JT on Purdy vs. the Chargers. Posting this primarily for the moment right around 13 minutes in when the LDE comes darn close to hitting Purdy's right elbow while he's throwing. JT rants about seven-stop drops from under center, and it's hard to disagree with this result. Come on, Kyle. Got to protect the kid better than this....

Thing I remember about JTO that one season he was with the 49ers, he made some throws but he tried to do too much and would turn it over.
He should do a video breakdown of his film.

Absolutely not defending JT as a QB. But being a bad QB doesn't mean he's not good at breaking down QB play. Kyle is a great football mind despite being, at best, a mediocre football player (14 whole career receptions).

Bill Walsh once said backup quarterbacks make the best coaches

Re: 2023 Offseason
To follow up on Rapaport/Bosa, Rapaport appeared on Pat Mcafee and reiterated they’re not close, timelines are expanding and right now neither party appears to be moving an inch. He says he remains somewhat optimistic a deal will eventually get done, but says we’d better be prepared for a different timeline expectation, ie how many games into the season rather than imminent, which he says is just not happening at the moment.
Anyone else increasingly getting the feeling it’s going to be one of those seasons?

I didn't hear the actual interview, only read about it which did not mention Bosa's camp or the 49ers not moving an inch. The article did not sound as dire. Bosa is going to be paid a ton so hopefully this gets done soon

Hmm if they were ever going to pay a non QB over $25 million a year, now is the time to do it, with Purdy only in his second year and Lance’s high first round salary off the books.

Not really. They have very little cap flexibility. They're projected to be over $11 million over the cap next year, and that's before the Bosa deal. They will almost certainly either trade or extend Aiyuk, which would give them a bit of cap relief for next year, but it's grim going forward (see my post above). It's entirely possible Bosa is being completely unreasonable, but it's also possible they just don't have the cap space to meet his demands. Which would make the Hargrave signing look awful. The only reason that signing looked good is if he's playing next to Bosa. If we can't extend Bosa because of what we spent on Hargrave...that would be disastrous.
You can't blow up the entire roster to keep Bosa. But without Bosa, this team isn't a front-runner for the SB.

I can't believe we're still eating almost $9 million on Dee Ford. I can live with the trade because of the upside, though it grates. The contract restructure was a terrible decision. Though we'd better get used to eating big dead cap hits. Armstead and possibly Juszczyk likely to be next.

Looking at their contracts Juszczyk dead cap would be 2.7 million after this year and Armstead would be 6.7 million after 2024. So neither would be devasting if we cut them in the near future.
I guess on the bright side Ward's and Ford's money is off the books next year so that's like 15 million freed up to....well likely pay almost half of Nick Bosa's salary.

Re: 2023 Offseason
Getting crunch time to get Bosa paid if he's going to play Week 1.
Most rumblings I've read is they are close but just haggling over the finer details and I'm sure both sides are looking to gain/save every penny they can on a contract.
It's one of those deals that will get done it's just a matter of when and if potentially costs us a win or two before it's done.

Re: 2023 Offseason
Feels like we need Bosa to win week one. Pittsburgh scares me a bit. That D could have success against our offense. I would expect Watt to line up against McKivitz, and that's a tough first test for the new RT. Especially as he hasn't had the benefit of going against an elite (or even very good) pass rusher during the offseason. I would hope the offense can still function, but we struggled against Dallas in the playoffs. Without Bosa, the D could look fairly shaky, and may not be able to exploit the Steelers' biggest offensive weakness.

Re: 2023 Offseason
I have very mixed feelings about this. If it was this far off their radar, it’s going to be a problem. I know, first world problems, but…it’s not been an ideal offseason.

Re: 2023 Offseason
Yeah, the Bosa situation is worrisome.
For weeks, months really all we heard is it'll get done, just a matter of time. Well time is basically up, and he still isn't in the building. Not the best of situations to have your best defensive players completely absent from the team, let alone with a new outside hire DC in place now.

Re: 2023 Offseason
So what are we looking at with potential IR designated to returns already?
Ray Ray, Gray, Latu. Am I missing anybody? I know Luter is on PUP, but that's a different situation.
Honestly of those 3, only Ray Ray should be a lock to get a designated to return designation. Gray did absolutely nothing as a rookie, and didn't seem to make much noise in camp before getting hurt. Now if there is a rash of injuries at WR, than I could see Gray being activated. Latu on the other hand, dude was nothing short of ghastly in camp. There was even some chatter we might get outright cut. I don't see much of any reason currently to burn a designation on him, just redshirt him this year and see if he comes back next year improved at all.
I just don't want to see them use their limited designations on bit players with very insignificant roles. Like they did with Curtis Robinson last year, I have no idea what they were thinking with that one. By the end of last season they had to carry several players with significant injuries on the active roster, because they were out of designated to return options.

Latu isn't eligible to return. He went to IR before making the 53. He's done for the year.

Re: 2023 Offseason
So if Bosa holds out, would you trade him for a record deal? Maybe a pro bowl OL + veteran DE and picks?
