Immediate Hall of Fame RealGM post; you should make it into its own thread.

(And I appreciate having more material to use for my eventual Bob Lanier nomination. 8-) )

Are the excised rankings just players who played too few minutes to come across as notable? Might be appropriate to set a certain minimum games played threshold; I notice top rookies seem to do inordinately well.

I had the exact opposite reaction.

VOTE

1. KG
2. Magic

Could go either way really but KG is closer so I guess i'll let him get the 1st place ballot. Seems Shaq's 2nd-place support still has given him the advantage, but KG looks like he'll get close(magic also if you count his non-shaq 2nd place ones). Perhaps this is a sign that "kg vs shaq" has replaced "kg vs kobe" on the PC Board?

I've largely made the case for both but to summarize

KG
-> one of the most valuable players ever,
->incredible longevity,
-> did rather well despite sub-optimal situations for most of his prime,
-> showed out at his best in the playoffs despite his best help getting hurt.
-> won a title post-prime with mvpish impact(bitw case isn't very strong with the minutes played, but hard to say he wasn't at least top 5)

Magic
-> strongest impact portfolio of the 80's/90's
-> "god"ly creator only really rivalled(or approached) by nash
-> saw much better offensive results than a allegedly more "scalable" rival(bird)
-> case as best winner post-russell
-> was on an incredible trajectory until he was pressured out of the league due to HIV

nomination vote:

Kobe

-> impact looks about as impressive as the guy nominated over him in the last thread (bird)
-> more "complete" and translatable skillset to the guy nominated over him in the last thread
-> more resilient than the guy nominated over him in the last thread
-> far better longevity to the extent his "career championship value" is comfortably higher even if you view bird as a top 5 peak and kobe as a fringe top 20 one
-> impact likely suppressed due to situational context(90th percentile or close in almost every type of offensive play, forced to iso a bunch in triangle with no illegal d)
-> has experienced more team success than anyone left on the board save for Mikan and Magic
-> decent case as the best performer on arguably the most dominant playoff-team ever

I imagine his main competition for actually being voted in will be Steph and/or Bird. Frankly I'm not sure on Kobe or Steph, but I am pretty confident with Kobe over Bird so I'll expand a bit on that.

More specifically I'll expand a bit on passing =/ creation and what it means relative to Bird.

Bird's scoring peak was 28.2 pp75 with +7.0 rTS%. The team had a rORTG of 7.3. His 3 yr PS was 23.8 pp75 at +4.7 rTS%. A fair decline, which I believe is the biggest criticism around Bird.

Magic's scoring peak like Bird's came a few years after his peak. 22.5 pp75 on +8.5 rTS% with a team rORTG of 5.9. His peak, the team had a rORTG of 7.3. 3 yr PS peak was 21.2 pp75 on +7.5 rTS%.

Okay, but as you acknowledge: Magic is a "creation" god. This is not a fair comparison. How about instead of this selective filter we just compare their best offenses?

bird

1984 +3.3 (RS) +6.4 (PS)
1985 +4.9 (RS) +3.9 (PS)
1986 +4.6 (RS) + 8.3 (PS)
1987 +5.2 (RS) + 8.7 (PS)
1988 +7.4 (RS) +4.2 (PS)
average +5.1(RS) +6.3(PS)
combined average: +5.7

magic

1986 +6.1(RS) +6.7
1987 +7.6 (RS) +10.7
1988 +5.1(RS) +8.3
1989 +6 (RS) +9.3
1990 +5.9(RS) +8.4
Average +6.1(RS), + 8.7 (PS)
combined average: +7.4

Magic has led not one, but two playoff offenses better than Bird's best(1987), and a third which scores just as high. And his creation looks "godly" for all those years. There is no reason to be applying a "best scoring year" filter here. The results very clearly favor Magic who also happens to have the best impact signals of anyone during that time period.

