Enough of focusing on feel good stories and start concentrating on getting players that can fill a real role and get you closer to winning a championship.
I wouldn't hate it if we signed Lamar. I was a big advocate for signing him before the Svi signing. And you do make some valid points for signing him.
But he's essentially a wing. And with Svi onboard, I don't really think we need another wing. I think another big is a bigger need.
And signing Blake isn't just some feel good story. You make it seem like he's a Make a Wish kid. The guy can still play - he's arguably the best FA big left on the market. He gave us good, valuable minutes last season. He gave us hustle, energy, he can still shoot. He sets screens, he had good advanced stats, impacted winning in a positive way when he was on the floor.
We already know that Blake can help this team both on the court and off - we saw it last season. Lamar is a good player but we don't know how he would fit here on the court or off the court. Blake gives us more size and more shooting and gives us more of a veteran presence.
Like I mentioned, continuity matters. Teams who win titles don't typically change over half their roster from the previous season. They keep most of the same guys together. We've already turned over our roster quite a bit since last season. Smart and Grant are gone - so is Muscala, Gallo and Champagnie. We added KP, Walsh, Brissett, Banton and Svi. That's quite a bit of turnover. 5 guys gone and 5 new guys added. Let's not have more turnover than that.
And you might not think so, but stuff like off court chemistry matters. The vibes in the locker room matter. Having guys who get along well together, who have fun together, who have a bond with each other matters. Guys on the team need to feel motivated, they need to feel pumped up and ready to go to war, they need to WANT to really give it their all consistently. If 2 really close friends (Smart, Grant) are gone and then we don't bring back another one of their close friends (Griffin) will our guys have the same level of motivation to go to war together and give it their all every night? Tatum is very close to Griffin and so is Pritchard. All the guys really like Griffin - he fit in here like a glove - on the court and off.
Again, you might not think so, but the interpersonal stuff, the psychological stuff matters, imo. These guys aren't robots and this isn't a video game - they're human beings. Especially when we're talking about a team that just got eliminated in the ECF and after the series, Heat player Gabe Vincent said in an interview how the Heat players could sense that something was off internally with the Celtics. Now more than ever, we need to see that this stuff matters.
