.' Okay, so that's James Harden. He's on an expiring contract," said Zach Lowe on his podcast.

"'Who withholds his playing services for more than 30 days after the start of the last season covered by his contract shall be deemed', I'm paraphrasing now, 'should be deemed to have violated his contract. Accordingly, such a player shall not be a veteran free agent and shall not be entitled to negotiate or sign a contract with any other professional basketball team unless and until the team from which the player last played expressly agrees otherwise.'

"I was alerted to that clause by people who would know what it means. And then I checked with other people who would know what it means and I said 'Am I an idiot or does this say he doesn't actually show up, the Sixers, because he's on an expiring contract, can block him in perpetuity from signing in the NBA?'

"And I checked with legal people and cap people and team people and whatever people, and the answer every time was 'Yes. And not only the NBA, any other professional basketball teams means exactly what you think it is.

"So if you just read that, that's why I made the comment about James' quote showing his ass as you put it, because given that reality, if he's not traded, he kind of has to show up and we know what happens if he shows up and he's unhappy because we've seen it over and over again."

The clause Lowe references in the collective bargaining agreement is from Article XI, Section 3.

Players in the NBA have rarely held out while actively under contract and will typically agitate for a trade while ostensibly with the team. Ben Simmons reported to practice with the Sixers in 2021 before he stepped away from the team in their standoff. Lowe also reported this week that Simmons received credit for a year of service for the 21-22 season despite not appearing in any games.

I don't know why it's an "obscure clause in the CBA." It's a clause in the CBA like everything else.

Code: Select all

 Section 3. Withholding Services.
A player who withholds playing services called for by a Player Contract for more than thirty (30) days after the start of the last Season covered by his Player Contract shall be deemed not to have “complet[ed] his Player Contract by rendering the playing services called for thereunder.” Accordingly, such a player shall not be a Veteran Free Agent and shall not be entitled to negotiate or sign a Player Contract with any other professional basketball team unless and until the Team for which the player last played expressly agrees otherwise.

Pretty obvious NBPA agreed to this only because it'll never be enforced.

Also this isn't new. Was part of the old CBA too. And harden can just show up and suck, not give effort. Like he's done twice before.

Personally, I doubt this greatly, as it would contradict Steven's communique, but you never know with the Celts and injured players.

Windhorst said something similar to this but the only way this would make sense is if he tore his UCL and needs Tommy John or something.

Jim Murray said that Bam Adebayo and another Heat player got covid in the 2022 ECF and it turned out that two Heat staffers did so grain of salt there for sure

We'll see. Brad the other day said that Brogdon is likely feeling good enough to avoid surgery.

I'm not real worried about it because I think the narrative about Brogdon being very injured came from a misconception about why the trade sending him out in the Porzingis deal fell through.

The initial tweets made it sound like it fell through because he failed a physical. But it actually fell through because the trade deadline was hours/minutes away and there was no time for him to take a physical.

So I have no reason or evidence to not believe Brad when he says Brog is fine and ready to play this season.

Yeah Brad/Himmelsbach have downplayed it the whole summer so I'm not going to sit here and pretend like this is 100% truth, but I do think it's worth noting just because Windhorst said something similar. Brad also did say something recently too that he thinks he's going to avoid surgery and that he could be cleared for bball activities soon and all.

If somehow this is true, and he has something like a torn/partially torn UCL, my guess is the Clippers flagged it and didn't want to chance it on a guy who may recover from the injury with no surgery, but it doesn't always happen. Like Paul George, he got a torn UCL but then recovered in 3 months without surgery.

Anyway, we'll see. I hope he's wrong for sure.

Celtics Blog has a roundtable on one final move for the Celtics...

https://www.celticsblog.com/2023/7/21/23802143/one-more-move-staff-roundtable-boston-celtics-nba-offseason

Ethan Fuller

The summer free agency frenzy has long died down, but dozens of intriguing young castoffs still remain unsigned. My answer is broad, but I’d simply like the Celtics to swing on one or two more unsigned younger talents before training camp. Jaylen Nowell, 24, could add a scoring punch off the bench at guard. Trendon Watford is only 22 and had positive flashes as a versatile forward with the Trail Blazers. Svi Mykhailiuk, Dylan Windler, PJ Dozier, and Hamidou Diallo are all under 28 and each have some level of NBA rotation potential. I’d even want to see a Romeo Langford reunion with lower stakes. But generally, I’d prefer looking for young depth before adding aging veterans.

Benjamin Torbert

Brogdon is the only move I could potentially see that would have a dramatic impact on the Celtics roster outlook. The reasons to consider moving him include health concerns, chemistry concerns after the aborted Clippers trade, and the fact that his salary slot and skill level means you could potentially get useful pieces back. It’s a hard needle to thread though. He needs to return some combination of a capable ball handler, shooting, and a top 7 rotation player that can be trusted in the playoffs. Proposed deal: Brogdon (2/45), Kornet (2.4) and a lottery protected ‘24 1st to Detroit for Bojan Bogdanovic (2/39) and Monte Morris (9.8). Detroit takes two vets (a shooter/scorer and a ball handler) and combines them into one player (Brogdon) and picks up a late 1st for taking on Brogdon’s injury history. The Celtics replace Brogdon’s shooting, scoring, and top 7 rotation status in the bigger, more durable Bogdanovic. However, they maintain a PG in Morris for next year who would slot in as the Celtics 8th man and push Hauser and Pritchard down to the 9-10 spots in the rotation.

Jack Simone

It feels unlikely that Boston makes any other big-time moves, but adding another big man to the rotation feels like the next logical step. Kristaps Porzingis and Robert Williams have a shaky injury history, and Al Horford is 36 years old. Those three will obviously take up the bulk of the minutes, but adding a fourth-string big (next to Luke Kornet) could help take the pressure off them. My personal favorite idea is Trendon Watford. He played well for the Portland Trail Blazers this past season, averaging 7.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 56.0% from the field and 39.1% from distance (on low three-point volume). He’s a big-bodied 6-foot-9 and still only 22 years old. Feels like the perfect guy to play 10-15 minutes when the Celtics need him to this season, and he still has the potential to grow into a larger role down the line.id backup PG in Morris for next year who would slot in as the Celtics 8th man and push Hauser and Pritchard down to the 9-10 spots in the rotation.

You're probably right. But imo he's at least someone to consider. Sure, someone like Lamar Stevens, Derrick Jones Jr, Javonte or Danny Green would probably be better in terms of playing team basketball and accepting a limited role on a stacked team like ours.

BUT Oubre (at this point in each player's career) probably has more talent than all of those guys.
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

Looks like he's very quick, can handle the ball, can score and make some slick passes..dude drove by Jaden Ivey (probably one of the 5 fastest dudes in the league). And took Quickley (a good defender) off the dribble and scored on him with ease.

Show and suck, and don’t show up the ff games, fake some minor injuries. That could get ugly for them.

I honestly don't know what the big deal is. If you're already offering the supermax, give JB the player option already. It's not unusual to cede that to the player.

I genuinely believe that Brown just wants the drama and is entirely the reasoning for the delay in the signing.

Wants to come off as the alpha of the deal. Wa ts his name in the media. Wants to be talked about.