And then we get to the idea that the guy who won less and led worse offenses was more "portable"...
I can appreciate Bird's off ball ability, scalability, and gravity, which all shows itself in the team's stellar ORTG, both RS and PS.
.

But they weren't stellar. Lebron, Jordan, Magic, Curry, Shaq, and nash all led better rs offenses, better playoff offenses and better overall offenses. Reggie Miller's playoff offenses were comparable.

What is actually shown I think is that his strengths were not as valuable as people think they are and his weaknesses were more significant(ball-handling, rim-pressure, ect). Besides 1980, his teams holistic improvement with/drop-offs without are not remarkable among top 20 candidates which calls into question just how valuable this defense was.

Honestly I think we're seeing something pretty similar to what happens when people rate Durant based on what he looks like "on paper" because "tall, shoots, skilled passer". Bird is a better passer(to go with weaker scoring), but he does have apply significant rim pressure so you're not spiking perimeter threats. His "spacing" is not replicating what a Steph(or even Reggie) offers at that volume, and Bird, like Durant, is somewhat dependent on his teammates to score or creates because he does not have the prerequire handles.

People like to look at the aesthetics of how his passes look in his highlights, but how valuable is what's being generated?

iggymcfrack wrote:I didn't start watching basketball until 1994 so I didn't see Bird play live, but I really, really don't understand what's special about his passing at all. I don't get it. He averaged just over 6 assists a game in a very high pace league and from watching his highlight reels it seems like he never made a difficult pass in his life. Every single "highlight" is just a basic obvious pass to a guy 3 feet away that it seems like any high schooler would find. What makes him any better of a passer than say Jimmy Butler? I really don't understand.

Start with that.

Timing, accuracy. His touch passing, when he only has the ball for a fraction of a second and one-hands it to someone. No-lookers, the whole range of things which might impress someone with his positional awareness and technical passing acumen. Watch more Bird and pay specific attention to his passing. I don't want to be rude, your question is fair, especially for someone who never saw him live. But there are plenty of highlights which illustrate why the fanfare exists.

In this highlight reel, none of his first four passes create wide open looks. There are still defenders the recipients have to deal with up until pass #5. You have to wait till pass #8 to see another uncontested look. Pass #10 for the 3rd.

For comparison...

Magic's first 7 passes here create wide open looks. 9 of his first 12. You might also notice that alot of these passes come with Magic handling the ball in traffic, allowing Johnson to filter out defenders, before he makes the pass. In some of these Magic is also leveraging rim-pressure as defenders take themselves out of the play in anticipation of what he's going to at the basket.

Here is the result:

Whatever you think of their raw-passing, Magic creates more and creates higher-quality looks, while leading better offenses.

So does Lebron:

And if you think this is a matter of off-ball creation being undervalued...so does Steph:

So does Jordan:

You know who Bird looks comparable to? This guy:

For all the basketball discourse that presents ball-handling as a minor consideration(or an outright negative), the above charts(and the team-lvl offensive results and impact signals) track pretty closely to the degree of ball-handling primacy the players in question had.

Kevin Durant is a good passer. But he does not leverage that into good(for a superstar) creation.

Larry Bird is one of the greatest passers, but he only really leverages that towards good creation.

Kobe is not an all-time great passer, but he is a good passer, and maybe history's best tough shot-maker, and a strong primary ball-handler. The result is he can create as much as an all-time great passer like Bird.

I also think it's kind of telling what people want to give Larry in the build-a-player workshop...
Doctor MJ wrote:Did he actually have more "passing value" in his career as point guards who control the ball most of the time? Not if those guys were good at their job - as Paul was - but remember that he was playing with point guards (Tiny, DJ) whose job that was. If you were grooming Bird to play today I think you'd encourage him to play either like Magic or Jokic to max out his value, but the way he played back then showed how scary his potential was.

