If true he'd likely go to jail right? What a sad ending to such a promising career.

Also the Rays would be absolutely wrecked for the next decade. He's on the books until 2032 for what would basically be over 1/3 over their payroll, for a guy who won't even play for them. Absolutely insane

I was driving most of yesterday so I've only seen the jokes about it online/the hat thing. I think I found some of the initial posts showing pictures with him and the girl.

Is that "it" ? I say "it" in quotes, because while I think it's bad and he's done for at least a very long time if true with the Rays/MLB, probably forever...while I have no idea what other evidence there may be, it's probably one of those things where jail may be hard to prove - but I'm also not a legal expert. Just seems like one of those things where he hires some expensive attorneys, gets off on lack of evidence/settlement, plays in Japan or something (if all of this is true).

Rich privileged professional high paid pro athlete will buy his way out It like they normally do , some team will sign him because they think he paid his dues or whatever . If your any kind of decent person , who would want to play with him ? If this true !

:o This has got to be one of the fastest investigations I can remember in the sports world. I am guessing that expediency does not bode well for his future prospects.

Two disclaimers:

1. I get it that you kind of throw the rebuild logic out the window a little bit because realistically you shouldn't punt in your last Ohtani year even though you're probably dead. Their deadline was very stupid from a baseball standpoint but from a business standpoint was...fine.
2. I generally am cool with service time not being manipulated and maybe I don't fully understand here because otherwise this is one case where the team is stupid to do this.

Why would you not let him marinate in the minors until May? I think they are burning a year of service time to continue to chase a less than 1% chance to make the playoffs.

This has been the Angels MO for the whole last year. If you're in the system and the team believes in any remote chance you can help the big club, you're getting called up.

Yeah that's fine - and they must either think they are signing Ohtani again and will try for one last 3 year window where they take this group of callups + Ohtani/Trout + more money spent.

But if that isn't the case then they are probably tacking an extra year on to their rebuild by deflating the value of some of their prospects via trade in a few years or making it so these guys will be leaving in free agency soon after in 4 years when the scorched earth rebuild is hopefully complete.

My guess is no one there thinks they're still gonna be employed by the Angels in four years.

Fangraphs on the Padres:

As gloomy as the season feels right now, there are still legitimate reasons to think the Padres are a good baseball team. Their 68–54 Pythagorean record is 10 wins above their actual record, and records derived from run differential are more predictive than win-loss record. The projections all still agree there’s a lot to like and similarly have a good record, relatively speaking, of predicting the future.

Oh, word? Because I'm looking at the standings and I'm predicting that they're going to miss out on the playoffs.

If he hits in AA he'll be the #1 prospect in baseball at end of the year. Granted he didn't exactly hit in his 9 games at A+

He's only in AA because the Padres are doing a thing where they're keeping the same class of prospects on the same team.

That is an incredibly brutal thing to happen a month and half before you're literally about make close to a billion dollars in free agency.

Yeah, I wonder how many hundreds of millions he may have just cost himself if he has to have his 2nd TJ.
