2023 FIBA World Cup thread.

Post#1 » by Jiipee84 » Sat Jul 22, 2023 8:30 pm

Fiba world cup is about a month away.
Next Jazz players are representing their countries into tournament.
USA Walker Kessler
Philippines Jordan Clarkson
Italy Simone Fontecchio
Canada Kelly Olynyk
Finland Lauri Markkanen

No idea who's go TV rights in USA but i think at least Team USA games should be televised.
So far Finland has announced that Finland will play some pre-tournament games before FIBA World Cup vs Lithuania and Estonia.

Finland will play their FIBA world cup group stage games in Okinawa.
Finland's group is very hard and it is likely Finland won't make playoff round

Next teams are same group with Finland
Australia
Japan
Germany

Here's official 2023 Fiba world Cup website.

Has Markkanen completed his military obligations?

The real decision the Jazz FO is making is between Continuity, Cap Flexibility, and Cash Considerations.

Not yet, he will still get some credit for time spent with the NT, but he won't be able to complete his service this summer.
He will put in the remaining days some later offseason, and I wouldn't worry about that.
We won't put the national hero in harm's way.

Is he playing for Finland this off season? I thought he couldn't make it due to the military obligations

Lauri is absolutely playing in the World Cup and just about to join the NT for the preparation camp.
He is serving in a military program for top athletes, where representing the country is kinda part of the service.

They aren't so strict there in the Finnish military on big time sports stars. He can get many weeks off if he wants to from the military and now he is using that priviledge. If I remembver right, he said few days ago that he has 42 days remaining in the military and it's possible that some holidays are included in that number.

I posted this info on another thread but I'll post this here as well about Lauri Markkanen's (Finland's) prep game schedule as Markkanen is quite popular guy on these boards. If you don't get to see the full games, you can expect highlights about those games around these dates.

9th of August - Finland (home team) - Estonia (away) - Finnish time: 18:30 game (studio 18:20) - 11:30 ET (New York time)
14th of August - Lithuania (home team) - Finland (away) - 19:30 game (studio 19:20) - 12:30 ET (New York time)
16th of August - Latvia (home team) - Finland (away) - 19:30 game (studio 19:20) - 12:30 ET (New York time)

Good to note that many suspect that Lauri will not play in the Estonia game as it's not as high level team compared to Lithuania and Latvia, but maybe he does. Never know.

Lithuania & Latvia games come from the Finnish TV4 (aka channel Four, in Finnish it's called "Nelonen") channel if you some how can find a stream for that channel. I don't know if such exist. Estonia game comes from another channel.

Finland's World Cup games:

25th of August - Finland - Australia
27th of August - Japan (host country) – Finland
29th of August - Germany – Finland

Clarkson has just arrived today in the Philippines. Of course, we're excited, it's once in a blue moon when we have an actual NBA player in the lineup.

The Philippines is grouped with Italy (should be the favorites to win the group), Dominican Republic (definite contenders in the group since they have Towns) and Angola (we think this is the winnable game for us; still tough but not as tough as the first two)

You should see plenty of Clarkson's scoring (as if you're not familiar with that yet Jazz fans) but he's basically the Option 1, 2 and 3 for us so if you're a fan you'll get to see him a lot on loaded minutes and even more loaded responsibility. LOL

He got only 4 minutes in a blow out game. Disappointing.
Looks like Kerr is using Banchero at the 5 a lot.

Not so good game for Lauri and Team Finland vs Australia in Fiba world cup today.
Australia guarded Lauri really tightly whole game and that caused huge troubles for Finland's scoring.

Lauri scored only 19 points which wasn't enough at all.
And being honest Lauri hasn't been his best version in national team at all this year.

I don't know why that's so but probably it has something to do with Lauri's military service
because Lauri hasn't had enough time to practice and get ready for Fiba world cup
and NBA season and maybe Finland's lack pre-tournament games
before the tournament is one reaso also.

Finland needs to now win next 2 games ( Japan and Germany ) to make next round in Fiba world cup.
But even that probably won't be enough because that group where susijengi plays
is prorbably most bad in entire tournament so the odds are against Finland
what comes to real succes in this tournament.

For Australia, 35 year old Patty Mills was back to lighting up the scoreboard in international play, while Josh Giddey had 8 assists and 9 rebounds to go along with his 14 points. Ingles and Exum had good games, with Ingles scoring 13 pts on 8 fga in 20 mins and Exum scoring 10 pts on 5 fga in 16 mins. Australia has a lot of talent, but they are probably going to end up missing Jock Landale, who left the team with an ankle injury nine days ago.

Kelly Olynyk had 18 pts on 9 fga in 23 minutes of action in Canada's 95-65 blowout win over France. Gobert had just 8 pts on 9 fga along with 9 rebs in 27 mins of action. Canada won the rebound battle 45 rebs to 35 rebs and 15 orebs to 6 orebs.

Fontecchio was the leading scorer for Italy in a win over Angola. He had 19 pts on 14 fga, but he was missing his threes.

One way is to rewatch highly condensed versions of games here at the FIBA basketball website below. Scroll down to Full Games:
https://www.fiba.basketball/basketballworldcup/2023/videos

You supposedly can sign up for a Courtside 1891 World Cup Event Pass for free and watch the games live:
https://www.courtside1891.basketball/plans

I think most of the games are on ESPN+.
