Given the attention this has been getting we should expect a few ‘leaks’ in the next few weeks that don’t paint Lance in the best light. The irony is that if Brock does prove to be another flash in the pan, Trey’s presence on the team gave us an obvious new direction to move forward with. Instead we have a Shanahan vanity project to fall back on.

Trey has by all accounts been a great teammate, and their inexplicable sudden need to name Sam ****ing Darnold as back-up (just a day after pointing out the lack of need to name anyone, let alone this early) seems to be a decision with huge downside and almost no upside. Just can’t figure out what they were thinking. Seems like a crisis of their own invention to resolve a bad situation of their own invention. When it appeared they were in the ‘if someone blows us away but otherwise we’re good’ frame of mind I thought that was at least making the best of the situation, but this, a late 4th rounder, just…wtf…the entirety of our team’s upside now rests on how much better Brock can get.

Edit: one content provider pointed out that when speaking of Trey early this offseason Kyle said quarterbacks can’t change their deliveries, and even when they can they revert to the old when they get into games. Trey had already proved him wrong on both counts, maybe kinda showing that Kyle knows how to design qb friendly offences (health risks aside) but doesn’t really understand how to assess or develop them. I think he thinks all that kind of thing should be taken care of before it ever crosses his desk. I think part of his appreciation with Purdy is that his 4 years starting in college had taken care of that already. Maybe that’s going to be our type moving forward, the less talented, more experienced junior/senior high floor qbs that is the opposite of the way the league is heading.

Nah, I think some yayhoo once drafted Solomon Thomas over Patrick Mahommes. Oh wait....never mind.

I wonder if there was some compelling to consummate the trade now and not tomorrow. Just to make sure we don't have any QB injuries in tonight's game (knocks on wood).

He wouldn't be the first, or even the first in Shanahan's career (hello RGIII).

Lance had better be absolute garbage.

This is exactly it. Purdy is faaaar from a sure thing. A tiny 8 game sample size and the dude injures his throwing arm and that’s enough to completely off his only competitor at QB? What happens if Purdy stinks it up the first half of the season? We would have had a real QB controversy on hand, but now it’s just putting every egg in the basket of someone who could be another Case Keemun.

Right, but no one would have been calling for Purdy to be benched for Sam fuggin Darnold.

Safe to say Shanahan on the hot seat?

Hard to say. With spotty QB options, the team has been in the last two NFC Championship games. If Shanahan can do that again, he's not going anywhere. At the end of the day, it's about results. Now, if Purdy doesn't pan out or gets hurt and we miss the playoffs for a year or two, Shanahan could be in big trouble.

This fan made some valid points. If you invest that much on a player, you owe it to yourself and the organization to tweak your offense toward his strengths. They did so in year two, but gave up on that plan on year three. Hence, there was a reason why Jalen Hurts looked light years better than he actually is in his 3rd year as opposed to his second year in the league. He was being forced to play in a Doug Pederson completed offense catered more towards Carson Wentz and Nick Foles style of play. When Nick Sirianni changed the offense towards Hurts strength, the team took off. Kyle gave up on him way too soon, I just hope teams don’t end up figuring out Purdy like they did with Jimmy G and Baker Mayfield.

The crazy thing is that the 9ers could have at the very least used Lance as a super charged version of Taysom Hill. He'd have been perfect the perfect QB to throw out in goal line packages where he'd be a threat to plow over guys or do a Tebow style goal line jump pass to the Tight End. Just a stupid trade all around. Purdy is going to get exposed so hard this season.

We would be very dumb to fire Shanahan. Who is going to come in and be better than him?

I feel like Kyle had the intentions to start doing that last year but Lance got hurt and then he saw how we ended the year and we were possibly an injury away from going back to the Super Bowl. What he does works, its hard to deny it so I understand not wanting to change from what he has known pretty much all of his coaching career.

What he does is limited. He can elevate these game manager QB's into looking good, but in the end it always comes back to their limited talent that does his teams in.

Not if he's developed properly. He has all of the physical tools. All he needs is reps.
