When is Shaq going to buy the team?

Post#1 » by MasterGMer » Mon Aug 28, 2023 2:57 pm

There has been rumblings that Shaq is going to purchase the Orlando Magic franchise.

Has anybody heard anything recently? I think Shaq can be a great owner and at least he supports this team plus knowledge about the game and the league.

So maybe we can start a discussion about ownership of Orlando Magic. Is Devos a good owner? Or we could have a much better one?

He's not going to buy the team.

NBA franchises cost a lot more money than Shaq has available. His net worth is around $400M. We'll even aggressively round up and say he has a net worth of $500M or even $600M.

The Magic, if they were put up for sale, would cost *at least* 2 billon dollars.

Shaq's only hope of owning an NBA team would be to pair up with an actual billionaire and put up like 25% (similar to what Alex Rodriguez did with the Wolves) of the money and be the face of the ownership group.

And even then 25% of the bid would be everything he has, lol (probably more). More than likely he'd just be a minority owner no matter what and be a face, like you said. I imagine Shaq would wind up owning less than 5%. Even 10% would be quite expensive for him.

The Devos family are pretty good owners. They've shown they're more than willing to pay for the players, coaches, etc. they're active in the community and giving back, etc. Their downside has been when they try and get involved in managing the club their hiring of executives hasn't been fantastic, but that's a very hard thing to gauge in sports, particularly in mid-sized markets like Orlando.

I wouldn't hate a change in ownership, but it's not something I think fans should be clamoring for.

Does the Wolf family own a stake in an NBA team?

Can the active players purchase part of the team stock with the new CBA in effect? That will be wild but is it possible?

Probably not. The rumors have been there for years, and i think some people assumed once Rich died in 2018 the family would want out, but that doesn't seem to have been the case. though if they did want to sell the team, selling it when we've struggled for so long wouldn't make much sense. Wait for the team to find it's way into contention again and inflate the value.

The fact that the devos family keeps investing on building facilities etc will make it hard for interested parties to buy the team.

The devos fam will likely ask for at least close to what they have invested. And thats gonna be sky high, and we’re not even a winning team. So the potential buyer have to consider that their ROI wont be soon

Owning a sports team, especially something as high profile as a NBA team is a very big ego boost for all those billionaires. How much more if it's not losing you any money.

Think they will keep the Magic for the foreseeable future.

I seriously doubt the Devos family sells the team any time soon, but I think bringing Shaq in as a part owner and face of the franchise is a great idea. The team is on the upswing, and Shaq hurts the community outreach goals the Devos do exactly NONE. Having. Him involved is nothing but good.

I thought the rumor for years has been Shaq and Doc Rivers buying if/when we became for sale. Grant Hill was rumored too but I think he has a small stake in Atlanta now.

I would be all for it. Orlando used to be the cool place to play and now it’s the type of place where guys like Kyle Kuzma make a mockery out of. I understand winning cures everything so if we win guys will want to be here, just feels like it’d be something positive & fresh for this franchise.

Especially given the recent over dramatic comments about the republican donation ownership made.

No thanks. I have no ill will towards Shaq for leaving, but former players make awful owners and most make awful basketball execs as well. He’d meddle way way too much. The DeVos family has been a great ownership group and they need to stay in charge. They’ve always been open to spending money and investing in the team and the community. They are pretty hands off when it comes to the basketball side of things as well, aside from the Martins fiasco a few years back. They’d also be dumb to sell. NBA franchise values will only continue to rise and they’re not hurting for money. No chance they sell the team.

The Devos family are good owners and there’s no reason for a change. Also they’d have to actually be actively selling the team, oh and Shaq can’t afford to buy an NBA franchise on his own.

I could see him as a small-share figurehead owner…would be good for the national visibility, etc

Also, a very large walking reminder not to cheap out on superstars (I know I know- he wanted LAL anyway, but should’ve made it harder)

Shaq is a low-IQ deserter .. should never be in charge of a fan’s NBA team.
He built a career out of being selfish and forcing a ball to go through a hole at point blank range.
He would move the team to Las Vegas first opportunity purely for vanity and $$$

The DeVos family are not good owners. If they were, agents and players wouldn’t have us FA blacklisted.

Shaq can’t afford us himself, he needs a partnership.

Unless the fan base as a whole groups together to push them out, or unless the commissioner takes the team away from them, the DeVos family will never sell the team. The grandkids like it and are more and more being involved. More importantly, the Magic are a tax writeoff haven for any billionaire family.

Economically, and now politically, it doesn’t make sense for them to sell.

Hey Adam, I'm not disputing this at all, since the political views of the family certainly don't go well with the league's overall direction towards social movements ( and this is clear even for a left-wing euro guy like me), but you got my attention there.

Is this something well-known around the league? And what are the motivations? Political or team-business oriented?

I don't see ORL becoming a winner in this league if the ownership is not welcomed by the players. And while, as I hinted above, I am suspicious this is the case, I never saw anyone writing it as clearly as you did here. And I know you don't write stuff wihtout knowing what you're talking about. (since that good old magic madness forums :) )

I'm with you. They bring unnecessary and unhelpful baggage.
