Knicks still need to decide whether to extend IQ before the season.

Fred Katz has an update amidst a broader look at the team, where he deduces who’s most likely to be dealt:

The Knicks have discussed Quickley in trades this summer, league sources told The Athletic, though objectives have changed since last autumn when they were on the prowl for a first-round pick in exchange for the guard. After a second-place finish in the NBA Sixth Man of the Year voting, the price is higher. They don’t want to take a step back after a 47-win campaign, either.

Whether the Knicks want to leave their options open or the two sides are far apart on salary, these moments force organizations to make decisions on players. Meanwhile, Grimes won’t be in this position until next summer.

So there’s our three: Barrett, Fournier and Quickley.

Quickley still easily number one on the short list

Is this for real?
Dealing with people who exhibit the "smartest person in the room" syndrome can be a challenge. One approach is to listen their opinion while also encouraging open-mindedness. It's important to create an environment where all voices are valued.

Thinking about what the Knicks would really want for him.

If they don't deal him before the season starts the plan appears to be to have Hart play SF and then be the primary backup PF. He's undersized for either position but Katz thinks it only becomes a serious issue if Randle gets hurt.

They absolutely could decide to pass on extending IQ but keep him until closer to the deadline to see if they can use him in a package if the right star comes available. But I could also see them wanting a piece that'd be a better fit outside their crowded backcourt in the short run and not a flight risk in the medium term.

Challenge is they won't want to deplete their star-trade package.

Don't really think Quickley factors into any star player trade package if the issue is pricing. The extension deadline on rookie contract players isn't until October, and if you wanna maximize his trade value, you'd definitely wanna deal him before that (see: Grayson trade in 2021). Especially with how well Grimes played last season, it 100% makes sense that the Knicks feel they'll find themselves in a "too many mouths to feed" situation after they committed big money to all of Brunson, Donte, and Hart.

As far as trade partners go, they likely don't wanna take on any extra money because they're just a shade under the luxury tax as is (~$4 milllion), so if we're talking about value, I think any trade involving Grayson or Bobby is DOA unless we're taking salary back. So with that caveat, do you say yes to Marjon + a 2029 unprotected 1st or pick swap?

I say yes to that.

Gets us younger and could be the 4th "star" we're looking for. 29 first hurts obviously, but you have to give to get.

Fournier would be very pissed if the Knicks don't trade him and keep him glued to the bench in his contract year.

Playing with 3 way scenarios where we get IQ.

“I would be very surprised to be a Knick next year. They pay me 18 million, they have no interest in keeping me,” he said. “If you want to trade me with a good return, why didn’t you use me? I was coming out of a season where I was the fourth-best 3-point shooter in the league. Why not take advantage of it?”

And Fournier’s relationship with Tom Thibodeau.

“I have nothing to say because I have none,” Fournier said... “When he took me out of the five, he just told me he was going to try something else. Then at the first match of a road trip, he announced to me that I was leaving the rotation, and ciao.”

I don't think the Knicks wanna devalue any Quickley trade by attaching Fournier though so that's kinda the problem. Otherwise who here wouldn't immediately do something like Grayson/Bobby for Quickley/Fournier without having to include a future first or swap? I know I would.

Count me in on your previous MJB+1st for Quickley, as it allows us to keep Bobby/Pat to really go for it this year.

Another avenue might be finding a 3rd team for Bobby, like OKC or SAC, who might re-route picks to NYK. Not sure anyone would give a decent 1st for him but I'd try.

I was mostly joking about Harden for Midds, but I'd say if there was an offer on the table for a straight swap between the two, it's at least a genuine conversation in the front office.

Harden has his warts, we've all seen them: he's out of shape, can't play D, is a perennial playoff choker, and seems to like requesting trades as much as he likes making it rain at strip clubs.

But he's still a good player. He's not close to an MVP level dude anymore but he's still around that top 30 type guy. Put up 20/6/11 last year with the 6ers on great efficiency. He'd easily be the best playmaking guard Giannis has played with and would get him a lot of easy buckets. Our defence is elite enough to cover he deficiencies.

I love Midds and what he has given the Bucks, but it's hard to know what he's got left in the tank as a high level guy. Series vs the Heat was encouraging but the injuries are piling up and he def feels like a guy who's on the downward slide of his career.

Ultimately Harden is a bit of a dick so you prob don't do it, but I think it's worth considering. There aren't many deals out there where we could get a better player back for Midds, but the Harden one might actually deliver that.
