Well, I assume you're taking issue with Strus because Niang who's 30 years old is getting just $8M?

Stus is entering his prime at 27 and getting his first big pay day, and even at $15M it still de-rates to be about the same as $7.8M Frye was making back in 2015. The luxury tax level was at $84.74M then and now it's $165.3M, so, nearly 2X.

We just saw Kevin become literally useless to us when he couldn't knock down 3pters. Of course Niang isn't just a shooter either, but I doubt he sees much playtime if he can't knock down shots.

Of course the Cavs aren't going to get anyone for cheap in free-agency unless we're the last team with money to spend, but we got the guys we wanted at prices we could afford.

I have no issue with either, they are a necessity. I had Strus valued at the MLE and he got slightly more and Niang valued at the BAE and he got slightly more.

Per % of the cap, you're right Sturs/Frye and Niang/Korver are similar.

But Love wasn't the 34 year old version of himself when he signed either extension.

Your valuations are the low-end - what multiple teams would have gladly paid them. We wanted those specific players and in order to get them we needed to offer them more money and a better opportunity than they were likely to get from Miami/Philly or another team.

Buying something at or below value at an auction is tricky even when bidding on inanimate objects that don't play favorites.

Kevin even at the end of the contract was capable of many more things than Niang, but Niang has been better at the one thing we most needed from Kev - aka burying 3pters. We'll see how it washes out, but there's only one basketball and ideally we pick up the numbers we're losing from Kevin via other players.

Allen/Mobley will need to pickup their rebounding or else JBB will need to get creative about how we go after boards (maybe CPJ can put on a clinic for the team).
I was more so saying Niang has only made $9 million combined his first 7 seasons in the league and the Cavs are going to pay him $8.8 million this upcoming season.

And furthermore, Strus has only made $2 million combined his first 4 seasons in the league and the Cavs are going to pay him $14.48 million this upcoming season.

Given those realities, plus Strus being a S&T I wouldn't say they came cheap.

To your final point, i know most fans on this forum are worried about the rebounding.

By cheap I was referring to our limited resources. A player's value is by definition what someone is willing to pay, and we couldn't pay much. Albeit the S&T for Strus let us pay more and beat out other teams not willing to do the same.

Well, a lot of those potential suitors for the 14 spot coming off the board.

Noel to the Kings
Bol Bol to the Suns
Yurtseven to the Jazz
Kaminsky to Israel
Okafor to Spain

fwiw, Sportrac says we still hold some degree of rights to 7 players: Windler, Green, Davis, Neto, Rondo, Diakite, and Goodwin.

I haven't seen any updates on Windler, Green, Neto, or Diakite and I could see us giving any of these guys a training camp invite and perhaps dangling a roster spot or two with or without a guarantee depending how we need to manage the cap.

Our rights don't actually matter if all we'd be offering is a minimum contract. It wouldn't hurt to be able to kick tires on Windler and Green and see how they've recovered from their injuries - unless we feel we already know the answer.

I'm good on Windler, hardly playing a full NBA season in 4 years is absurd. If he wants to sign an exhibit 10 deal like MKG did once his career was over, I'm fine with that. No more investing serious time or assets in Windler's sawdust knees though.

We have the medicals on him, so if he is literally made of glass, we'll just quietly move on and not revisit.

But it doesn't seem like any of his injuries were particularly serious or detrimental to his career other than how his confidence was wrecked and how even minor injuries would seemingly sideline him for months.

We'd have a fun, competitive camp. But I have a feeling JB wants a veteran in spot #14, especially if we consider making a move w/ Rubio's salary.

Well, unless we decide to leave Pete Nance up for grabs on the Charge, we could decide to convert one of our 2-ways in to a roster spot so we can offer the 2-way to Pete.

Our roster looks full up at the moment, but presumably that will quickly change as players go down to injury. Ideally we'd defer a decision on the two remaining spots until it's clearer what we've got and what we may need.

Of course if Windler or someone wants to sign up on a fully non-guaranteed deal, we'd be free to cut him loose if he wasn't helping and try to sign someone who could. That's one way we could fill the spot and keep flexibility.

Yeah, I'd rather not leave Nance up for grabs. Plus, Mobley is getting a league minimum deal out of us eventually anyway, so just go ahead and do it.

Frankly, it's not just his propensity for getting injured that concerns me, it's his recovery time. Over the course of an 82 game season, you might have to play a few games at less than 100%, especially if you're a bench player who's already getting limited minutes.

Yeah, either Windler's unwillingness or inability to do that made any path forward with him impossible.

At least the Cavs got Garland outta that draft, Windler and KPJ gave the Cavs nothing and both left for no return assets.

Woulda been better to draft Jordan Poole and Keldon Johnson with those picks but hindsight is 20/20.

Poole was salary dumped with draft capital attached to him and Johnson shot pretty poorly after getting his extension (and shooting was his only skill). Sometimes just letting a guy go is the best option.

True and not much was really given up to acquire either pick.

fwiw, Sportrac says we still hold some degree of rights to 7 players: Windler, Green, Davis, Neto, Rondo, Diakite, and Goodwin.

I could see either Green or Diakite getting it.

None of those other guys are even remotely interesting

Danny can't play anymore but he's a good vet end of the bencher. Diakite is an ok energy guy if everyone else is injured.

Return to Cleveland Cavaliers
