Julius Erving scored 25 points in the first quarter and I was glued to the TV hoping he would break Wilts 100 points in a game record.

The game went into 4 OT's.

At the time it was the highest scoring game with a final score of 176-166 with the Conquistadors winning.

Wow! Didn't Wilt coach that team (at least, at one time)? Saw the Doc in the Nassau Colliseum.. just once but I'm glad that I did. My biggest regret as a life-long Nets fan is never seeing Rick Barry play live.

Also that year, saw the New York Knicks play the L.A. Lakers in the "old" (older?) Madison Square Garden. One of West and Baylor was out that game... but I can't recall which.

My god. You saw Hawk’s first ABA game?

Well, Connie scored 34. I've remembered that number without looking it up for over 50 years. There was a big man for the Americans that iirc had over 40. I thought he would be good but that was his 15 minutes of fame. Name was Dan Anderson. I had never heard of him back then. Actually, I had never heard of Hawkins at the time.** You'll probably cringe at that and I do recall that several Brooklynites who had come out to see their Hawk play... did the same. Not scientific but I'd say a good 30, 40, 50 % of the crowd were from Brooklyn. (hmm funny how things played out!).... at least in our section. The crowd was definitely following his every move ... not that it was a big one... maybe 3 or 4 thou?

**Actually, the only guys that I think that ever heard of playing that night actually were Art Heyman (former Knick) and Bobby Lloyd (of Rutgers). I think that the Bergen Record had played those two up. I was in my mid-teens at the time.

I had to look that one up, Wilt did coach the Conquistadors in 1973. The game Dr J dropped 63 points was in February of 1975. Good times!!!

Magic had 42/15 on the road. Kareem didn't play because of a sprained ankle.

Lakers won the game and the championship on the road against Dr. J, Daryl Dawkins, and Caldwel Jones.

Incredible game.

I can't really remember my first game. I was a hockey/baseball fan growing up and only really started casually watching the NBA in the 80's. I watched a lot of Bulls basketball in the late 80's/90's because who didn't at the time plus they were usually on TV up here in Canada which was a basketball wasteland at the time. We watched whatever was on NBC.

I became a real NBA fan when the Raptors entered the league. It quickly became my number 1 sport.
