I forgot about Gamepass. You can keep the game as long as you have an active subscription, right? That might be something to check out, but I'm not sure I'll game on my PC often enough to get my money's worth. Good call though guys, thanks.

And there is currently a $1 for 1 month deal going on for PC Game Pass

Pretty sure that’s always available for new users

It was removed for a period, and they re-introduced it after the price changes.

Happy Baldur’s Gate 3 day! Reminder, Larian suggests a clean install once the full build is available (some weird rules with preloading and how early access works on Steam), so at 10am you should download the game.

Also, recommended to delete your EA files from the client before uninstalling to prompt them to be deleted from the cloud, too.

Happy rolling guys!! I still don’t know if I’m playing the shadow monk or a gloom stalker. Might be a gametime decision and wouldn’t be surprised if I reroll to try both.

Coming from a lot of traditional fifth edition experience, Gloom Stalker is very strong. Monk is usually very underwhelming and weak, generally seen as a bottom three class option (it’s a very multi attribute dependent, or MAD for short, class) before considering subclasses. That said, it might be way different when you account for all the system and class changes made to translate 5e to a video game.

Here’s my two cents: If you’re playing the game solo, pick one of Bard, Paladin, Sorcerer, or Warlock. Why? They’re the four classes where Charisma is their strongest stat, and if you’re playing solo you’re likely going to be the face of your party doing all the talking with NPCs.

I'll definitely play a bard on a playthrough. I had a blast in EA, and I love the fantasy around it from an RP perspective. Traditionally in old D&D games, Skald was one of my favorite classes. But the shadow monk looks way too slick to not try, and the Gloom Stalker sounds like it matches what is effectively my go-to in any RPG where I have such choice. Gimme a stealthy wood elf with a bow all day everyday.

Who I have talk isn't of great importance to me, though. I anticipate switching it up based on the situation, and whatever happens happens. I don't want to be pigeonholed in character creation by it.

Debating Oath of Ancients paladin or Gloomstalker ranger/Assassin rogue multiclass to start. I found the ranged rogue companion to be pretty powerful in the early access. Was getting sneak attack all over the place.

I'm going in blind and will pick whatever sounds the most fun to me. Will be firing it up on the Steam Deck too.

All my life. Used to play MUDs as a wee lad then went to UO, EverQuest, Asheron's Call, etc. etc. For current MMOs, it really depends on what you're looking for. FFXIV does storytelling the best but I think WoW still beats it in terms of dungeons and raiding. GW2 is also pretty decent.
UO FOR LIFE!

**** GOAT MMO.

What era did you play? I played Renaissance heavily as a teen. I've looked into the free clients here and there over the years, but everything is PK-centric which is not my cup of tea.

I absolutely loved that game, though.
I was on the Great Lakes server circa: 1999-2002 for the majority of my playing.

One of my best friends was a top ranked PvPer for a very long time on that server. My computer was trash, so I was usually just along for the ride.

UO had damn near everything an MMO lover could ask for and so much of it has never even been attempted to be replicated.

How has no Housing system ever tried to do what UO did? Unbelievable.

Thanks for the heads up!

I got in. They had some major problems all last night that caused the servers to be down. I also played some of the last stress test, so have some thoughts but want to see if anything is majorly different with the latest closed beta.

We had overlap for sure. I played Great Lakes 2000-2002 or so. I bounced off of Third Dawn and stayed in Renaissance - don't recall if the worlds were fractured between expansions or not. I had a 2x GM blacksmith (smithing and mining), a 3x GM fighter, and I spent forever working on a mage but never GM'd.

Lots of good memories of that game.

Have, like, 4 groups of friends I'll be working on asynchronous campaigns on for BG3 so I get to try a bunch of different classes, but just did an Old God Warlock for my solo. I liked D:OS and D:OSII but they were super overwhelming and I never made it much past the first town. This game is already 10x more up my alley. Really excited to keep going.

Mage was very hard to GM. "corp por", "corp por", "corp por"
I think I also had a Great Lakes character but if I remember correctly spent most of my time on Sonoma. Played through the Second Age but I'm not sure if I made it to the third expansion.

I played BG3 a bit over lunch, but I ran into some bug where you can't save. Now I've just got the game running hoping there's some fix I can figure out after work so I don't have to start over. Anyone encounter this?

Apparently there was no solution and there's no response from Larian yet that I could find.

If anyone else runs into it, here's what I did to seemingly fix it:
1. Before exiting the game, go into Options and disable Larian's Cross Sync.
2. Exit the game and lose your progress
3. On the game's Steam Settings page, disable Cloud Sync, then re-enable Cloud Sync.
4. Go into your Local App files and delete the entire BG3 folder. I think it's users>App Data>Local>Larian Studios>Baldur's Gate 3.
5. Restart the game normally.
6. Create a dummy character to make sure you can now save.
7a. Assuming you can save, exit to main menu and restart your actual playthrough.
7b. Assuming you cannot save still, I have no idea :)

Note that this appears to preserve Steam's Cloud Sync so you have save portability between computers, but Larian's cross save being off will mean you will not have save portability between PC and PS5 (but presumably they fix it well before PS5 launches).

I loved D:OS II. Is BG3 basically the same type of game?

Shadow Monk is bananas. This is the most powerful I've felt compared to the builds I played in EA. I am straight-up wrecking things. I am tentatively planning to single-dip into Rogue/Thief to pickup that extra bonus action.

Happy you guys have a good one and a bit jealous. If the console version was coming out today I might have jumped on board, but I don't think the genre is for me and I'm probably saving money.