Sure. However, I do think it's important to recognize Jokic has a major advantage here besides "playing like a helio" and his shooting:

strength

Jokic is an all-time tough-shot maker, post-scorer, and post-creator because he is very hard to shake. Something even a guy you dubbed "nuevo-russell" struggled greatly to deal with last postseason. While he struggles to gain vertical seperation like Bird, you really can't bully him. Combine that with incredible touch and he maybe makes more shots that shouldn't go in than anyone else.

I also think it's worth noting the defensive benefit here. Up until this postseason I was assuming Jokic was a worse defender than Larry across time because he was a center who didn't protect the rim and wasn't that quick. In retrospect I think I overlooked some trade-offs:

1. Because of his overall size he can still be imposing for non-bigs trying to put it up(we saw this against the clippers in 2020)
2. Depending on the matchup he can bully other bigs on the defensive end. We saw this with AD to a degree and we saw a whole lot of it with Bam.

All considered I'd probably revise my assessment to something like this:
-> As Jokic is a center his limitations might hurt a team more
-> As Jokic is a center his strengths might benefit a team more

Bird might be easier to hide, but I also do not think he has the ability to positively impact his team's defense in the right contexts as Jokic can.

I would also say similar theoretical points could be made for Kobe. I do not think Kobe is actually a worse passer than say a James Harden. And I also do think he's a better ball-handler and a better shot-maker. But the way he was deployed(and the way players of that time period were encouraged to play), I do not think he was given the opportunity to show his full-range as a playmaker or creative force.

His oft-criticized shot selection(overly criticized imo) is largely a byproduct of the era, and I think his relative numbers look a fair-bit better if he played in a league where defenses were as hard-strung with how they could deploy doubles as they were in Bird's time:

Spoiler:
AEnigma wrote:People were always onto something about Kobe being a Jordan approximation, but now most have lost their sense of the extreme era disparities between the two. Prime Kobe would have had more attractive “numbers” in Jordan’s era, and Jordan would have much less attractive “numbers” in Kobe’s era.

Relatedly, scoring bias has ruined (hyperbolic) basketball discourse in a way not present in any other sport, which tend to be far more engaged with total offensive impact.

No, I am pointing out the effect of rule changes and league evolution. I recognise that a lot of people see Jordan win MVP and Finals MVP and RPOtY as a +1 rTS scorer and then extrapolate his peak as a +7 rTS scorer, but the ease for isolation wings was not consistent even before the explosion of the past couple of years.

Primarily efficiency (and then a resultant dip in raw point production) because I doubt he changes his shot volume. Kobe lacked Jordan’s peak athleticism and his mid-range acumen, so Jordan would still be a more efficient scorer than Kobe in basically any era, but the gap would not be +7 to +3.5 rTS. If Kobe is something like +5 in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and Jordan is something like +5.5 in the 2000s, that should substantially affect how we assess both of them, just like most of us recognise that Jerry West would not be a +9 scorer in later eras and adjust accordingly. None of that should be unpopular, but the bar is unfortunately quite low.

So with Kobe for me it’s more so I think he translates better to other eras than his own, or a player of his strengths translates better to other eras than his own.

I think the 2000s were the worst time as a high volume elite iso 1v1 perimeter player.

Defining it as 250+ isolations

05-10

2005
Of 22 players, he ranked 2nd

2006
Of 36 players, he ranked 12th

2007
Of 27 players, he ranked 1st

2008
Of 23 players, he ranked 2nd

2009
Of 33 players, he ranked 11th

2010
Of 29 players, he ranked 9th

Kobes volume was usually somewhere from 700-1000, so defining high volume as 250+ would be a bit unfair in terms of respecting his volume although that’s obvious

Overall, in regards to limiting it to high volume scorers, while he’s not first every year or anything this does end up as quite elite. Randoms or people you maybe wouldn’t expect end up being far higher than expected even with these restrictions on.

