Ranking Top 12 Seasons between Prime Giannis and Wade

Post#1 » by rk2023 » Thu Aug 17, 2023 5:53 pm

I've seen Giannis get some nominations in the T-100 project and none for Wade thus-far. Both would be in my mid-high 20s in a career sense at the moment - I would reckon. Last summer, I remember a conversation with a friend on this Forum whom mentioned Wade without knee injuries very well could have been on a Giannis-like prime arc. So with that, how would you all rank the best prime seasons between 05-12 Wade (08 omitted, for obvious reasons) and 17-23 Giannis?

Why is 2019 Giannis so low?

Bucks easily win the championship in 2019 if his teammates shoot 30% from 3 against Toronto.

A similar thing could be said about the season Wade put together in 05 had he not missed a game with his shoulder injury.
It's below 2020 to me, as his regular season in 2020 I would argue was better on both ends as his rebounding, shooting and defensive effort rose with a similar caliber postseason. As for most of the other seasons above, there is a gap in postseason performance.

Compare 2019 to 2022.

2019 Giannis is more efficient in the regular season, plays more minutes, and he has 50% more +/-, More Stocks, Higher DWS/DBPM [Bigger Defensive footprint].

Then, in the post-season he cruises through the 1st 2 rounds only to run up against one of the best defensive teams of the 21st century in Toronto where they lose the entire series [4-2] by a grand total of 1 MOV as Lopez/Middleton/Bledsoe/Brogdon/Hill/Mirotic shoot a whopping 26% from 3P on 177 3PA.

They win the series is Bledsoe shoots 20% from 3 [He shot 17% from 3P].

I get a similar story happened in 2022 but the Raptors Defense in the post-season was remarkable.

2019 Giannis definitely had a better RS, but I am not convinced that he is a better player than 2022 Giannis. I mostly say this, as I think 2022 Giannis can pretty much do everything 2019 Giannis can do, except, I think he is definitely a better shooter, which gives him a legitimate counter.

Giannis was at 36% from the midrange in 2019 versus 40.8% in 2022.

Basically Giannis last 5 seasons are on top. The you debate if Giannis has the 6th best season too. Probably not, but the 6th spot is where the discussion begins.

2021 Giannis
2022 Giannis
2020 Giannis
2006 Wade
2019 Giannis
2009 Wade
2023 Giannis
2010 Wade
2011 Wade
2018 Giannis
2005 Wade
2017 Giannis

I don't really see much of a "peak" case for Wade over Giannis any longer. Any argument against has to rely pretty heavily on Wade's '06 playoff run and Finals, but Giannis put together arguably the greatest statistical Finals series (35/13/5 on 66% TS) since the merger, so even claiming that Wade has a leg up on him as a postseason resilience guy (debatable at best) that's not a very compelling counterpoint to Giannis' already substantial edge in RS impact.

LOL, no way. Stop. 2023 Giannis was weak as hell. Meh impact numbers all through the season, limited defensive effort, and then he gets hurt in Round 1 and plays like **** the whole series. That’s not close to peak Wade.

How I'd break it down in tiers:

- 2022/21 Giannis, 2009 Wade
- 2020/19 Giannis, 2006/10 Wade
- 2011 Wade, 2023 Giannis
- 2018 Giannis, 2007 Wade (injured), 2005 Wade

Some of us look at more than impact #s.
