Well, it took Haaland a whole 3 minutes to open his goal account for the new season.

I’m not watching because I’m out currently but it’ll be interesting to see how Burnley’s style of play translates in the Prem.

Burnley have been really brave and aggressive. Probably played a little better than City in the first half.
But, as I say this, Haaland puts in his second. A ridiculous first time finish on his left foot that cascaded in high off the bar. That's the reality of the Premier League.

Burley was in the PL just a couple of seasons ago weren't they?
Then relegated and they got promoted right away?
According to Wikipedia, Burnley has a population of under 75k.
So all the PL clubs get comparable TV money for PL broadcasts but the bigger clubs have way more revenues because bigger stadiums, probably much higher ticket prices, much greater revenues from kit sales and other merchandise licensing.
What are the other revenues sources that PL teams tap into? Well if they play in the UCL or Europa, again more TV money.
There's no salary cap and payroll figures don't seem to be published.
Big city clubs are rarely in danger of relegation. Instead, disappointment might be no UCL or Europa League money, like Tottenham this year. But they have a huge new stadium and a huge, avid following so they will make a lot of money from matches and merchandising, including a lot of sales to fans overseas.
They just sold their leading scorer, of all time. Their chances of being relegated this season or next are not zero but should be fairly low. They bought other players and will keep buying more. They're more likely to win a place for Europa or UCL next season than being relegated.
So how does a small-city club like Burney and some of the others sustain a place in the PL, competing against clubs based in London, Manchester, Liverpool, etc.?
There has to be pretty high correlation between revenues and wins, payroll and wins, etc.

Classic in the making between Newcastle and Villa. 2-1 already, two debutant goals, one for Tonali and one for Diaby.

Newcastle's quality shines through. Guimarães and Tonali are a great pairing. Villa, meanwhile, need two new fullbacks.
It's time for 5 refs.

You have to think this is a warning shot to the rest of the league. Newcastle look serious.

Had to watch for tielemans and Barnes, surprised neither started. Youri did nothing after coming on. Barnes tore Villa apart.
Isak was great as were a number of Newc players. Thought Diabbé was exceptional too.

Re: 2023-24 English Premier League Discussion Thread
Thoughts on Spurs' first game:
- Bissouma and Maddison look like a strong duo in midfield, Maddison got two assists
- A bit open and vulnerable to counter attacks, as expected, Brentford played very threatening diagonals that we didn't know how to deal with
- Destiny Udogie is going to be a good player
- Ref had a bit of a mare, dishing out yellow cards for nothing
- Brentford's goalie Flekken looks good, Vicario a bit shakier at the other end
All things considered, good result away from home. Lots of debut performances, new system, new coach, no Kane. Lots to build from.

The penalty which resulted in the first Brenford goal (via PK) was marginal.

Yeah, Son caught him with his trailing leg but it looked like incidental contact. I've seen those given and not given. Didn't constitute a clear and obvious error, imo.

Nervy game at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool's midfield still a huge issue, very easy to play through. The Gakpo as an 8 experiment not off to a promising start. Salah absolutely fuming when he was subbed off. Finishing still an issue for Chelsea.
It's time for 5 refs.