Under similar restrictions, in only pure effeciency, he grades out better than Kawhi through his 17-21 run, not quite as good as Durant the past few years, although comparable all things considered (Kobe peaked higher but was more inconsistent, Durant was more consistently 3-7 outside of a first place 2014 finish, Kawhi was similar to Kobe in terms of being great one year and not as great the next but his best years weren’t as high and his worst years were worse)

Overall his percentiles in these are quite good as well

In terms of pure effeciency, His 1v1 scoring as a whole could be seen somewhere inbetween kawhi and Durant, definately closer to Durant.

(1v1 scoring doesn’t imply when teams didn’t help or anything, so this would include when Kobe would take dumb shots into help and stuff)

I don’t think Kobe is inherently unable to be hyper effecient as an offense player because of him taking dumb shots. While I do agree he took a lot of stupid shots, for sure, I also think some of that is a function of isolation play in the 2000s in general.

Kobe was generally a very effecient player, but didn’t get as much of his in transition as guys like Lebron and Wade did. According to synergy, of players with 1250+ more scoring possessions (I did this to generally get the top 20-30 highest players by scoring possessions each year)

Kobe ranked

12 out of 17 in 2005
8 out of 27 in 2006
3 out of 19 in 2007
7 out of 33 in 2008
3 out of 27 in 2009
21 out of 29 in 2010

Which matches most data in him going up a tier 06-09 and dropping off a bit in 2005. 07 him having an issue of just refusing to pass, which shows up on the a post somewhere about him basically not passing out of iso that year

More interestingly though, looking at the data more carefully

In 06, 4th, 6th, and 7th place are guards (Ray has some seperation but he’s basically pretty close with arenas and redd)

In 07, he is only beaten by Dirk and amare

In 08, pierce beats him (although he has 2/3s the volume) and everyone else is a big

In 09, gasol and Dirk beat him out (although he and Dirk are in a virtual tie)

There are very obvious caveats to this for sure, but as a whole Kobe was a very effecient scorer, while he did most of his work in the halfcourt, he did also grade out well in transition, and the Lakers were a good transition team in general which fits with his offensive impact being as high as it was during his prime

I’m rambling a bit but my main point is that I think kobes offense is seen as, high volume but not too elite effeciency wise, whereas I think he did combine the best of both worlds as much as a perimeter player in the 2000s could.

The reason I’m harping on halfcourt vs transition is, I think that the two things you have to look at are

Does a players presence mean easier shots are being taken (for example, lebrons presence means more transition opportunities so that’s a plus)

Kobes presence didn’t seem to detract from his team’s transition opportunities (given his teams ranking in that regard were decent in 08 and 09) and he only didn’t have much of them in comparison to Wade and lebron, he had a good amount of them and was very good at that as well

I guess a similar comparison would be hitting threes at a 42% rate on tough shots vs them at a 45% rate on wide open ones?

This isn’t to say he was just as effecient as lebron in 09 or anything, of course not, but I think it’s a situation where he’s shooting well on contested threes, and in terms of the halfcourt vs transition situation.

A way to see it would be, he’s taking a tougher role on offense (a more halfcourt dominant role) and doing so at a very effecient rate within that role throughout his prime.

Taking the harder role doesn’t mean the easier role that leads to more effecient shots is inherently limited, but it does mean his expected fg% will be lower, despite it not being a negative impact, does that make sense idk if I’m explaining my thoughts well here

Could he have been even more effecient if he didn’t take dumb shots at times? Sure, but I don’t think he wasn’t substantially more effecient than his peers.

Furthermore, I do think that illegal D>hand checking in terms of impact it had on iso perimeter players, at least in kobes case, and obviously their offense didn’t exactly evolve, so I don’t think it’s inherently impossible for Kobe to be an outlier effecient player under the right circumstances or era.

His shot selection could be better, but I do think part of that is a product of the teams offense as well, and he was very effecient in spite of it overall given the role he had.

