Hi Doctor MJ,
Are we allowed to discuss league depth/league quality here across eras? I don't want to derail the thread, but, I think it certainly bears looking at, as hard and as nuanced as is possible.
Thanks.
Certainly. Just keep in mind that it's up to each participant to decide both what they think the quality of a league is and how to factor that in.

It's my current belief that the 1970's was a weak decade, comparatively. You had the ABA with ~25% of the best players in the NBA by the mid 70's, and, the league expanding from 9 teams in 65'-66'' to 22 in 76'-77'. There's just no way, that I can envision, that basketball expanded as much in popularity, scope, player development and recruitment in 12 years to keep up with that kind of drastic expansion.'
Here's how expansion teams fared their first 5 season in the league:

What are people's thoughts on the topic of expansion and league depth/quality?
I don't think I disagree with your general assessment of the '70s.

General rule is that now that the project has been going, I want to see people participate for a thread before I consider adding them.
So please participate in thread #5 without doing explicit voting. With quality thought, I'll add you after that.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Cheers,
Doc

Not going to derail the voting thread with this, but really hard to keep up interest when people treat the project as an excuse to advance personal grudges against players (or otherwise impute personal grudges with specific posters onto players).
Quote him if you believe that, and if you cannot be bothered to read his walls of text (in a top 100 project????) to check whether he actually made the claim, then what does that say about you.
One_and_Done wrote:AEnigma wrote:One_and_Done wrote:Well, the Hakeem crowd seem to think he was just as good in 1991 and before, so it matters. If they think there was only a slight or nil improvement in post 1991 Hakeem's play then that's an issue in a comparison vs Magic.
Discussion would be a lot easier if you were not so insistent on making up things no one said.
As a helpful tip, if you cannot come up with a source for the stance you are imparting onto people, you probably should reassess your perception of the stance. I thought that Duncan being admitted would make you quit doing this, but evidently not.
Ask f4p if he thinks Hakeem got better in 93 onwards. I think his walls of text make it very clear that is not his position.

I know he said that. He's said it many times. I'm not speculating. I know that to be his position because he has written walls of text about it, and I read and replied to them.

Saying his postseason numbers were comparably impressive is in no way the same as saying 1993-95 was not any step up.

Tremendous amount of great discussion in this project so far with an incredible amount of information posted. In the 2020 top 100 project, most of the discussion threads had fewer responses other than the number one thread, which mostly just had many responses after the voting from some disgruntled posters. #10 through #15 is going to be incredible.

#2 Kareem, 12 pages

Yeah. I’m very intrigued at what’s to come with the larger integration of perimeter players (Bird Curry Kobe Oscar West) into the nominee pool.

A good listen, as it pertains to Oscar V West. Am really hoping that TB drops “offensive legend” videos for those two (same series as the recent Wilt video) as they gain more circulation in this project.

#7 and # 8 had 12 pages.
Interesting the #5 vote was this project's nadir. I guess much of the duncan argumentation had run it's course in thread #3 and #4. Would not expect #6 to be the 2nd longest thread but I guess it featured the biggest "upset" so to speak, so I guess it makes sense

I think with how much separation Duncan got as a candidate for 5 and that, to my knowledge, serving as the largest landslide of a vote thus-far.. such a trend isn’t striking me as too shocked.

Moving this here because it bogs down conversation.
Are you okay? You used to be a great poster not even a year ago and now you are talking about fanboys and nuthuggers. Re-think how you want to engage with this site because if you want to use comments like currChoke, fanboys and nuthuggers, then this board probably isn't the place for you to engage with.

All of Curry "longevity" is actually from this era. Inflated era.
Magic was clearly better at peak, prime ect. Its not so close actually. Even if we assume that Curry at his peak and prime (15-19) was 95% as good as Magic (87-91), which I dont think is the case, 90% more likely, I dont think its enough for curry to surpass Magic with 2021-23 "longevity" in the inflated era. And this assuming we take additive approach, which I dont use in GOAT conversations, because In this case Oscar also is better than Curry and Magic.
I like holistic approach, where Peak and prime weighted significantly more than longevity without titles, much impact and in the inflated era. Basically who was the best at their best, when they "dominated" the league.
This server consists of huge amount of Curry fanboys and nuthuggers, its obvious (you are not one of them), so its nonsentical to talk with them, its my last message in this thread, but I just admit, that all the people, casual and analytical minds, more or less have consencus who is the GOAT PG. And its not currChoke
