What was the 1st game you remembered watching in full?

Post#1 » by JustBuzzin » Sun Sep 3, 2023 2:40 am

I remember watching MJ and the Bulls in the Finals in 97. I remember watching that series thinking to myself Michael Jordan is a superhero. He just seemed like the best player on the floor. It's crazy that was at the end of his prime. I can only imagine how great he was in his prime. It's good to say I watched him get his last championship ring.

Crazy but this was my first memories of watching basketball and falling in love with the game. I still remember that moment to this day. I was at my grandma house watching it live on tv.

Larry Bird's first game as a Celtic. Up to that point I had always been a Red Sox / Bruins fan, but after hearing all the hype about this college sensation Bird, my brother and I thought we'd give basketball a chance - the NBA sucked me in, and hasn't let me out yet.

They had antennas back then. Did you ever get a clear picture of the games back then?

Even in 97 antennas would sometimes be blurry. NBC would always get the clear picture back then.

Not the first game I watched, but the first I remember fairly well was Jordan's 63 in the playoffs vs the Celtics. I was 14 and had just moved from Chicago to Boston. I was obviously a big Bulls fan during the dynasty but the C's ultimately won me over a while after MJ left.

Astrodome game was the first college game I watched. My mom told me there was this Alcindor kid who was really good.
This movie is like the Rocky Horror Picture Show where everyone knows all the lines.

I remember glimpses of a Lakers game with Magic, but never really sat down and watched. This was the first game I remember everyone gathering around to watch the whole thing:

NBA - Bulls@Celtics, game 1, 1981 ECSF 4/5/81

NCAA - UCLA@DePaul, 1980 tourney 3/9/80
"Coach, why don't you just relax? We're not good enough to beat the Lakers. We've had a great year, why don't you just relax and cool down?"

As far as I remember it was pretty clear. I believe the channel that carried the game was actually a higher UHF channel (as opposed to the more popular lower VHF channels) - WSBK TV channel 38. Also, most TV's were a whole lot smaller back then. I'm pretty sure we had a 13" tv to watch the game on.

BTW, this game was also the game where Chris Ford (for Boston) hit the first three point shot ever in an NBA game.

It was in the early 90s, Orlando vs Chicago. I can't remember if it was Shaq's rookie or sophomore season but I don't think Penny was there yet so it got to be 92/93. I was at a friend of mine, he just got cable TV so we watched it there. Since that was like 30 years ago I can't remember who won the game or any notable details but I remember the game was all about Shaq vs MJ.

Early 2000s pacers vs nets with Jkidd, Kenyon Martin, Richard Jefferson, Jermaine Oneal etc.
So many people who attain the heights of power in this culture—celebrities, for instance—have to make a show of false humility and modesty, as if they got as far as they did by accident and not by ego or ambition.

I was too young to answer which one exactly, but the first series I was aware of was the 90 Blazers-Pistons Finals. Suddenly large watch parties made me realize “oh, this is a big deal.” I was about 6.