In 2013 for example, the team ran a bit more of a pick and roll offense, although it wasn’t really one because of all the Dwight drama, and Kobe did flourish much more after having dropped off offensively for awhile. There’s more too it than that of course but still, that he got to the paint as much as he did in his prime and was as effecient as he was in his prime after the seasons leading up to it makes me think 06-09 Kobe in 2013 kobes position probably ends up as a super high raw effeciency volume type player.

In short, Kobe looks alot more efficient relative to the field when you adjust for shot-quality and his difficult slate of shots was partially a product of schematic deployment and playing in the 2000's. In a league more suited for post-play and 1v1 scoring, I think Kobe looks alot better. I also think in the current league the chance to "helio" may make up for whatever disadvantages there are to be had playing against more talented players.

I would also have less questions about how his defense translates compared to Bird in basically any era and I feel if we are doing the time-machine thing(I know you are not Doc), Kobe is the "historic" guy I think stands to benefit the most.

Regardless, for the purpose of this project, I'm nominating Kobe(and will plan on voting him in fairly soon) on the basis of what he did in his time. Simply put, I do not buy Kobe was clearly worse than a guy like Bird(honestly I'm leaning towards better considering the playoffs), and even if he was, his accumulated value was almost certainly higher. Kobe is not considered an a-grade offensive engine, yet Bird is and I really don't get what justifies his inclusion.

We can talk about unselfish this and infectious that but nba-history has been pretty cut and dry about how it all adds up:

-> if you want to lead the best offenses ever, control everything and minimize variance
-> if you want to lead offenses that aren't the best ever, don't hold up so well in the playoffs, and only produce great results in specific contexts...delegate to teammates who might **** something up

It does look like Kobe will be admitted into the pool next thread, so I am curious if people will be more open to assessing Kobe more favorably than before. I think there's more here to unpack than "shaq's sidekick" and "his rapm is bad"(ironically comparable to Shaq's in Cheema's), so I'm looking forward to seeing what people have to say about Mr. Mamba

Not had much time to post here but if i had to pick someone it would be

Magic johnson (#8)

Goat level offense with a skillset that would translate seamlessly across eras, able to grind it out in a slow game and the post as much as on the fast pace heliocentric era. Able to leas offensively dominant teams that stayed that way in the playoffs, ans what limited plus minus data we have of him is fairly damn crazy

Biggest winner is of course longevity and not being a strong defender, but i cannot think of many longevity titans who i would take over magic 12 years if i was starting a team.

I see thw latw 0's/early 10's range as fairly interchangeable here with the likes bird, shaq, curry, oscar, kobe, garnett, dirk. And cam be swayed to take some of those over him.

Will try to do a more in depth post and maybe add am alternate after i have more time to think on this

Would be very curious if there was a way to incorperate indirect stuff(rockets before drafting hakeem, bulls before drafting Jordan, ect), great work though!

Oh, got it; I interpreted “print out” in an odd way.

I should have phrased that more carefully; I meant leave players unranked without a certain threshold of games, without taking away their data, but that is probably an unnecessary concern when most people will be able to self-filter accordingly.

Are the excised rankings just players who played too few minutes to come across as notable? Might be appropriate to set a certain minimum games played threshold; I notice top rookies seem to do inordinately well.

Thanks! I might make a separate post at some stage once I have more data to share.

As far as the players listed, I've only included the ones who won awards within this timeframe just for simplicity (and character limits). If I made the data more public, I'd include everyone.

These figures will place an extraordinary amount of weight on players who miss some seasons within the window, so not only rookies, but players whose careers end as well.

Would be very curious if there was a way to incorperate indirect stuff(rockets before drafting hakeem, bulls before drafting Jordan, ect), great work though!

That is exactly what he did lol. Otherwise there is no real “without” sample for a lot of these rookies.

Why would it matter in the slightest whether a player's skillset would translate across eras. Different situations within their own era (portability) is a different and at least potentially viable question. But not whether Stephen Curry's 3 point shooting would matter in the NBA in the 70s, or whether a George Mikan could be a star today in the pace and space era (though no one who makes comments like this ever translates the other way).

If they were dominant in their own era, more so than a player who has a skillset that would play better today (Alex English v. Dale Ellis for example), they were better and more valuable. Looking at the strength of the era is legitimate; rating everyone based on how they might play with a set of rules and assumptions that didn't exist at the time is not.

The nature of considering player circumstances already opens us up to considering circumstances of time. That is not unusual or prohibited by the rules as far as I can tell. Many people brought up that Wilt and Russell had comparatively disproportionate defensive impact in their era without comment.

EDIT: You had nearly this exact conversation with the current project-runner back in 2020.

I refuse to do this, in either direction. What matters is how strongly he impacted his era (and of course, how strong that era was).

I'm not saying anyone else has to think in these terms, but for reasons that I've gone into, I often find it hard to avoid.

Yeah, this method essentially treats these 5-year windows as single "seasons" with lots of transactions and missingness for players who didn't play in all 5 of those years. For example, the 1983-1987 window would treat Hakeem as a mid-season signing once we get to the 1984-85 part of the "season", and treat George Gervin as an "injury" during the 1986-87 portion of the "season".

Some of the pros of this approach are that we get the impact of rookies, players changing teams between seasons, and retirements. Some of the cons are that it more or less assumes constant quality of the players across the 5-year window.

If I get around to publishing it, though, I would be posting other periods as well --- it's easily generalizable to 1-year periods, 3-year windows, 5-year windows, and so forth.

Agree with AEnigma—this is a Hall of Fame post, and I really do hope you make it into a separate thread that we can then sticky. I am really impressed with Magic Johnson and the little pieces of data that we have make him look like an impact titan, maybe at the very top of the pre-data about era. I always assumed that Larry Bird’s impact profile would look stronger given his defensive motor and his strong defense of rebounding, especially for contested rebounds and with complete data it might still, but looks like we may have some clear separation between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

Also nice to see one of my favorite players from the 1980s, Paul Pressey, looking really good in this dataset, matching some of that gaudy two-way BPM numbers he has during that Milwaukee Bucks core run.

Voting Post

I'll keep this short and sweet as I keep coming up against the deadline. As always, this is a good set of candidates and it's not easy to pick among them. All have reasonable arguments here. I'm voting Magic Johnson as he seems to measure up across the board using traditional, box-score based, or WOWY-esque stats quite strongly. I know we can't directly compare him with +/- titans like KG and Steph, but everything points to Magic being a high-impact superstar for 12 straight years from 1980-1991 (with the 1981 season being limited by injury). And although he had great teammates throughout that time, I think his offensive mastery and consistent drive for success extended Kareem's career significantly and elevated players like James Worthy and Byron Scott beyond what they may have otherwise achieved. Bird has a fair amount of similarities here, but his profile tends to look a bit worse and less robust to the postseason.

Shaq and KG likewise have careers that largely overlapped. KG certainly has a +/- edge, while Shaq has a notable box score edge. Neither of these are precise measurements, of course, but they point to a distinction between the two, with Shaq dominating the game in ways that are reflected in box scores and KG serving as the glue that keeps teams functional by doing everything in between. I obviously can't fault KG's lack of team success in comparison to Shaq given the different circumstances of their teams. That said, in an era where points were at an ultimate premium, I can't help but feel that Shaq's bulldozer dominance in the paint had outsized influence. Lots of great points have been written over the years in regard to him not maximizing his potential, which I agree with on many fronts, but he still impacted the game massively and collapsed opposing defenses in a way that I hadn't seen before or since in my 35+ years of watching the game. I prefer KG as a personality and as a player, but I'm not sure I can convince myself that he could yield the same performance in Shaq's situation. It's a tough choice here, but my gut says Shaq for now.

Curry is harder for me to reconcile. My feeling is that judging regular season performance alone would have him at the top of this set of nominees (and possibly a few who have already been enshrined in our list). And although he routinely torched my beloved Blazers postseason after postseason, other teams tended to find ways to limit him more effectively in the playoffs. Furthermore, it's hard for me to reconcile the post-KD Warriors. Curry and Draymond being such outlierish +/- kings couldn't manage a playoff run in 2021, yet with Klay back in the lineup for part of the season, they titled in 2022 despite significantly more missed games by Steph and Draymond. I'll have to read through to see if something can help explain these disparate outcomes. I'm open to voting for Curry soon, but I can't put him over Magic.

I'll continue to ring the bell for George Mikan to be nominated, even if he likely won't be for quite some time. The sustained in-era individual and team dominance he achieved is worthy of consideration. I've got Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Dr. J, and Kobe on my radar for nomination as well.

I loved watching Paul Pressey in those days. Such an underrated player in my view. He's my go-to player to name as the best player in history who never made an All-Star game.

Pressey was so good on both ends of the floor. It's a crime he never got voted in the all-star game in the same era when players like Otis Birdsong, Rolando Blackman or Jeff Malone got in. Not to mention that he was significantly better player than his own teammate - Cummings - who was voted in the all-star game as well.

So smooth playing under control with that incredible length. His release point on his jumpers might be one of the highest that we’ve ever seen for a wing. He was also such a creative passer, and had some really fun stuff in transition. You are right about the travesty of such inferior players, making the All-Star game ahead of him. I would say that only Arvydas Sabonis was definitely a player who was better than Paul Pressey who also didn’t make an All-Star team. Maybe Lamar Odom as well.

That 1981-1986 Bucks’ run might be the best 6 year run ever that didn’t result in a Finals appearance. They just couldn’t beat the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics.

21 vs 22

I think its not about Klay or how many games played Curry and Green. The main reasons GSW were successful are:

1. No Wiseman/Oubre/Paschall in 2022.

Curry/Green/Wiggs w/o Wiseman/Oubre in 572min +14.7nrtg (2021)

Wiseman -10.2 nrtg
Oubre -5.3 nrtg
Paschall -6.7 nrtg

2. Poole became a strong starting player. Compared to last year's stay at the Gleague, this is a big change.
3. Role players Porter/Bjelica/Payton over Baze/Wisemann/Paschall

These numbers tell us everything we need to know.

Stephen Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green + James Wiseman -12.0 nrtg
Stephen Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green + Kevon Looney +12.2 nrtg

Stephen Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green + James Wiseman, Kelly Oubre -13.9 nrtg
Stephen Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green w/o James Wiseman, Kelly Oubre +14.73nrtg

Kerr is all time HC, but these experiments with Wiseman in 2021 and young players as second unit in 2023 are mind blowing from bad side

These values make use of all games (regular season and playoffs) and all players who averaged at least 18 MPG for the season. I'll print out the results for 5-year spans over Magic's career for players who won at least one award (All-Star, All-NBA, All-Defense) during that span.

Wanted to put another voice toward saying I’d be very interested in seeing the results of this project.

Question for clarification - are you running each 5 year regression individually, or running a bigger one across the 80s and applying it to 5 year windows? (So are the box-score variable estimates the same in each one, or changing).
I bought a boat.

This data is worth less than +/- data in that it only accounts for game data as opposed to play-by-play data, so bear that in mind. That said, Magic being at or near the top throughout this entire period does support the notion that he was an impact giant in his own right.
Very cool stuff! Do you have a Github? Would be very interested to know how you are regressing box-score stats on WOWY. Is it season total box-score or per game (average) stats, similar to basketball-reference BPM calculation? What is the WOWY dataset that is being used?

Also, #107 Michael Jordan: 1.929 for 1987-1991 Regressed WOWY, what do you make of this?
